Scammed

:confused3

Did you have any specific suggestions?

I'm surprised people fall for these scams; I find these scam emails every day in my spam folder.

DD would not have fallen for a spam email. It was a text. She is a college kid, living at home, working PT, with very little $$, so she signed up for the BoA text alerts. She gets texts from BoA all the time! LOL. They are usually that her balance has fallen below $100 or $50, which for her, happens often. Or weekly about her direct deposit, or that I transferred her $$. This was in the same format. And when she did call, it said BoA and had the BoA chime sounds.

That said, she realized her error as soon as she hung up. She is furious with herself. It will be ok, she learned a valuable lesson.

PS DD called, because SHE is set up for text alerts from BoA, she gets them for low balances, and when direct deposits are credited, etc, so it was not weird to her that they would reach her by text. And she said when she called, it even had the BoA chimes or something. :guilty:

This is true! I have Bank of America! Wow, they are getting smart! What a mess. Thank you so much for posting this. I will stay alert!

I probably dont have to say this, but I always provide this advice.

Never click on any link in any email from your bank/credit card/insurance company/etc. ever. Do not ever provide information to anyone on the phone when THEY CALL YOU. ever.

Even if you get a "YOUR ACCOUNT IS ON FRAUD ALERT, CLICK HERE TO VERIFY" email, with a phone number and such, ignore it. Go to the website for that company, and call them back on a real 1-800 number that you find there.

I have gotten scam texts as well. I used to get ones saying that I had won a WalMart gift card. I just deleted these.

I have one rule and that is no text or any sort of financial information on my phone. I have never sign up to receive text alerts or downloaded an app for any of that stuff. I have never received any text fake or real from financial institutions. People need to realize how easy is to get the information from your phone as well as getting you phone number.

Get the credit monitoring services for your daughter now that they have all her information.

This afternoon, DH and DD (age 22) both got texts from "Bank of America" urging them to call a certain phone number.

DH called me right away, I checked our balances, and saw we were fine. (DH does nothing with our banking). I googled the phone #, and saw it is a scam. No harm, no foul.

5 minutes later, DD calls me. She got the same text, BUT SHE called the number back, and gave them ALL and I mean ALL, her personal information! She is at work, or I would have prevented this. She realized it was odd, and called the REAL BoA 5 minutes later. They said scam, and closed her accounts off, will send her a new debit card. They said, not to worry, you are flagged to someone trying to open a new account, etc. But jeez, she even have her SS#!! Couldn't the scammer just go to Chase and open a card or something. And shouldn't they send her new checks and everything?

She is freaking out, I am looking for advice on what to do next, to prevent this error from being a full fledged identity theft.

I got a text from BoA like this last week. I don't have a BoA account and I never give my cell phone number to banks, credit cards, etc., so I knew it was a scam.

I can see how it would be easy for your DD to fall for it since she does get texts from them on a regular basis.

OMG!! Someone tried to use my wells Fargo account. Gee better call them and freeze it.

Wait a minute, first I have to open an account to do that. Details, details
