Remember the days when school was from 8:30 - 3:00? Why did they ever change the hours? DS is in school from 8:00 - 2:30. That seems too early to get out even though they're in school the same amount of time. Perhaps because some parents need to be at work at 8:30. (My sister says she never takes a job unless the hours are 9-5 with an hour for lunch. I don't think there is such a thing in FL. ) I was lucky to have a flexible boss. I liked getting out at 4 to pick up DS, so I worked 7:30-4. But I had to have him at school at 7 a.m. to do it! Do you ever feel like you just work your life away?

My kids get out at 2, and I have them there by 7:45. I think the tardy bell is at 7:55. And I'm not a morning person. :(

My DD (17) is out the door at 6:30AM! Her classes start at 7:20AM and she's finished at 1:50PM.

In HS, it's better for them to start earlier and get out earlier, because most of them have after school jobs.

When she was in elementary school, it was 8:40AM start and they got out at 2:20PM.

I think it's so scattered now with the hours because there are more people living far from the school, which means more buses, and they can't have all the buses for all the schools out there at the same time!

Plus, here in my area of FL, some of the bus drivers drive both for the elementary/middle schools as well as for the high schools, so they have to be different hours.

That would make sense. DS is in a private school without buses. However, they could be following public school hours. I'm not even sure what their hours are in the area.

Our primary schools (age 5 to 11 or 12 years) start at 9am and finish at 3pm, our high schools(age 11 or 12 to 16, 17 years) start at 9am and finish at 3.30pm.

My son goes to school from 8:00-3:00 pm Mon., Tues., Wed. and Fri. and on Thurs. he goes from 8:00-1:30 pm. I don't work now, so it doesn't effect me. However, his school in CT last year was from 9:00-3:30, so I would drop him off at 8:45 and then pick him up at 3:30. Before he started school there I worked 9-5, when he started school I switched my hours to 9-3:00 so I could take DS and pick him up, I also gave up my lunch hour, I was fortunate I had an understanding boss. That year was very stressful as I was always running, it is so much easier now.

The school I work at starts at 8:50 and ends at 3:30.

MY KIDS get to do school whenever they want! DD14 is not a morning person and would rather work in the later afternoon to early evening. DS5 is not very structured at this time and just picks up stuff from life.

Our schools fall in the category of the same buses drive for all levels of schools, so the hours are staggered.

In general, the 3 county high schools start at 7:20 and get out about 2:15 or so. The middle schools start at 8:00 and get out at 3:00ish. The elementary schools start from 8:45 to 9:00 and get out from 3:35 to 3:50.

Our bus driver picks up high school kids first, drops them off at 7:20, then does an early elementary school run (the before programs like math club, music groups, etc. start at 8:00), dropping at the school at 8:00 then does the regular elementary run dropping at 8:55. She then does a pre-k mid day run (our kindergarten is now full day), then picks up the high schoolers, regular elementary run, then a late after school elementary run from 5:30 to 6:15.

And all this for barely minimum wage!!! Our driver happens to have a daughter in our girl scout troop, so I know how hard she works. She also does a "municipal" bus run on Saturdays and the occasional Sunday.

They both have to be at school at 8:00. DS is in 6th grade and gets out at 3:30 and DD is in high school and gets out at 3:45!
We also start in August and go through the end of May.

Wow! Thursdays have to be tough for working parents. Sometimes it seems they don't figure that in.

Spirit Feather...you've got the best schedule...flexible! One of my friends has been homeschooling her 3 kids for years and loves it. She wouldn't have it any other way, and neither would her kids.

Wow, Huneypots! What long days for your kids! DS also goes August through May.

tkd...Yes, they certainly work hard and for so little. I don't think I could handle a bus of loud kids. Excedrine headache number...

I go from 6:45AM to 12:52PM (0-5 periods.) I end school at the start of lunch. Most students at my school go 1-6, so they go from 7:45AM to 2:35PM. I like starting earlier, once I got used to it. It is nice to be home earlier in the day...the extra 90 minutes or so makes such a difference, or feels like it!

Another Texan chiming in here. Most of the public schools in TX go from 8:00-3:30 for 1st-6th grade and then some middle schools and high schools go a little later. Also most high schoolers I know have zero hour classes which started at 7:00 A.M. (Some Kinders are half-day and some are full day.)

<font color=navy>My dd's school goes from 8-3, and on Fridays from 8-12:30. My ds starts school @ 8:15, and he & I leave @ 5:50 (if I'm on time), & pick up his friend & I drop them off @ their school by 6:15 or so. I used to drop off both my kids @ their school by 7am cuz I had to get to work. Now another mom picks my dd up in the morning, and I bring her dd home with us - saves us on daycare $, and my dd doesn't have to wait an hour in the morning for school.

The high school I teach at begins at 7:21 and lets out at 2:02. My kids don't start school (elementary) until 8:10 and they get out at 2:10. I have to leave home by 6:30 so they have to go to daycare for about 45 minutes in the morning and one hour in the afternoon, since my hours are longer than the students hours. I think the kids would do much better if school started a little later. In the suburb I work in the first lunch begins at 9:50--a little early for slushes and nachos if you ask me!

Our Middle/High School goes from 7:40 to 2:30. The elementary from 8:40 to 3:30. When I'm subbing I like the early shift.:D

I can't believe some schools start so early. I want the days back of sleeping until 7 a.m. Haven't done that since childhood!
