I love scary movies. The Excorcist is by far the scariest of them all!!! That movie freaks me out and stays with me for a very long time. I can't really say I enjoy watching it though.
Now Halloween, my personal favorite, that I enjoy!!! And The Shining I enjoy. I loved The Ring too. I guess I love lot's of the campy ones too, like the original Nightmare on Elm Street. These are all great films, but I don't find any of them as truly scary as The Excorsist. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre just gives me the creeps, in an icky incestuos people kind of way, not a scary movie kind of way. I've never really understood the thrill of that one.
Whoever mentioned When A Stranger Calls, that is another terrifying film, wrecked my babysitting career when I was younger!!!!
Now as for The Village, I think what was meant about it being terrifying was not the traditional scary, but the concept itself. That's about all I can say without giving anything away.
