Saw Wicked in Tampa last night

I know there were several threads in the past about Wicked, so I thought I'd post a mini-review.

First of all, my DD and I saw this in NYC on Broadway last spring. That was a weekday matinee, and was a 13th birthday Mom/daughter special trip.

This time, our group included DD (almost 14), DS (12 1/2), me, and my DM (late 60s).

I bought the tickets as the families big Christmas gift. When I took DD to NYC, DS was a little bummed that he wasn't going. We had planned on seeing it at the Kennedy Center, but life happened, and we ended up moving to Tampa. The kids had said something about not being able to see the show now. So once I saw it was coming to Tampa, I knew that was the big gift for this year.

Our tickets were Row S, slightly right of center. Our tickets in NYC were row Z, slightly left of center. These tickets were head and shoulders better. NYC we had the balcony blocking our upper view. Nothing in our way here, and we seemed SO much closer.

We really didn't have any spare time, because there was traffic on our way there. We walked in about 15 minutes before showtime, and were in our seats with about 6 minutes to spare. Theater was PACKED, but everyone was fairly respectful.

The show itself was wonderful! Everyone had great voices, and I thought the staging was very similar to Broadway. I had seen some complaints about limitations of the theater, but there was nothing apparent to me!

One thing that I thought was neat, but some people might not have liked was the interaction between Ga(G)linda and Elphaba. I think these two people have been playing these roles for at least a year, and IMO, they really interacted exactly the way you would expect the characters to act! In the "Loathing" number, I was cracking up at the way they imitated each other. DD pointed out that this hadn't happened in NYC. And in "Popular" they were actually cracking each other up! I really felt like they were enemies who became friends.

This Fiyero was excellent too! I thought he did a good job of maturing through the show, seemed to show this mostly through body language, which seems like it would be very hard to do. And a great voice!

The Wizard was played by the guy who played Steve (Marcie's husband) on "Married with Children", and I was surprised at how good his voice was. Now I personally think the Wizards songs are the worst songs in the show, but he did a good job with the material. I will say that "Wonderful" was my mom's favorite (probably a generation thing!) She said "I was tapping my feet to that one!"

My 12 1/2 year old son thoroughly enjoyed the show. He was beaming from ear to ear, and singing the songs this morning as he was eating breakfast. We did end up with a few souveniers from the stand. They were pricey, so beware (plain t-shirt was $30, baseball hat was $20, mug was $10, small poster $15, soundtrack $25). But I figured it was worth it for the memory.

Overall, it was a terrific evening. Cheap?? No. But worth every penny in my opinion.

We saw it in Tampa also on Jan. 21st. My daughter had seen it in NY, one of Idina's last performances as Elphaba, and said the cast in Tampa was quite comparable. I myself didn't care for Galinda's voice as much as Kristen's, but then, I've been listening to the soundtrack for 2 years now. But I thought the actress did fantastic in her mannerisms.
It was a spectacular show and I will definitley be seeing it again.

I saw this at the Kennedy Center and was very disappointed in my seats, so it really messed up the show for me. But I agree that the interaction between Elpheba and Galinda was excellent.

My co-worker saw both the NY show and the Wash. DC show and he felt the "traveling" Galinda was much better than the one he saw in NY.

Nice to hear so many are enjoying it on the road. My dd and I will be seeing it in Boston on April 22. She's so excited. I'll have to tell her how you guys enjoyed it!! Thanks.

DD saw this in Chicago back in October, and LOVED it.

The Chicago cast has Ana Gastmeyer (from Saturday Night Live) as Elphaba.

We tried to get tickets to the Kennedy Center for our big Christmas gift, but got locked up in the ordering system and it kept kicking us out.

DS11 is a HUGE theatre buff and I wanted him to see this because I love the music. I bought the book for Christmas with the intention of reading it out loud to the whole family, but found that it was VERY inappropriate for DS11.

Was there a LOT of sex in the play? The book was full of sex and ...well, kind of dark and ...twisted.

After reading the book, I am not sure that I would want to see the play, but I would LOVE to hear from people who have done both to find out their opinions.

No, the play is VERY appropriate for an 11 year old (mine went) and I don't recall any sex. There may have been some very light innuendo, but that's it.

The play is quite different from the book--more upbeat, no murders, not dark. Even ends differently.

Thank you for letting me know that the play is still appropriate! I will take him the next time we are able to get tickets.

I enjoyed the book too,...just didn't think that it was okay for my 11 year old! I felt like the book was written with as many layers as an onion. I know that I enjoyed the "story" part of it, but felt like each character probably represented different nationalities/religions/politics and that the story might be deeper if I could just figure it out. Then again... maybe it was just a story.

Well my DD17 thinks she is an expert ;) on "Wicked" since she has met and talks to some of the traveling cast. She went twice to the show in St. Louis. We also saw other performers in Chicago. We personally like the traveling show much better - DD LOVES Stephanie J. Block as Elphaba. Actually, she is a very nice person in real life, which made it easy to love her performance. The cast really do interact well together. It is a fun show to watch. Just as a side note, I think that Stephanie Block is leaving the show in March.

Yes, I had heard that Stephanie Block is leaving, and I think maybe Kendra Kasselbaum as well (She plays G/Galinda). I think I heard that the lady who plays Nessarose is the new Elphaba.

As far as the sex goes, I had asked this before taking DD, also after I started the book. Trust me, the play is MUCH MUCH more appropriate. There's an allegation to Elphaba's Mom being unfaithful at the beginning. Nothing at all like the books detailed discussion on this subject. And there is one scene with a fairly involved love song, but nothing more than a long kiss (Kind of hard to make out when you're belting out a song at the top of your lungs!!) at the end.

Hope you enjoy it!

I'm so glad you liked it! Trust me, the more Wicked lovers the better :)

I haven't seen it on tour yet, but being that I live in NY, I've seen the Broadway show 5 times. It's my favorite show, obviously, counting all those times I've seen it! And yes, Stephanie J. Block is leaving the tour cast in March, and is being replaced by Julia Murney. Ana Gasteyer just left the role of Elphie, and got replaced by Kristy Cates.

Sorry for all those facts! I couldn't resist. Anyway, glad you liked it! :thumbsup2

Edit: Personally, I think the show is perfect for the younger ages. The beginning part, with the mom and the guy, that's okay. They just sing, and suddenly, her stomach gets larger. And As Long As You'e Mine is fine, I clarified, and they are NOT having sex. They're just kissing, and like tkd lisa said, you can't tell when they're belting!

Any idea when in March she is leaving? I have tkts for March 5th. I'm excited to see it! :maleficen

I have to wait til next April to see it :( My College choir is doing selections from it, so that will keep me happy until then. I'm right now in the midst of reading the book too.

Wow, you're cutting it close shamrock! Julia starts on March 8th. You will proabably just make seeing Stephanie, whom I hear is incredible, and you'll be seeing it really close to her last day, which are very emotional and exciting performances. Have fun! :woohoo:

Suzi,

I am not sure how far you are willing to travel to see Wicked, but the show will be in Atlanta in May. It is very appropriate for an 11 year old, and nothing nearly as dark as the book.

Linda

Thanks Linda (I remember you!) I will see if a road trip can be arranged!

Stephanie's last show is March 5th. You should see her. It will be amazing. Julia Murney is replacing her. Jenna Leigh Green (Nessarose) will be leaving fairly soon after Stephanie. Kendra Kassebaum is staying with the tour, but she has quit doing matinee shows (this has been the situation since st. louis).

this is the DD--go see Stephanie!

Suzi,

I remember you too! Now that I live a bit closer, maybe I can make it to one of your pin parties sometime.

I love Wicked and had the opportunity to see the show on broadway several times before moving from NYC. You are right about the book...so many layers and very very political. The play is not nearly so, but does touch on some very important issues.

It touches on not judging people based on how they look. Elphaba was perceived as bad based on the fact that she looked different and possessed many powers. She tried to use them for good, but they just weren't taken that way. It also focuses on the idea of good and evil....again, based largely on appearances.

The show focuses on deep friendship, and what happens when that is lost. It is a love story....love for a sister, a partner and a friend. It shows what can happen to us when just one person believes in us. It is a story of acceptance, and how much that means on many levels.

I think that it is a show that is wonderful for families...and one that can be used to teach many life lessons.

If you haven't already, pick up the soundtrack. The last song, " For Good" is one of the prettiest I have ever heard.

I kept wondering the same thing. It was very hard getting through the first part of the book because of this. I have the soundtrack and it sounds so different from the book. EVery time we go to the movies, they play music (like a radio station) before the movie starts. I think they call it Movietunes. They always play Popular, so I had to get the soundtrack because I liked Popular and I had already started reading the book.

I couldn't imagine how people would take their young children to a musical based on this book unless they changed it a lot.

By the way, does Nessa have arms in the musical?

We saw Wicked in Toronto last March... i thought it was very well done but it didn't 'capture' our hearts like Lion King :goodvibes which we have seen 5 times (and have tickets for again this summer in London :) )

I wouldn't see Wicked again and my DD12 didn't want the soundtrack when I offered.
