Saving Mr. Banks

Scene 1.... shirtless Walt Disney played by Ryan Gosling draws Mickey Mouse Scene 2.... shirtless Walt Disney played by Ryan Gosling directs movies Scene 3.... shirtless Walt Disney played by Ryan Gosling tours Disneyland You're right. Ryan Gosling would've been a much better fit. The middle-aged women would be flocking to Disney Parks in no time. We're looking at Magic Mike crowds running to it's a small world right now.

Yes to this. Not just middle aged women. Not just women either. This version would be a commercial success and Ryan Gosling can act too! Why not?

Am I the only one who saw the fake movie poster floating around the web that had Ryan Gosling playing Walt in a biography. He looked a lot like him. A pp mentioned him so maybe I'm not the only one.

I don't know what his personal views are and I don't want to know. I could see him as Walt.

Is it because Walt has Canadian family members and Tom doesn't? Is it because Tom is part Mormon? I read all 3 of their pages and really can't find anything.

That must be it. Ryan Gosling is Canadian. Thanks, mystery solved.

I can't wait for the film to come out. I hope we get it in Europe as the same time as the US.

Personally, I think Hanks looks like he will be very good in the role (an Emma Thompson even better in her role).

Is anyone else reading Mary Poppins to get ready for the film???

Do you think it will be more entertaining for Mary Poppins fans or just Disney fans in general. As a Walt Disney fan, I'm not really interested simply because I think Disney made a mistake by casting someone in the lead role who has a completely opposite view than Walt on certain issues.

Tom Hanks has lost his charm but having him play Walt is just offensive.

Not saying that at all. It's easy to look up these two on Wikipedia to contrast their views. Not saying right or wrong, just opposite. I hope the movie does well. I'm sure I'm not the only Walt fan who just isn't interested in seeing it.

Oh really, PLEASE. just tell people what the heck you are talking about already. I also read both wiki pages and cannot find anything that wouldn't be in reference to some things about Walt that pretty much everyone would consider "bad" now.

Okay, you totally have me confused. Ryan Gosling apparently can do Walt because Ryan is sexy? :confused3

Hey, I'm all for sexy but .... this is Walt Disney we are talking about. Hardly beefcake.

Anyway, there was no Casting Director involved in offering the part to Tom Hanks. Bob Iger brought Tom Hanks onto the project shortly after the Disney Corporation obtained the rights to the screenplay and Tom Hanks was heavily involved in the development from that point. They originally tried to obtain Meryl Streep to portray Travers, and Emma Thompson was their second choice when they were unable to contract with Streep.

As far as the movie being a critical success, it is already being promoted as a lead contender for the Academy Award so that really isn't a concern.

Exactly. This is ridiculous. Because their views differed?? I don't think that's a requirement.

When I saw the pictures of Tom Hanks as Walt Disney, I thought they did a really good job. Ryan Gosling is just a bit too young to play Disney in my opinion.

Exactly. Ryan Gosling might could play Walt in the 20s and 30s.... but Walt of the 60s? Way too young.

No, not at all. You can just look up Walt on Wikipedia and compare his views with Hank's to see what I'm referring to. I realize I might be nitpicking but I may not be the only one to scrutinize who's portraying Walt Disney in a movie. Lol. Also, I'm not saying good or bad, or right or wrong, just opposites.

The job of an actor is to effectively portray somebody they are not. It doesn't matter if their views match. Also I am not overly concerned with what somebody's views were decades ago. The world has changed and people have changed with it. What Walt may have believed years ago may not be true right now if he were living in today's world.

I would imagine it would be pretty hard to fill roles if the Actors are actually supposed to be exactly like the characters they are playing. "Sorry Sir we cannot give you this part because the movie is about a serial killer and you have not killed anybody. Please come back if the situation changes." :rotfl:

Soon you will learn what 100 billion people have already learned at McDonalds. What it is like to be served.

It doesn't seem that way since she keeps referring to herself as a Walt fan.

Oh, well then I can only assume she wants to get in a dig at Tom Hanks, marriage equality, and diversity. Hope she explains herself.

Ok, I'm curious. Did they condense the whole movie into one hour, or did they show you just the first hour? I'm so intrigued! :rotfl:

They had a really cool presentation with several clips from the movie, each lasting a few minutes (probably less than 5 min. each). Between the clips, someone who was closely involved with the film and/or a Disney expert (sorry I don't recall the name or exact credentials) explained what it was we were seeing and the back story on Walt and P.L. Travers.

During the presentation, Richard Sherman came on stage to chat with the host about his recollections of working on the music for the film, and his association with Walt. He also played a few bits on piano and sang. Needless to say, that was just about worth the price of the cruise right there.

While Hanks doesn't bear much resemblance to Walt, my sense is that we'll use our "suspension of dis-belief" while watching the movie. I think it will be most enjoyable, and I'm glad to hear that there's "Oscar buzz" on the film. It looks like a quality piece of work. No explosions, nudity, special effects, no 3D, just an intriguing story told in an entertaining fashion. That was what Walt did best.:earsboy:

I'm pretty excited to see it. I've seen a few interviews with Emma Thompson and from what I can tell, she seems just perfect for the part. She is already getting Oscar buzz for this role. We're headed to the Magic on January 2nd so I hope it'll be shown onboard!

Color me also confused on the other comments re Walt. If I only watched and read the movies/books/TV shows etc of people I agreed with politically, I wouldn't be watching much. Unless you do something in your personal life which makes me not want to support you (Chris Brown and Mel Gibson, I'm looking at you), I could care less.

Saw a sneak preview of it last week. It was really good. Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson were excellent… as always. I liked that the movie also devoted a good amount of screen time to the Sherman brothers. It was really neat seeing how Walt ran his studio back in the day.

It is no secret that I LOVE this movie. I think Emma totally steals the show with her Travers role.

I think it's pretty hard to assume what "views" Walt would have in today's society, anyway. Gay marriage would have been a foreign concept to most people in the 1950s/60s, but it doesn't mean they couldn't be pro-equality in 2013. People can evolve and change and expand their opinions and views based on life experiences.

(I'm assuming the previous poster is talking about gay marriage, anyhow; it seems like that's what he or she meant but after being called out on it isn't willing to own up to it.)

Anyway, I'm really excited to see this movie, and from most of what I've seen/read it seems like Tom Hanks was a great choice to play Walt.

I'm curious if they show much of Disneyland in the movie? I saw where he takes her to Disneyland for the day, and I'm wondering how they made the park look like it did back in the 50's and 60's.

I don't care about either of their views. Walt's been dead a long time and Hank is an actor. His personal views don't interest me. I'm watching him on a screen, not dating him.
