Say Good Bye to Maelstrom....A 'Frozen' Ride is Definite

Hey - the title of this thread is finally accurate!!! Looks also from Tom Staggs description that it is NOT a light overlay, it's a full blown "Frozen" ride: So, those of you that *hate* this idea, will you put your money where your mouth is and stop going to Disney World?

I agree if you don't like it don't go and how many people aren't going to go not enough to stop Disney from doing something or to change things. The things that upsets me and many others is Disney has the capability to do big incredible things and they don't. Disney could build a new frozen ride by itself without having to get rid of maelstrom and better yet it could be built in the MK.

I also hate how they are getting rid of the culture Disney told CMs they will be moving them to other places Norway just won't be Norway anymore. Each country has a cultural aspect even Mexico with its three caballeros attraction. At least that has a Mexico tie in, this frozen one most likely won't have any cultural tie in to the country of Norway. World showcase is a showcase it's supposed to showcase the countries of the world. I told this rumor in May of this year it's now September, it took five months to come true.

Well, I'm sorry for those who love Maelstrom. I know what it is like to see a beloved ride go.

But...my DD is thrilled! She can't wait to go ride it, so yay. At the end of the day, her face lighting up at seeing this is what I care about, so I'm a happy mom.

I'm still anti-Avatarland though, lol.

And for how ever long this takes, epcot will officially have 2 rides worthy of a fp, and your still forced to choose one.

Maelstrom represents less than 1% of the total attractions found within WDW. It would be a little bit of a knee-jerk reaction to quit "cold-turkey" over one ride, wouldn't it?

Maybe I should be more sympathetic to those that want Maelstrom to stay as is. Disney took away two of my very favorite things (Tiki Room and Adventurer's Club) and I was very upset about both, so I get if this is a favorite of yours why you would be upset.

I just saw something on twitter saying that the last day is October 5...don't know how true. I'm glad my family went on it this past April--was always one of my favorites.

I know I am not treading any new ground here, but why can't EPCOT be EPCOT and WDW do character-based rides/attractions in MK or DHS?

I miss the spirit of the old EPCOT.

I think most people are ok with change for a dated ride. the issue is that by introducing frozen they risk losing some of the culture that makes epcot special.

Point noted...I understand what you are saying. That makes sense. Don't kill me when I say this...but I don't really get into Epcot in the first place. LOL I know there are die hard Epcot lovers here, and I don't mean to offend, truly! I'm just not one of them...and having a Frozen attraction there would get me excited about Epcot again. Just my thoughts, and I know that others will disagree. For what it's worth...and that might not be anything at all. We always kind of remarked that the less popular characters were outside of MK...I think it would be great for Epcot to get the most popular princesses on the face of the planet. (...at the moment...)

I don't care if I'm going to get beat up by a bunch of APs/WDWMAGIC members for this but: I'm not crazy about the Epcot Center-era. I don't see the appeal in the older versions attractions there that all I hear is people want them back, people want them back. I'm more than happy with Epcot as it is today. Keep in mind I'm younger so I grew up with what's in the park for now (though Test Track was still GM and I've kind of accepted the change but still miss the old one)

As for Frozen, honest to God I really wanted one once I saw the movie. Yeah it's on everyone's mind because the popularity blown too much out of proportion, but honestly I just ignore them and enjoy the movie as only I can. As for Maelstrom, I can live with the change. Yeah I'm upset that this cute little dark ride is leaving but it's never been a real highlight compared to the other dark rides on property. It was neat while it lasted and I hope the repurpose the trolls, and find the polar bears/puffins a nice new home

It will close around October first and I've heard anywhere from 12-18 months.

First off - I didn't say I was upset to the point I wanted to protest it, but actually I did in a way. I STILL try not to spend money at DTD dining or merchandise some 6 years later. (Other than the Lego Store - unfortunately that is our only access to open legos and the price is too good!) The tiki birds I was upset at, but was not worthy of quitting WDW.

In the end I forgave them when they returned them to (almost) the former glory, in fact I said I will forgive them all bad things they do in the next 10 years, so even if I gave a fig about Maelstrom I would forgive them.

I edited my post because I felt like I came off snarky the first time - but I'm with you. I'm super psyched about Frozen and pretty much have the same sentiments. Glad I'm not alone!

Nor have any of us pro-Maelstrom folks (within this thread, anyway) muttered anything about boycotting Disney. YOU are the one who put those words into OUR mouth...

I'm sure it's already been said but to me, Frozen doesn't fit with the Epcot theming. This park is about cultures from other lands and people who are interested in that love that park for just that reason. Plus it's a bit more adult centric and if Disney doesn't want to appeal to that demographic then I guess they can put some version of the various movies into every area of Epcot. Seriously, do they think they'll draw lots of little kids begging to go to Epcot just to see Frozen? It's not the Maelstrom itself, it's the whole atmosphere.

Although it's popular now I don't see Frozen going down as a classic, like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast or Snow White or even Tangled.
Oh well, when it runs it's course and is passé then it'll be replaced. It just seems like an attempt to capitalize on a current popular movie that doesn't really fit the mold of the true classics. The majority of popularity is with little girls age 3-10, not like others that even adults love.

Kind of like Avataland.
A lot of these new things/expansions seem like Disney's attempt to match another theme park's huge success of a particular SERIES of movies......

Would never all-out boycott Disney over this move....but I definitely don't like the direction things are headed. Hope all the Frozen nuts are happy....and all the parents that enable their kids. Have fun waiting for hours in what's left of Norway, I'll be in the other countries.

I don't care if they change the attractions, it's the spirit of EPCOT they are changing.

EPCOT used to be about hope for a better future and the ability for mankind to come together to make a better world. That vision came directly from Walt Disney and can be seen in classic attractions like Carousel of Progress and It's a Small World. EPCOT was a place where that vision was celebrated, and the other theme parks were for characters, etc.

Now that is slowly changing. I don't mind them updating the rides (in fact we have enjoyed all the various iterations of Spaceship Earth) but it's the loss of that original, Walt Disney-inspired EPCOT vision that concerns a lot of us.

Just for the record, I love Frozen and I am well over 10 years old without children. I still am not sure how I feel about all of this, but there are actually adults who like this movie.
