I won the science fair in the 4th grade and got $50 that my parents let me spend any way I wanted. 
That was a huge amount of money when you're just a kid!
My project was about erosion. You have to start it a few weeks in advance.
Get two big trays and fill them with soil. Put grass seed it one and let it have a few weeks to grow.
For the experiment part, we simply tilted the trays to simulate a hillside and used a watering can to simulate rain. Then we measured the amount of dirt that was rinsed away out of each tray. The result was showing how grass helps prevent erosion.
