Say Good Bye to Maelstrom....A 'Frozen' Ride is Definite

I can't believe the ridiculousness I'm hearing. Boycott WDW? Never go again? Seriously? Good, go! Less people the better for me. WDW doesn't need the handful of Drama Queens who would boycott over Malestrom, and if it's thats consuming to you that you would get that upset you defiantly need a new hobby. Go camping instead.

I don't think it going to be anything exciting. Maybe it will be who knows. But by 2016 I think the passion for Frozen will have quieted down a little.

Also Let's just take down a real Country because there's no money in it and put up a fake one that will bring in money hand over fist. No one will notice.:thumbsup2

Man that was pretty cynical even for me. :worried:

The problem is that now it is 2014, and a lot has changed. In the 80's, if we wanted to see even photos of a foreign country, there were some books available at the libraries, or the occasional TV show, or national geographic.....

Global access has changed so that the world showcase is losing it's wow for the younger generation. And I guess for almost all generations..

And not to mention how international travel has increased in this same time period.

i do recognize this as being the main problem with EPCOT...completely. The internet, frankly, killed alot of the appeal of the concept because everything that is conveyed and was somewhat unique can be found in a click or touch within nanoseconds...
that's also why i believe that their sponsorship premise - which it would not have been built without - is also gone permanently.

So EPCOT will have to go another way...

but the reality is that they are increasing prices and profits and they don't want to pay what's necessary to keep up the park in modern terms...
so now we have cartoon princess peddling crap - and that's what this is no matter how drunk off the 'Aid you are - that will look silly in five years.

And it will...because again, people are again appointing a new longterm king (or queen) in this case without running a background check.

you know how the little mermaid stuff has a nice little wait but isn't a major draw? yeah...this will be there before you know it too.

I'll stand by that and wait and see...not at all going out on a limb with this assessment.

people will..."let it go".

Disney is looking to make money…Frozen is soooo popular they HAVE to capitalize on it. This would be a very smart move for them. It would attract families with younger children to that park. Families that wouldn’t normally spend much time there. Genious!! So, all of you ranters…..just “Let It Go” (sorry couldn’t help myself):rolleyes2

Anywho….,,,We go to Disney World every year and until recently we usually pass on going to Epcot because the kids were young and bored there. Over the last few years my husband would hop over and take our son because he was now interested in the attractions. But my daughter wouldn’t give up Magic Kingdom to go. Now that she is 10, she is somewhat interested in going. Last year we hopped over to go on Test Track and Soaring. After that we did a quick walk around the “world” and then back to MK we went. With a Frozen attraction we would most probably spend more time there = more $ for Epcot. Besides… Malestrom?? Never went on that ride once… They also need to get rid of or update the France (movie or whatever they call it attraction)!!!!

:)Sorry about the above post being so BIG ....new to the forem and not sure of how everything works....Promise, I'm not yelling!!!

no big deal...welcome aboard.

as far as the "boredom" with apparently the entire concept of EPCOT...my sympathies.

I don't know about others but telling me to "Let it GO." doesn't help matters.
It just makes it worse. But I am really starting to dislike that song.

AND I LOVE Idina Menzel. :sad2:

I understand the reason for having a Frozen attraction but in WS on the slimest of connections just feels wrong

Agreed... I think it is a stretch to expect it to last until 2016 for the opening.... unless they have some sequels planned. You would think if there is ever a time to do some accelerated construction, this is it.

So we know that the old Epcot doesn't fit any more, but what could be done to fix it? I guess that isn't our job.

The problem with Disney sequels are that they are TERRIBLE most of the time.

Including some of the Pixar junk that's being churned out.

If the sequel script doesn't have at least a decent chance of being close/respectable to the first...you don't make it.

Unless its just about the junk.

Well, I'm going to miss it. I like Maelstrom. In fact, LH and I will be one of the last riders since we will actually be there 2-5 Oct.

We were all a bit sad when they changed PotC in Disneyland...both times...hated the change they made in the 90's, and I was sure I would hate the new additions...but, I have to say, I love the new looks. It helped add to the experience.

Maybe we will learn to actually love the new Frozen ride? Although, I'm not sure why they couldn't have both...they have lots of room at Epcot! Oh well...this is going to attract a younger crowd to Epcot, and perhaps to Norway as well.

So, good with the bad.

Rumors say it will stay as a boat ride mostly have the same track layout maybe a few minor changes, they are supposed to demolish the theater for the Norway movie for a new queue.

This would make the most sense. Because, the more this sits and you get a chance to think about it - their hardest part is figuring out the logistics, much more so than animatronics and ride mechanisms.

Things like:

Crowd management- I'm assuming they've got to use some additional space somewhere- look how just the M&G went, earlier.

Plus, you have to take into account/plan for crowd and line management for events like F&W

FP+: is it a ride and/or an M&G? Are they really considering pouring guests off of a ride into an M&G...??

WS hours of operation - I mean, if "Frozen" is anywhere near as popular in 2016 - are you going to open WS at 11 - especially when the ride and M&G first premier? How do you manage that? Short term, long term, and the demographics of the change. This is not trivial not trivial

And, there's from Oct 5th until sometime in 2016 to deal with the capacity hit: daily in-Park and FP+ ressies.... and so many other things

Look, I've been very up front with how much I don't like this. So feel free to call me subjective. Because I am on this one.

But, the more you look at this, and how they've botched the announcement...

It just reeks of a "not fully baked" plan from so many angles - tactical and strategic

Lame. Maelstrom was always short but a ride with so much potential using the same layout will be just sad for me. I was kind of hoping to bring the mystic manor system over to, you know, simulate ice skating and when you look down see ice and shininess

If that was the case, they just needed to put A and E where the movie was. No need to redo everything.

I think we know why this isn't fully baked. This is a knee jerk reaction to capitalize on the movie's popularity while they can before it sails off the cliff of popular culture. That said, I am a bit puzzled by the long construction time. We know that Disney can set the pace of construction, so it would make the most sense to get this up and running as soon as possible. I guess the half baked philosophy follows the construction process as well.

Regarding the meet and greet that's been stated, I'm of the opinion that the whole pavilion is going to see an overhaul, and perhaps that's the reason for the long construction time. As you mentioned, the previous meet and greet for Anna and Elsa failed miserably there with crowd control and they've got to find a way to manage that and the queue for the attraction. I don't see them being right next to each other.

Aw, it might not be terrible. Look how awesome the Cars Land came out. Disney is in their prime. They're not going to disappoint when so many people, both fans and haters, are expecting something top notch. I bet they are going to use the old Maelstrom line, but I'm quite sure they will add on so it's not so short...or else I will become fulcrum turned hater.

Even for Disney, officially announcing on Friday that it's closing in a couple of weeks until sometime in 2016 - with no real detail whatsoever about the new ride, the rest of the Pavilion, etc.....

The message and the announcement weren't even baked. And they're usually very good at that.

It just seems they've a lot more work to do on this and I don't think the ride itself is going to be the hardest part.

Just think about what happened before with the M&G, and now think about plopping what will be perceived as a must-do main attraction and M&G into a narrow walkway that only flows bi-directional.

They need the time....

You and the poster you quoted are acting like people are attacking you. I haven't seen much of that, just people expressing their own views, which may not agree with yours and frankly, no one is talking down to either of you that I've seen, (unless you're Disney family or large stockholders). Now if that keeps you from this site? Who're the ones with a problem:confused3
Those who are expressing their aversion to this move or their disappointment, are entitled to their opinion just as you are yours.

Kind of overly dramatic reaction to their opinions, don't you think?

...

That's the key, pretty much the only thing that matters in this discussion. You can cut away all the nostalgia and sentimentality. Disney built Epcot based on an "Other People's Money" vision, far more than any vision of world peace, culture, or education, and when Other People (the countries, corporations & tourist organizations that helped finance the park) lose interest the direction of the park flounders. pay attention to AK in 10-15 years when James Cameron's money starts to wane from the Avatar expansion.

And look how... "Meh"... most of New Fantasyland turned out. Unfortunately, the track record in recent years has proven to disappoint more often than not. I'm hoping they prove me wrong, but as half-baked as this whole project seems, I'm not overly optimistic...
