ScoJo's Running Down a Dream Journal (comments welcome)

Hey Scott,

Welcome Back! :cool1: I'm glad to hear that you had a good time at WDW. :goodvibes I can't believe that you went out for a run after your vacation and drive home! That is awesome, Scott! Way to go! :cheer2: I know that you will be able to get right back into training and do a great job with it! :cheer2:

I'm looking forward to reading your trip report.... Last year's report was one of my favorites! :thumbsup2

Have a great week! :sunny:

Hello!

Two days..two posts...I'm back in the swing of things around here :)

I did my 45 minute run last night. I mapped out a new course thru the 'hood to mix things up a little and it made for a nice run. My legs (quads) were sore before I started but did not bother me while I was out there. I felt like I was going slow, and I stuck to the 4/1 run/walk intervals...and ended up completing 5 miles in 45:24. My splits were 8:33/9:51/8:50/9:24/8:46....can you tell where the hills were? LOL ;) After the run I did some stretching along with 100 crunches and 20 pushups.

I also got back on track with the eating yesterday. I had a healthy lunch and dinner, and healthy snacks throughout the day along with a lot of water. So the day, from a nutrition and running standpoint was a success. I even made an appointment to get a physical...my arm had to be twisted a little for that, but it's done and I'm really looking forward to the bloodwork :worried: :faint:

The good news is that my legs feel good today and I'm gonna hit the LifeCycle tonight for a solid 30 minutes. Hopefully, I'll be in prime condition to beat someone's super fast Wednesday run time. ;)

Thanks to everyone for the support and kind words :)

Off to go continue with the trip report and visit a few journals.

Have a great day!

UPDATE!! The first day of the trip report has been posted! You can link from my signature, or click here:

Hi Scott!!!! :)

Woah...NICE 45 minute run!!! :thumbsup2 OK...so you run 9 mpms on those hills!!! That's awesome. I'm really proud of you, I just can't believe how strong of a runner you've become. You are just going to continue to get faster because of the elevation you deal with all week. I may have to admit ( :rolleyes1 ahem...hate doing this) that you will easily beat my 4 mile time within a month. That's my prediction anyway. See...I can be nice to you Scott :). Even though you were super mean to me on Kim's journal ;). Not that you hurt my feelings :guilty: (sniff sniff)....when all I was doing was playing around :sad1: (sniff sniff).... but i guess that's what happens when you are a sore loser :( (sniff sniff)....you just get mean because of the jealousy :sad2: (sniff sniff). :rotfl: OK....just messin' with you!!! Have A GREAT RUN TONIGHT!!!! Good Luck! You'll need it :teeth:

And I'm REALLY proud of you for making that appointment to get a physical. I hate going to the doctor too....but it's really smart :). This training is grueling. It's important to check things out before we get too deep into the long runs. And I know you'll be just fine! :goodvibes

Hello again!!

Three days in a row now!! going for a new record!! (always going for some sort of record..lol)

Thanks to all for stopping by and Amy...I have to say it's nice to be back on your good side ;)...maybe tonight I'll make an excuse that my allergies are affecting my breathing and therefore I won't be able to break your Wednesday record. :p

In all actuality, I'm glad to have someone to compete with and talk a little smack every now and then. It sure does make this grueling training go by a little easier...so thanks buddy!

With that said...I carb loaded last night with some delicious pasta (and had the leftovers for lunch), and got a good nights sleep in preparation for today's all important fast run. :thumbsup2

I did do 30 minutes on the LifeCycle last night...covering 11.21 miles on the Hills Plus setting. Remember back in the day when they were called exercise bikes?? Yeah, they are much more important now....LifeCycle....like your life depends on it....plus I guess it sounds cooler to have worked out on the Life Cycle (saying it in a deep voice) as opposed to the stationary or exercise bike (wimpy, wimpy, wimpy.....). Anyway, I don't get the complete workout on it like I do the elliptical (hey...were is the cool name for that machine?? like...HeartMaintainer or Anti-Death Device or the Disney endorsed CircleforLife) but it's nice to change things up a little, especially with the good workout it gave my quads. Which by the way, are no longer hurting :)

I weighed in last night at an all time low of 192.2. I believe this to be a partial fluke as I was way dehydrated in Disney and definitely didn't take in the calories that I do during a regular day. So I think as my eating picks up and I get that water weight back in me, I'll probably pop back into the 195 range. I'm no longer overly concerned with driving the number down, it's more about shaping myself now (read: do some crunches to lose that gut Scott) then reducing weight.

With that said, I really need to do a calorie count for a few days and see how I'm doing. I think I need somewhere between 2500-3000 calories each day with the amount of exercising that I'm doing (thanks Amy for looking that up!) so I'd be interested to see if that's what I'm getting.

That's all for now...I still need to get caught up with Survivor and AR, which I'll probably do this weekend....and I'm really looking forward to Wednesday, October 4th at 8pm ;)

That's all for now....hope everyone has a great day!! (If you hear from me tonight, then you know I beat 34:54...if you don't hear from me, please go congratulate Amy on holding the record for another week)

Bye! :wave2: Off to go work on Day 2 of the report :)

Hello again.....just a quick update.....

I have regained the Wednesday Fast Run title for the time being!! Tonight I ran an exhausting and draining 4 miles in 34:25. I have to say that I won't run that fast again for quite some time...it really took it out of me.

And I love the competition....its just great that we can push each other to new levels. I would have never run this fast if Amy hadn't set the bar so high....so thanks Amy :)

Will post another update tomorrow...

Good night everyone!

Hey Scott -

As always, an AWESOME run! Congrats on all you've accomplished so far!

Did you see the LOST special on last night? It was a great recap. I can't wait for next week!!!

Great run, Scott and a great start to your trip report! :thumbsup2 can't wait to read installment #2! :Pinkbounc

Have a great day! :sunny:

Welcome back, Scott! And congrats on such an awesome run. Oh, and I love your pictures. Looks like you and DD just absolutely LOVE being together. :lovestruc

Keep up the great work, but don't overdo it!

AWESOME RUN SCOTT!!!!!!

I have to hand it to you.....you are going to be nearly impossible to defeat now. You really set the bar high this time! :worship: So yes...that title will be yours for quite some time :). And I'm really, honestly soooo proud of you. It's great to have someone there all the time pushing me to reach my potential. I know I wouldn't be running as fast...nor feeling as confident about the marathon...without knowing that you're on this journey too :). So again...congrats on a stellar run.....and thank you :goodvibes .

So I wonder? If I am sidelined from running for awhile...maybe I'll get to ride "the circleforlife". I do have a ski-machine....aka nordic track....but we need to rename that too? Any suggestions? You are definitely more creative in that area? Loved that commentary though :rotfl: , had me laughing good there ;).

So I was thinking that maybe we need to have an online conference to discuss training and nutrition. The best day would be Wednesday, Oct. 4th at 8 pm...just would need an hour. But it's really important that we do this...need to see your commitment to the race. You're totally free that evening right? Could hop online without any problem? :rotfl2: OK..just kidding....I bet you are anticipating that night more than anything (well..maybe not more than the marathon lol). :teeth:

Have a great day Scott!!!!

Hello!!!

Four days...four updates....nothing gonna stop me now!! LOL

Thanks to everyone for the posts!! Trip Report writing needs to become a full time profession...man it takes a long time to put everything down on paper....installment #2 will hopefully be done within a day...

Kim - Lost? What's that? TV show or something? LOL

Amy - hmmm....;).....I enjoy riding my circleforlife but only get to do it once a week now that i've incorporated the LifeCycle on Tuesdays, but it's always a good cardio session so I bet it would be a good workout for you. What other types of cross-training are you considering if you should be sidelined? AND, I'm all set for the online conference on Wednesday at 8pm, nothing is more important then the marathon so...should I just IM you? (now is when I give all praise to the TiVo gods...."oh thank you mighty god of TiVo..I surrender myself to thee :worship: please make sure Lost gets recorded at 8pm this week") :rotfl:

Anywho, I did the run yesterday despite suffering from my seasonal Ragweed allergy...thank goodness I breathe through my mouth! My splits ended up being 7:44/9:00/8:22/9:19. I was really happy with the run, but don't see myself pushing that hard anytime in the near future. Tonight brings a 45 minute 'hood run that I plan on taking at a much slower pace. The weather is perfect, but my allergies will make breathing a tad more difficult.

Looking forward to The Office and Survivor tonight....and we're only a week away from the official start of hockey season!! GO THRASHERS!!

That's it for today...hope everyone has a good one!

until tomorrow....

Good morning!

I completed my 45 minute run yesterday by knocking out 5 miles in 46:25 (9:17 mpm). I ran what I felt to be a really comfortable pace and enjoyed my time out there. For the first time this week, I felt like I was back on track with my training...things going smoothly.

Last night, however, my body responded with pure exhaustion....legs felt achey and tired, even my arms felt worn out. I think I just needed some extra rest after a tough week back of pushing myself, along with a poor day of eating (didn't get enough calories and carbs).

So today I'll do 30 minutes on the elliptical and try to intake more calories. I can't afford to slack off before tomorrows 9 mile run. It will be the first time ever running that distance and I'm looking forward to the challenge :)

It's officially 100 days till the marathon and I have to say I'm pretty pumped about it! It's still scary and intimidating to think about the 26.2 miles sometimes, but it was just as intimidating last February when I never thought I'd be able to run 8! Limits are things that our minds set for us and we'll never fully realize what our limits are until we push ourselves beyond the norm. This journey has taken me down a totally unexpected and incredible path and I cannot wait to see what the future holds once I cross that finish line. Wow...that was cryptic, wasn't it! LOL

Enough philosophizing...time to get back to work..lol....hope everyone has a great day!

Oh no :( I'm the only one posting in my journal :sad1:
LOL

So today I had the best run of my life. But before that, I did manage a 30 minute cross training session last night on the elliptical. It was a good workout and I was also pleased to see that I maintained my weight at 192.2.

This morning I set out for my 9 mile long run, my longest run to date. I ran on the flat trail in a nearby park by the river. It was a bit chilly when I first started going and I noticed a lot of the other runners with gloves on...something I really took note of since my hands were a bit nippy ;) But I survived and really had a great pace going throughout the run. I was never winded and everything seemed totally effortless. I guess it's what should happen with proper training...I was just glad to have it so lucky today. I also tried a PowerGel at the 45 minute mark, along with some water. It was actually quite tasty! Strawberry banana flavored and the consistency was very pleasant to me. Anyway, I know..you want to know how fast ;) Here are my splits:

Mile 1 - 8:26
Mile 2 - 8:56
Mile 3 - 9:04
Mile 4 - 9:03
Mile 5 - 8:20
Mile 6 - 8:50
Mile 7 - 8:50
Mile 8 - 8:43
Mile 9 - 8:22

Overall time was 78:42 for an average of 8:45 mpm!!

I did NOT push myself and like I said...maintained a really consistent pace thoroughout. I nailed my 4/1 intervals to the second and that's why some of the splits fluctuate...example, mile 1 has only 1 walk break, but mile 2 has 2 walk breaks...by the time you get back to mile 5, it only had 1 walk break too...get it?

I stretched out really well afterwards and even did a little hike thru the woods to maintain some flexibility. Right now, my legs are a little tired in the quad region but nothing too substantial. Today's run really gave me a boost of confidence that I can do this marathon. I recognize that I'm extremely fortunate to not have any injuries...and I really hope those out there who are dealing with setbacks can keep their chins up, get treatment and get back on track.

So, that's it for this morning! Gonna go find something to do LOL...I hope everyone has a great weekend!! Tomorrow is a rest day for me...but I may be around just to keep up my streak of posts :)

Scott - just got caught up on your journal. Your training, both mentally and physically, is phenomonal! You are going to have such a great race in January! I am wildly immpressed with how you immediately jumped back into training after your vacation even.

I'm off to read your trip report now. Here's to another great week for you! :cheer2:

Incredible run Scott. Really...amazing amazing amazing! You have the ability and determination to accomplish a lot with your running. I am so very proud of you.

Well...Mr I strikes again! You're just blowing me away, Scott. I am continually amazed at your progress. Not pushing yourself with 8-something mpm's?? That's something I can't comprehend!!

Keep it up! :moped:

....only 3 more days!!!! (oh, and I think I saw a preview that said it comes on at 9m for us....did you think it was 8pm?) :confused3

Hello!

First thing first....thanks Kim!! How on earth could I have the starting time for Lost confused? It's 9pm, not 8pm. Geesh...I feel so embarrassed...the others will not be happy with my mental lapse. Can't wait though...love the preview! (it was everything i had to not buy the Lost merchandise when I saw it all in MGM)

So nothing to report on yesterday because it was an off day!! I got to eat eat eat and feel guilty guilty guilty for not working out. I keep saying it over and over but I need to get a solid weight/core training program in place and stick to it. Maybe I can work on that again tonight.

This week's plan shapes up like this:

Today - 50 minute run...yep, the first 50 minute one of the training (up from 45)
Tuesday - 40 minute cross training (yep...up from 30)
Wednesday - 40 minute speed run
Thursday - off....OFF...wow! What am I gonna do with myself?
Friday - 40 minute cross training
Saturday - 6 mile long run...only 6? wow..this is a relaxing week
Sunday - off

So things are a little different this week and it'll be nice to get some extra time in on the XT machines as well as on the run today.

I hope everyone out there has a great day!

Hey, anything I can do to help out a fellow LOST fan! :thumbsup2

I gotta say, I am enjoying learning how the marathong training progresses. Thanks so much for being detailed in your training day-to-day.

Keep up the GREAT work! :moped:

:goodvibes Hey Scott! As always your training is going along great. I am so impressed with your drive and continual improvements. I just can't believe that what I've seen develop over the past few months is not just a runner...but someone whom I feel has potential to qualify for the big races in the future. NOW I know that you don't necessarily aspire to that goal....but it's a huge accomplishment to reach your level of consistency in the runs....and meanwhile stay so focused on the XT and healthy eating. :grouphug: It's really amazing to see your improvements week to week. I'm really sooo proud of you...you have no idea!!!

I know that last week was a brutal week of training. I wasn't able to complete half the miles you managed to do. That will definitely take a toll on the body....and you really need to take care of your legs. Remember to keep icing them! Take advil after your runs! AND....keep an eye on that knee issue! Catching any running related injuries early on is the key! I hope you're feeling 100% by the time you read this :). Oh...and I read that tight quads can be a factor with runner's knee. Make sure you are stretching those quads like crazy...maybe even a bit before the run but definitely do some extra quad stretches after the run.

As for all the shows.....of course you know I don't watch Lost :duck: . I know...somehow missed that boat :confused3 . So you guys can discuss it and all I'll hear is "can you believe that (insert a bunch of names and events that I don't understand)". LOL. But I'm happy for you that it's back on! Uber-super-fan that you are! I'll just listen...or read as the case may be....and pretend I understand what everyone is talking about. Now that I think about it...that's pretty much what I do all day anyway :rotfl: . So it should be easy!

Amazing Race is pretty good! I haven't found "my team" yet! I'm still pondering that. But I am enjoying the season and challenges. Unfortunately my DVR didn't record it this past week :furious: because of @#*$@*& football!!!! Ugh! It was pretty crazy last week!

Survivor is ok...again I have no favorites yet. Yul (is that his name) seems like a good competitor BUT I think he may not have that manipulative personality that it will take to win. We'll have to wait and see popcorn:: . All I want to know is how long they were run/walking in the water with the sand bags? I wonder what the elapsed time was? Seemed that many dropped out too early. I was disappointed in the girls :(.

The Office: OK...awesome awesome awesome. "Nothin' like a Scranton Party!" Was a pretty funny episode. Can somebody please tell me if they noticed Creed (spelling) introduce himself to Meredith in the break room? That was weird? Was just a strange exchange that didn't seem to go anywhere...and was that Angela in Dwight's room? Had to be right???? :lmao: Anyway....the whole episode was a little cryptic at times. Maybe I need to watch the webisodes....LOL...being such a fan perhaps they shed some light?

Anyway...sorry to totally hijack your journal Scott! I know you're a TV junkie like me and since I can't sleep tonight...thought I'd post like a crazy person here on your journal!

Have a great day!!!

Hello!

Thanks "y'all" for the posts :) First thing first though...training update....

I completed my 50 minute run yesterday. I mixed it up a bit, with the first 2.5 miles being a normal route for me...and then I made a few turns, ran around the fitness center & aquatic complex, playground & mini-golf and the 26 tennis courts that are in our subdivision (for real! actually, I think it's 32) and made my way back to the house. I hit my 50 minutes before returning home and had no idea how far I ran at the time (can you say..."Santa needs to bring me a Garmin for Xmas" :) ). So I logged on gmaps and it calculated out to 5.38 miles...for a 9:17 mpm average. What's that? I heard something?....OHHHH....It was Amy hitting the floor....yes, it's true...WE RAN THE EXACT SAME DISTANCE without meaning to! Can you say "ideal marathon running buddies?" LOL Soooo funny that it turned out that way!

Anyway, last night I started feeling the affects of the increased distance. My legs ached, especially my right knee and I do believe Amy is right with her diagnosis. Runner's knee combined with not enough sleep = bum knee. The good thing is that I woke up this morning feeling normal again....no aches or pains. But I will certainly keep an eye on my legs, and ice/heat/wrap/stretch/amputate as needed. Guess I'll need to stop staying up so late working on editing my vacation video, eh? ;)

So I'm totally prepared for my cross training tonight and I think I'll hit the elliptical for my 40 minutes. Nothing like the workout that it gives you. I'm anticipating having gained some weight but I'm not real worried about an increase on the scale.

So yeah, can't wait for the first Lost episode...I just know there will be some twists and surprises in store for us. I think I'm gonna check out the show on after it too..called "the nine" and see what it's all about.

The Office....Oh my!!....first two episodes have been incredibly funny!! Can't believe Dwight and Angela LOL too funny! And poor Jim :( I really feel for the guy. But I want to know why Pam hasn't called him to tell him the deal...you'd think they would still talk...*shrug*...keeps it interesting I guess. And yes...definitely check out the webisodes...they are pretty good!!

Amazing Race...hmmm...I don't have a solid favorite yet either but I am liking it more with each episode. The second one was awesome with all of the chaos that was taking place. I guess I'm pulling for Rob and Kim...I always go for the guy/girl teams (except last year...Hippies!!) and they are the least annoying to me. I liked Duke and Lauren, but oh well....buh bye.

Survivor....first of all...why have the mysterious envelope at every challenge if its gonna say the same thing all the time?? Why not let them know in advance?? And I definitely don't have a favorite player yet...no one is really striking my fancy LOL...but I'll admit that it's getting better each week.

Big Brother....I know it's over but the application for next season is online. Think I should go for it?? LOL!! Could be Scott and under my name it would say Marathoner :)

So with the Braves not in the post season for the first time in 15 years (can you Yankee fans say that?)...and the Raiders stinking up every aspect of the game of football....I'm in anticipation that the Thrashers are gonna put together a successful campaign...*crosses fingers*

I hope everyone has a great day and thanks so much for the support, advice and encouragement...I really would not be where I am without you guys. THANK YOU!

OMG....YES!!! :thumbsup2 That would be AWESOME!! Although we'd miss you terribly around here....but you'd ROCK Big Brother!

Survivor....I really like Yul, but like Amy said...I don't know if he can do enough scheming to make it to the end.

Amazing Race...not sure why, but I like the pageant girls. Maybe I'm a feminist at heart and really want a girl-girl team to win finally?!? They seem smart, genuine and athletic. (and I don't think they did anything wrong this week at the travel agency).

The Office...all I can say is THANK GOD I started watching this show! How many deep belly laughs would I have missed out on? SO MANY! Dwight is just insane! And Jim.... :rotfl: I think it's a given that Pam & Jim will end up together, but they gotta string this a long for a while first.

Great job with the training, Scott. And totally freaky that you and Amy ran the same distance! :joker: I'll put in a good word with Santa for that garmin!!
