Scam Warning

A friend shared a Facebook post today. It was a fake announcement of a contest from Disney Cruise Line, only it's not. This is a scam I saw at least four times yesterday for other companies. Don't know what the reason for it is, but what the scammers get you to do is re-post on your timeline with a comment of some kind. Supposedly if you do, you're eligible for a drawing for free cruises (for the Disney one). BE AWARE: it comes from "Disney Cruises." This is NOT our Disney Cruise Line. Easily verified - if you go to the page, they have minimal "Likes", not the million or so the real Facebook page has. Just wanted to pass the word.

I see these repeatedly. Its so obvious to me they are fake, and I report them immediately. But everyone I know keeps falling for them.

When I see that someone on my feed has fallen for these I try to let them know. I have even posted on my own page about all the scam sites and how if you go to them they do NOT have the green check mark that tells you it is the legitimate site. Most have a Period at the end of the site name or some other mark or word that changes it but still looks like the right one.

I haven't "liked" any of the scams like these, but a couple of friends have. What happens when they do? Does it automatically give the scammers access to personal information via Facebook, or do you have to fill out some kind of a form to enter the fake contest?

As I understand it what they are trying to do is to increase the number of page likes. They then sell the page to a different business who changes the name and instantly has a large following.
