Before the days on internet/online music being everywhere, I would only buy 'greatest hits' albums where every song was a well-known/popular song. Many bands would put out an album with maybe 1-3 hits and the rest seemed like 'filler' music no one every listened to. Which genre of music you happen to like probably determines the bands you like best.

Me too.

In my teens and my 20s i went to a LOT of music festivals and concerts of all sorts of genres. Id be at Ozzfest one week listening to heavy metal bands, then a chili cookoff listening to country and blue grass music, then a reggae fest.

Live albums take me back to those times. I close my eyes and pretend I'm there. A couple live albums i have i actually was there for the recording!!

I have often wondered why they did that. It was like they intentionally took the time to write bad/mediocre songs I would think it would take similar time to write and do a good song vs. intentionally poor songs.

It's incredibly difficult to write 1 hit song let alone a dozen.

Most albums would be composed with 1 or 2 "hits" they would release a singles to sell the album and ultimately a tour.

Also many album are composed to tell a story. So some of the songs when listened to on their own may not be as appealing as they are listening to the album a a whole.

Bolded. I think the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's album may have been one of the first
pop', if not the first, to be an overall concept rather than just a number of unrelated songs pressed into a vinyl.

If Greatest Hits albums are cheating, so are Live albums as they don't do any of the duds during concerts.

I think it's more that they have to put 11 - 12 songs together to compose an album in a certain period of time. Sometimes, they don't know which ones will be hits. The record label chooses the songs that they will release as singles. Sometimes, they get it wrong.
