The scholastic poll results are in. For those of you who don't know what this is, it is a mock election done in the lower schools, sponsored by Scholastic, where the children vote. It is run just like a real election, except the ballot only has the presidential candidates.

Obama wins in a landslide:

Obama - 57%
McCain - 39%

The votes are in, and Obama has won America’s youth vote in a landslide! No, I don’t mean 18- to 24-year-olds, I’m talking grade school here. Scholastic, that purveyor of books, news, and study aids for children, has tallied the results from just shy of a quarter of a million kids, and Obama beat McCain, 57 percent to 39 percent. So why does that matter? Because since 1940 the results of the student vote in Scholastic’s Election Poll have mirrored the outcome of the general election in all but two cases.

Students got it wrong in 1948 when they supported Dewey over Truman and in 1960 when they weirdly picked old-guy Nixon over Kennedy. So for almost 50 years kids have predicted the eventual winner. Ain’t that precious? Student’s also exercised their right to write in, with Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, and Stephen Colbert all getting votes — but Hillary Clinton out in front with 11 percent of the write-in vote.

What was interesting was that in my swing state, Colorado, McCain won by 61%. All the news pundits have our state in Obama's column.

It is going to be an interesting and very historic night no matter which candidate wins. I am so excited to be a part of it this year.

I've been wondering about this poll, because it's been pretty accurate in the past.

I find that somewhat silly. Many kids don't even understand politics. I would bet that those results come from them voting for who their parents talk about alot.

Which is exactly why the poll is such a good indicator of the general election results.

I remember my kids doing it at their school. I was amazed at how detailed it was and how much they learned about voting.

My kids did the Scholastic poll and they talked about it a lot in class and again at home. They were confused about some of the issues but I think it's pretty hard to relate to the issues without the life experience necessary to understand them.

We are not a political family, and I did not come to a final decision until a few days ago, so I doubt they voted based on what they heard at home.

They also did a school-wide vote on Monday. I am interested to see how that turned out.

Finally we took them to the polls with us this morning. I do not want them to feel intimidated by the process.

I love the Scholastic Poll. Thanks for posting!

I love it too. Especially since it has been one of the most accurate polls in the history of the general election, as it has only been wrong twice since 1948. That is a pretty impressive accuracy rate.

Just walking around my kids' school yesterday, I see a clear bias for Obama. My kids can rattle off facts about Obama like crazy yet are stumped when asked about McCain. Obama is talked about more, there is more literature available on him, there are more pictures of him on the walls and the pictures are of a very attractive, smiling Obama while they have pictures of a cranky, old looking McCain. The coverage is so bias. Even my 6 year old said of the Scholastic cover "Barack Obama is smiling gooder than John McCain." Even a 6 year old can see it!

One kid in my 10 year old son's class had three "I Voted" stickers on his jacket and joked that he voted three times. The teacher's response? "What are you? A republican?" Nice. :sad2: No bias there. :rolleyes1

It's no wonder that he won. They pretty much set it up that way.

McCain won at my kids middle school....595 to 370
then there were about 60 votes for others..like nader..etc.

Just outside of Detroit, Michigan aka Unionland. I had no doubt that Obama would win here, both with the kids and with the parents.
