School supplies Thread

I went back to Walmart yesterday because they overcharged me on my 40 pack neon erasers. They were marked 22 cents and they charged me 97 cents and they paid me $5 for overcharging me. I never knew Michigan had a MI bounty law that if they over charge you they have to pay you $5. I will be looking at ALL my reciepts more carefully now.

WOW!!! That is great to know! Good catch too!

thanks, Dana

I just bought 2 packs of the neon erasers and they were .97c. That is what they were marked and what they rang up as. Are you guys saying that some Wal-Marts are only charging .22c for them?? Maybe I should try a different store for my afternoon trip...LOL

I just had to post that this is a small world here on the DIS...first to see someone else posting from Muskegon, and then you Dana...if you are who I think you are, anyways.

My DD Hallie used to do the pageant thing and I think I remember you from Cover Miss. :goodvibes

And, of course I am loving all the info on the sales for school supplies. I'm a teacher and my DD starts Kindergarten this year and with that combination, there is a lot of stuff we need to pick up before school starts.

Funny who you see here! LOL

Thanks, Dana

Tinkercat, my son is also starting kindergarten this year at Reeths Puffer and I'm not sure what he needs as far as school supplies. Can you help me? I have not gotten a hold of the school yet to see if they have a list or not.

No way! Which Elementary will he go to? My DD will go to RP Elementary. I haven't heard anything about a list yet either, but I am planning to stop in this week to drop of a copy of some paperwork and I'm going to ask then.

ETA - I'm betting they will need at least some of the basics (crayons, glue or glue sticks, safety scissors, etc.) and most teachers like getting things like tissues sent in too.

Okay this is kinda freaking me out! LOL Are your kids gonna be in the same class??? WOW! Also do you notice your travel dates?

I'm in NY, but here's my daughter's kindergarten supply list. MOST definitely get stuff while it's on sale, or you'll end up spending a fortune when school starts. Also, stock up-- either they'll run out during the year and request more, or you'll use the stuff for projects:

Kindergarten

1 Pair of Childproof Fiskars Scissors
(Fiskars works best)
1 Smock (large, old button-down shirt is fine
with sleeves trimmed)
1 (or more) Laundry Detergent Top(s) to hold
scissors & crayons
1 Box of Crayola Crayons (16 or 24 count only)
1 Solid Colored Loose-Leaf Book
1 Liquid Hand Soap w/Pump
2 or more Container(s) of Baby Wipes
2 Bottles of Elmer’s White Glue
2 Rolls of Paper Towels
1 Box of Colored Pencils
1 Box of Markers
1 Box of Tissues
4-6 Pencils
8-10 Glue Sticks
1 Composition Notebook

Do not label the glue, glue sticks, and markers because these items
will be shared in order to encourage a classroom community. All other
supplies should be labeled with your child’s full name in permanent marker.

****In September, please send the above items in one
large bag labeled with your child’s name.****

I didn't even notice the travel dates!! How funny is that! I've never encountered someone from Muskegon on the DIS before. Its kind of cool!

Items that were always asked: glue sticks, tissues (esp. during winter months), lysol/clorox/disenfecting wipes of some sort, ziplock baggies - asst. sizes.

Some other things teachers have to pick up and won't generally ask for but would appreciate: dry erase board markers (most classes don't use chalk anymore), stickers, little toys (think party favors & happy meal toys) for rewards, velcro.

Kindergarten items that may be "different" from standard use items - fat crayons usually in 8 pack vs. the smaller regular size crayons, fat "learning" pencil vs. "normal" size pencil.

With the great deals on markers, colored pencils, paper, glue, stickers, scissors, etc. I also stock up and make artist buckets/packages for the kids for Christmas/birthdays. Throw all supplies into a box or tote of some sort and you have a relatively inexpensive gift for a child or make up a rainy day box to pull out when it's crummy out and the kids are driving you nuts.

:sad1: The .01 cent sale at Staples ended yesterday...
I went there today asking where to find the items and the young guy rather condescendingly told me the sale ended yesterday. I was disappointed and he said that there would be another one next week with .05 cent items.
I know it wasn't a lot of items, I just wanted a real bargain! KWIM??

(OT, Target is next door so I popped in and found .19 cent 4th of July paper plates on clearance, so it made up for it!)

Our Target does not have school supplies out yet and Walmart is just putting them out now. I did get the .05 cent spiral notebooks and filler paper for .50 and stocked up on those items. The did not have the glue sticks out yet.

Our kids go to private school and they offer a school supply ready made, (a fundraiser). It is convenient, but I can get all the supplies for a fraction of the cost. We do a lot to support the school in other ways!

I am also looking for good deals on the divider tabs for binders...we need quite a few!

Tinkercat-My son will be at Central in K2 am with Mrs. Brushman. I requested pm since I work second shift so I am going to try and get him changed. When we were at kindergarten round up one of the teachers told me if he didn't get what we requested it shouldn't be a problem getting him changed. How about you?

If your child's school/teacher needs dry erase markers, go to the seasonal aisle at Wal-Mart. In the regular office supply area of Wal-Mart they only sell one brand that go for over $7/ pack. However, in the seasonal aisle, they had another brand with more markers that went for a little under $4/pack. Great deal!

I'm a high school teacher and we use the more expensive brand. They may work better than the cheap brand, but if a teacher has 15-20 kids buying them markers for the year, they will have plenty of markers.

My Walmart stunk! The only deal I found was 22 cent crayons. I ended up going to 3 stores for my Kindergartener's school supplies!!!! It took me forever to find a "plastic" folder and Tropical washable markers which don't exist, I bought the bright colors instead. I'm glad I'm finished though.

We know she'll be in K2 at RP Elem. and that she'll be in an AM class, but we don't know what teacher she'll have yet. I know at the round up they said the teachers might be different next year and they are advertising a Kindergarten position so thats probably why we don't know anything so far. We moved into the district 5 months ago from Oakridge and my DD is sad to leave her friends there after finishing her year in preschool there, but I'm hoping we'll really like RP.

Check Walmart.com for back packs! I looked there before I went to the store and I got both of my girls Hannah Montana messenger bags for $7 each! The total was $17 and change to have them shipped to my house :cool1: . The bags I got are $12.84 each at our store! I got them next day and it said I'd get them in 3-5 days, so that was a plus!

Our school has the pre-packaged supplies, but they are $41 for kindergarten and the list is VERY basic-

2 boxes of 24 crayons, 4 folders w/horizontal pockets, pack of washable markers, 2 box kleenex, 4 rolls papertowels, a 1 inch binder, 6 glue sticks and 2 bottles of glue

I believe I spent $15.11 :)

Then of course, I picked up extra crayons, and glue at 22 cents.

What I'm looking for are the folders that Staples did for 1 cent. I don't have a Staples. It is for my classroom. I do have office max and office depot, then target and walmart. Right now walmart is 15 cents. I need 60, so that is $9.00. I'd love to pay 60 cents :) :)

Great thread thanks.

For those of you bargain shoppers from last year-- walmart had many of the same items that are currently .22 for .10 Do you think they will go down or do you think that .22 is just the price for this year. I also remember that Target varies what is on sale each week but there is usually a week that the washable markers go on sale cheap.

Our school (private) is very specific about item size and brand and that is what you must get. I am very budget minded and last year the request was for 8 count crayola crayons (6packs) but the 24 packs were .10 at walmart. I bought the 24 packs and took out the 8 colors that were in the the 8pack and put them in a snack ziploc bag. The 8 count were like 1.50 each. I saved all the other colors in a big bag at home for coloring and crafts. I asked the first of school if this was acceptable and the teacher told me that it was one of the best ideas she had seen. The colors all go into a basket for each color-red,blue etc..... and she throws away or recylces the boxes.

our school supplies everything and never sends home a list, but I stock up anyway! The teachers do request hand sanitizer and desk cleaner (like 409), but it isn't required.

Most of the schools around here do put out lists though. And I expect when the kids get to middle school, we will be issued "the list". LOL...
