I have 2 boys 9 and 10 who are in 4th and 5th grade...2 months ago when school started one of the big things on the LONG school supply list was 2 bottles of germx per kid...ok well i also gave my dss9 a small bottle to keep with him because he is a carrier of mrsa and we are very careful of making sure hands are washed or using the germ x so that other kids are protected also and if he is getting up to wash his hands everytime he wipes his nose on his hand he will get in trouble..i do have him put bactrim gel in his nose (doc said good idea) with cold and flu season here but he needs to keeps hands clean.WELL that took all the germ x out of the schools here because of the chance the kids will drink it to get drunk! really...the way they are having to close schools to clean for staph you would think this is not a good move....another thing on the school list was paper towels, ok they cant afford paper towels but now say they are going to do handwashing? they even asked for soap...this is crazy, has this happened anywhere else?

When my kids were in public school they always had to supply their own tissues/kleenex, germX, hand soap, papertowels, and of course the other long list of things and then the supply fee. One year they even had to supply lightbulbs for the teachers desk lamp, dry erase markers for her large board and baby wipes for the computer lab (they wipe their hands before touching the keyboards).

They said they don't keep soap in the bathrooms since it was getting wasted or squirted all over the floor, but still.....each teacher could be given a bottle by the school to squirt on their hands before entering the bathroom instead of parents supplying that.

So what option do you have for your son now? Sanitizing wipes would get expensive and are probably a bit inconvenient. Will they still allow other types of hand sanitizer?

We can't use Germ X in our school either. Not sure exactly why, but they told us we can't let the kids use it.

Our school district has taken it away as well. From both the middle and high school we were sent a letter it is due to kids sniffing it!:headache:

My county banned hand sanitizers last year.

My school has signs everywhere to wash your hands with soap and water due to recent staph infections-but we've been out of soap and papertowels for a week (even the teacher's bathroom). The principal told us today that the superintendent won't sign off on the purchase order for soap!:confused3

Bath and Body Works makes hand cream with an antibacterial agent - that might be allowed?

How about handi-wipes?

These anti-bacterials are full of alcohol. There have been several school systems throughout the US who have banned its use as several elementary age children have gotten alcohol poisoning and OD from the constant use at school.

does the school nurse and health dept know about your son's status? even if germ-x isn't generally allowed, I would think it would be required if a child was a carrier of a potentially lethal bacterial infection. I would be very surprised if your pediatrician and the state health department didn't intervene in this one.

That is absolutly absurd!!!!

I'm in healthcare, and I am almost OBSESSIVE about using the "germ-x" type gels... to the point that if I see it, I have to use it, weither I am at work, my doctors office, or some random place that someone might have it. If anyone were to get sick from using it, it would be me! I've used it no less then 400 times in the last 27 hours (being at work, then on call, then at work again) Before i go into EVERY patients room. We had about 40 patients at the hospital last night, and I go into each patients room at LEAST 3 times throughout my shift, that's 120 times right there, PLUS the patients I actually have on treatments, and that's typically an ADDITIONAL 3-4 times each!

You do NOT get alcohol poisioning from it, unless you DRINK it.

School systems are getting stupid. And whose ever county just outlawed it, well, enjoy a steep increase in (hospital caused) infections. Specifically, MRSA, ORSA, Staph, and Ecoli.

BTW: it's health code that the bathrooms have soap and paper towels in them. I'd talk to the local health department for those suffering from "budgetitis"....... When people don't wash hands after using the bathroom, it leads to ECOLI!

the teacher told me to look for some that does not have alcochol in it...i have not seen these...I have spoken to a few people there about him having mrsa and having it in his blood and they just dont know what to tell me, I am only trying to protect the kids...they asked for the germ x because the soap made a mess...also not to be nitpicky but where is the germ x they had to have for there lists? did they just toss it out after making people buy it?I use it at home they could have sent it back..

Not that this really matters, but thought I'd chime in on the paper towel thing. We request paper towels as a class "wish" item, (not a necessity on the student supply list) because the state issued paper towels do not absorb anything! They are OK in the bathrooms to get most of the water off of hands, but not for cleaning up anything. They just smear paint, water, glue vomit, etc., all around.

We are still allowed to have hand sanitizer, but it must be kept in a locked cabinet and dispensed to each child by the teacher. We just had our first confirmed case of MRSA last week. :scared1: We are all a little freaked out. Until you work with elementary school children, you just have no idea of how much the touch each other, share clothing and hair accessories, sneeze all over keyboards, wipe "stuff" on walls, lick markers, put headphone cords in their mouths...I could go on and on! It really is frightening at how easily it could be spread. I work in the computer lab now and have to go from computer to computer helping the kids. Everytime I touch a mouse or key, I wonder what might have been growing on it. I go through almost a bottle of sanitizer per week just for myself.

I guess these are the times we live in now.:sad1:
