School closings for sickness already!

Sorry, but when it comes to being responsible for 19 children in my classroom, I'm not taking any chances about whether or not to wipe down common areas with antibacterial wipes. We're also practicing good handwashing techniques, because you'd be surprised how many children come out of the restroom or blow their nose and then not wash their hands with soap and water.

I personally don't disagree with daily upkeep of cleanliness. What I think is futile is when a certain number of kids come down with it (H1N1) at college and a group of parents decide to go to the college dorms and "disinfect" the dorms. I think it's a waste of effort. Sure, it's nice that the dorms got clean because they probably needed it, but it won't stop the spread of H1N1.

No school closing in our area yet, but there are numerous cases of the flu being reported in and out of schools. It's so early in the season; it does make me concerned about the rest of the fall and winter. A 9 year old boy in a neighboring town died Monday, and that death has been confirmed as a H1N1 death. I heard of another death a few hours north of here. In that case the little boy was 5 years old.

DD was in school for three days and I received an e-mail that several children went to the nurse with flu-like symptoms. They kept them in a separate area until a parent could get them and told the to see their physician. They are being extremely cautious this year.

There was a report on the news earlier today that several 4-H members at the state fair in MN have come down with flu-like symptoms, 2 confirmed H1N1 cases and 100 kids/adults sick. They are sending all the 4-H'ers home-usually the 4-H kids that win a trip to the state fair stay in dorms at the fair for the run of the state fair. Our schools haven't started yet so who knows what will happen then.
