I was thinking of going to Sci-fi for the atmoshpere, but recently I have read a couple of posts saying they had to leave because the movies were too scary for their kids. My DD is 6 and a half and my DS is just 5. DD likes me to fast forward over the twister part in The Wizard of Oz because it is scary for her.

Will the movies at Sci-fi be too scary for them or can we explain some of the screaming parts ahead of time?

My 11 yr old DS LOVES Sci-Fi- he has been going since he was 2- while the movies aren't scary, as in slasher scary- it does depend on the child- I wouldn't hesitate to bring kids your age to Sci-Fi. DS #2 will be 5 when we go in August. The movies are the hokie 60's alien movies with the aliens with big heads. We haven't been to DW in over 2 years, but if my memory is correct, there is more than 1 screen going at a time- but I could be wrong. It's not loud, either. BTW- I probably would have had to fast forward that scene in Wizard of Oz for 11 year old even up until he was 8 or 9;)

Can only speak for my own kids, but DD4 didn't bat an eye at the movies. She really wasn't interested in them at all.:confused3 Our car was near the back. Maybe that helped.

I don't recall the movies being scary, but we didn't pay all that much attention to them. SciFi (in my opinion) is a neat place to eat.

I think your reaction will make a lot of difference for them. My DS6 tends to be scared easily. (When he was 4 he got really upset because my mom told him how big he was getting. He was afraid he was becoming a giant. :rotfl: )
Anyway, he loved Sci-Fi!!! We all watched the clips together and laughed at them. Both boys loved it so much we cancelled another dinner reservation so we could go twice last trip. :goodvibes

Ah, I've always wanted to go to the Sci-Fi.
One question though..did the movies there bore you or were they intersting to watch?

For our family, the movies were more like background noise and we didn't really pay that much attention to them anyway. But, when we did watch, my kids (ages dd-2, dd-6, ds-12) was not bothered by them in the least. I think the supposed "scary" clips are so cheesy and fake looking, it's hard to actually be scared of them. I'm sure they were scary for their time, but considering the type of movies we have now, the Sci-Fi clips were actually more funny than frightening.

I'm 24, but a big wuss, and the only thing that bothers me is that in one clip, the giant man who keeps growing throws this huge needle down on a guy. Yeah, it's really fake, but I hate needles :scared: so it freaks me out. I just don't look since we've been there enough that I know when it's coming.

Does your DD not like the dark? It is quite dark in there. That would be something you might want to warn her about. ("It's like you're eating outside at night time")

There are so many things to look at that I think she'll be fine.

It's an experience going there!! My family has asked to go back again - funny thing is the food wasn't very memorable but the experience and atmosphere was great!

Funny, that is the one we laugh at most. That big guy looks like he is wearing a huge diaper! :rotfl: DH always does a fake scream as he throws the needle. The kids get a big laugh out of it.

So, why does the woman's clothes grow with her, but only the guy's tightie whities grow with him???? :confused3 :lmao:

Apparently so! What about that thing that looks like a walking onion? What is that? :lmao:

We are eating at the Sci Fi for the first time in April. The only reason it was on my list (and stays on my list) is because of the clips. Hubby and I are HUGE MST3K fans, and kiddo (7) is becoming an aficianado of all things sci fi and supernatural (within reason). My friend (who is also a Dis-er...Hi Misty!) said that we would LOVE it, so we're going!

The last time we went, my son was 7 and my daughter was almost 2. My son thought everything was hilarious and my daughter didn't even notice the "scary" parts. She only looked up when she saw the cartoons.

And believe me, my children are quite sheltered from tv or movies. They do not watch too much and we only let my son watch children's movies. So, I don't think he understood that it was suppose to be scary. They were in such poor quality that it was just so funny to him.

DD loves sci-fi. The old clips are silly, not so scary! DD is begging to go back again, she also loves the random screams that are thrown into the sound track.

They definitely aim to be amusing, at least towards adults -- I love the clips that show "exciting looks into the future" featuring clips like an automatic baby changing machine.

We have gone every time for the last couple of years and it's on our list again for our trip in May. We LOVE Sci-fi. The cars, the movies, the wait staff.

My cellphone ringer is "the blob" theme song that plays as part of the movie clips. Our kids giggle most of the way through the movies. To me Haunted Mansion is "scarier" than Sci-Fi by far. It's out favorite restuarant at the World, well that and the Castle. :)

Sci-Fi is very dark. My kids have never been scared (even when my youngest went for the first time at 5)there but have never really been scared of many things. I agree with the previous post that said your reaction may set the tone. I don't necessarily think it would be a good idea to say that the place may be dark (my opinion) - they may be anticipating a dark scary place. Maybe setting the tone by saying we are going to an indoor drive in or movie that people say is a lot of fun with silly old movies. That being said you know your kids - maybe they would respond differently when they are a little older.

The movie previews they show are hilarious because of how bad the "monsters" tend to look. There are cartoons and views into the future that are quite amusing as well. I wouldn't worry about anybody getting scared.

DS was a little nervous when he was younger (doesn't like spiders, and there is one clip where a guy has like a melted face), but now, at 13, he loves it and requests Sci-Fi every trip. It's fun to eat there!

The food is fine, nothing Earth-shattering (or should that be Mars-shattering . . . )

No it was not scary. Mu husband and I are in our 50s so we can relate to some of the movies being on when we were kids.very good sandwiches also.
