School Start Dates

Staten Island Public Schools and Parochial Schools start on September 8th. We normally get out June 27th! Why do schools all just in Labor Day Week? Plus the all year round school thing is not working for me even just reading it!

Pittsburgh Public Schools go back Sept 1. We use to go back after labor day.

Y'know, unless the schools here in MA want to put A/C in the classrooms, they really can't consider bringing the kids back any earlier than they do...as it is now, they're coming back Aug. 29/30 in our town, and that's much too hot, IMHO.

Our school district goes year round. I think they started that in the early 80s. (When I was in elementary!!) because the area was growing faster than the schools could keep up with. So at that time each elem school had 4 cycles (ABCD) that rotated throughout the year. Basically 3 cycles start in July 2 will go for 9 weeks, one goes for @ 3 then 4 th cycle starts around the middle of August. Basicaly they go for a quarter (9 weeks) and then are off for 3 weeks- of course they still get time for holidays. Now that they have more school buildings and the population has evened out a bit the whole district in one 1 cycle (middle and high school go the "normal"" school calendar) they started July 20 and the year will end @ June 1 depending on snow days. We like it, the teachers and kids get small breaks so they are not as burnt out and the beginning of they year picks up where the previous year left off with very little time redoing wht was already taught, and it gives us more opportunity to take vacations in October, February basically off season!!

Here in CA we start on Aug 22. Although that is not even consistent all over this state. Heck in the neighboring town from where I live they start on the 18th.

It used to always be after labor day and it just keeps getting earlier and earlier. they also extended our thanksgiving and president's day holidays to a full week so now they start early and don't get out of school till 2nd week of June. Makes for a LONG year. Might as well be year round as far as I am concerned.

Actually wish it was. Would be easier.

My DS16 will start school the 30th with a half day that Friday for Labor Day weekend. DH, a HS teacher, has teacher days the 25th and 26th. As someone mentioned earlier, schools in New England don't have ac, so the warmer days -- either at the end of the school year the third week in June, or the early fall -- can be lost to learning. It's just too hot to sit in classrooms and think.

My oldest goes back to school August 22. I am so not ready for summer break to be over.

I have 2 in small private Christian school here in VA and they start back on Aug. 24th. My oldest DD is in public school and she starts on the 24th of Aug. also. This is better than last year. Oldest DD started a week before the other two. I still had to get everyone up early to take DD and she wasnt happy because smaller siblings got to stay home while she worked at school. I hate for them to go back, though. I LOVE having my children at home with me!!

Well for the most part, k-12 schools will be august 8 in broward and dade counties, FL.
Although college won't start till the 22nd. So there will be a big jump in attendance for college age kids. Although me and kari aren't planning to go until september, but that's cause we're broke until then.
