I love scary movies. The Excorcist is by far the scariest of them all!!! That movie freaks me out and stays with me for a very long time. I can't really say I enjoy watching it though.

Now Halloween, my personal favorite, that I enjoy!!! And The Shining I enjoy. I loved The Ring too. I guess I love lot's of the campy ones too, like the original Nightmare on Elm Street. These are all great films, but I don't find any of them as truly scary as The Excorsist. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre just gives me the creeps, in an icky incestuos people kind of way, not a scary movie kind of way. I've never really understood the thrill of that one.

Whoever mentioned When A Stranger Calls, that is another terrifying film, wrecked my babysitting career when I was younger!!!!

Now as for The Village, I think what was meant about it being terrifying was not the traditional scary, but the concept itself. That's about all I can say without giving anything away.

Oops, I forgot one thing, about the Amityville Horror. I have also always said, I will NEVER have windows like those in a house I own!!!!

I draw a distinction between true horror and a one-time jump in your seat scare. The Sixth Sense is an example of a movie that will make you jump in your seat the first time you see it, but never once afterwards. It's a good movie, but also a pretty cheap thrill.

True horror to me is the Exorcist. You just dread going into Regan's room, just like the characters in the movie do. The idea of your own child being possessed by a demon in her bedroom is just freaky beyond belief.

The Exorcist will never have an equal, IMO, as far as horror movies go. Cheesy slashfests like Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th don't even come close.

I chose Exorcist just cause it still can make me scared - even the music is so spooky. I think the TV version of "The Shining" was better than Kubrick's version - much more true to the book and therefore more scary.
I have to agree with the poster who mentioned "Freaks" - that was a disturbing movie. When they're all chanting "one of us, one of us" it makes my skin crawl. Another one that I love is "Dead of Night" which is an old English movie that tells various spooky stories. The creepiest one is about a ventriloquist's dummy that comes to life - the only thing I find scarier than clowns are dummies! :teeth:

Between the Exorcist and Shining, I had to go with Exorcist. I watched the Shining again recently and this one didn't scare me as much as it did when it first came out, but to this day I can't finish the Exorcist. It's that unnerving!

Another movie that I thought was scary was Hellraiser. That one gave me the spooks for weeks. Then if that wasn't bad enough, they had to come out with Hellraiser 2 which I thought was even scarier and more gruesome.:earseek:

Speaking of scary dummies does anyone remember the movie I believe was called "Magic" That was about a ventiloquist's dummy that came to life. It came out in late 70's/early 80's. I remember the commercial freaking me out. They used to run ads for it in comic books and even the print ad was scary.

I actually have seen everyone of the movies listed and I thought The Exorcist was the scariest of them all with Alien being a close 2nd. I remember my mother taking me to see the Exorcist when I was 13, I was not prepared for the head turning bit. Now, I read The Amityville Horror and saw the movie, the movie did not scare me nearly as much as the book.

I agree, my previous post was not as clear to some, as it was to me, for that I apologize; therefore, let me see, if I can clear up some of the confusion.

I do find some horror movies scary, for example, those that I listed, but, I do not find all horror movies scary. Nor, having seen scores of them, do I find a majority of them scary. Indeed, there are a number of film generas: the thriller, science fiction, fantasy, etc., that I find far scarier then the horror genera.

Of those films listed on the poll, I have seen "The Blair Witch Project," "The Evil Dead," "The Omen," "Psycho," and "The Shining." None of which I found as scary as "The Haunted Mansion."

Thus, what I find scary, someone may not find scary, and what someone finds scary, I may not find scary. Or, fear is such a personal emotion, what scares you, may not scare me, and what scares me, may not scare you. And I should not sneer at the fears of others. Thank-you for reminding me of that.

As I said, I hope this post will clear up some confusion of my previous post.

Happy posting!

Easily Halloween.

Halloween 2 was very good. 3 was AWFUL. 4 and 5 were ok. 6 was AWFUL. H20 was decent. Ressurection was probably the third best behind 1 and 2.
