So, I was doing some budgeting, and realized I spend about $250.00 per month on cigarettes. (Please, no flaming, I know all the health risks, thta is not the point of this thread).

I have decided to quit smoking, and I think I found a way to achieve that goal. For every day that I do NOT buy a pack of cigarettes, I am transferring the equivalent amount into a savings account. That way, I can see a decent increase on a daily basis. And if I slip up, I'm not a failure, I just don't get to put any money in the savings account that day-and it motivates me to NOT buy any the next day, because I want the money in my savings account instead!

In addition, I am also doing the 52 week challenge and putting it in the same account. You put in $1 on week one, $2 week 2, etc. At the end of the 52 weeks, you have over $1300. I figure between that and savings from smoking, I could have approximately $4100.

And what am I planning to do with that money? DisneyWorld! We had decided we are not taking a vacation next year, based on other things we want to do, however, this is money that would have otherwise been spent on something nasty. So I'm considering it a reward for quitting smoking. If I don't quit, I won't have enough money for the vacation.

Just a suggestion for others who may be thinking of quitting-you're taking money already allotted for and putting it to a better use. There are other ways to reward yourself of course (lump sum payment on a debt, home renos, etc), just thought I'd share my savings plan :)

Sounds like a great plan. Pixie dust to you as you live it out!

If I were more medically oriented I'd congratulate you on the ultimate reward of better health.

But, I'm a shrink and I LOVE your attitude and plan for dealing with setbacks.

Good for you, and I wish you all kinds of good luck!! My mom quit in January. She had smoked for 40 years. I am so proud of her!

Good plan & I just wanted to wish you lots of luck! I know quiting isn't easy, but once you get over the hump, you'll never look back! I've been smoke free for 15 years!! You can do it :thumbsup2

That sounds like a great plan, good luck! (I almost wish I had a bad habit to drop for Disney money). Lol

I lost both of my grandfathers to esophageal cancer contracted from smoking. I've watched several of my relatives battle for years to quit. It is a tough, tough thing to do and you have come up with a fantastic plan on how to do it.

Would be interesting to see how the same idea could be applied to other things as well, and I may just steal your idea. Neither DH nor I smoke, but we have a bad habit of eating out out of laziness. Maybe I'll just start transferring that money over to savings every time we don't....

Good Luck!

Disney vacations can really be a great motivator. Last August, I decided to take up running. I couldn't go 1/4 mile without having to walk:sad1:. I decided that I wanted to participate in a RunDisney event someday. I figured a 5K was a lofty goal because 3 miles seemed like a long distance to run. Well, after training for about 2 months using a couch-to-5K program, I was able to run 3 miles non-stop:banana:. At that point, I decided to really push myself. If I could go from not being able to run at all to running 3 miles in less than 2 month's time, I could do a 1/2 Marathon in 9 months:scared1:. I signed up for the W&D 1/2 Marathon and paid a $160 non-refundable fee. So now, I have no choice...I get up at 4am and run...I run if it is 20 degrees or 90 degrees...I run if I am tired...I run if I am sick...but darn it, I will finish that race::yes:: My friends think I am crazy:crazy2:, but I tell them I am just really motivated. If it takes a Disney trip to motivate you to quit smoking/lose weight/get in shape/or whatever...then just do it!!:woohoo:

Great motivation. I was thinking of something I could do to and I have a bad habit of stopping at McDs or Starbucks for coffee before work. I have gotten better and don't go everyday but I really need to stop.

Maybe I will try that motivation. That is $3-$5 a pop in the Disney fund...Thanks for the tip

We should have a thread with motivation for this type of motivation...

Good Luck to You! When I quit I went to whyquit.com alot, they have support groups, tons of information and pictures to keep you motivated. :)

That is a great goal and a very motivational way to make it happen. For me, my motivation was finding out I was pregnant with my 1st child. Although I was only 21, I had been smoking since I was 11 and had been a pack-a-day (or more :scared1: ) smoker since age 15. I never realized how bad I smelled after smoking, how bad rooms smelled after smoking and how long it lingers. You will be much happier, healthier and richer.

I'm with southlakejr. We eat out a LOT, at least 2-3 times a week. We really need to quit, and that $100-150 a week would really help boost the Disney fund. If I'd started a year ago, we'd be there right now :thumbsup2

Absolutely! Choice is, do you spend $20 at the drive thru, or $60 for a sit down meal OR do you throw a few hot dogs on the barbeque and throw $20-60 in the Disney fund? Makes it alot easier to say no to eating out when there is a different specified use for the money, what what better splurge than Disney? :)

Good for you! :thumbsup2 My DH wants to do the same thing, but just hasn't gotten a start yet. He has been talking about it for a couple of months, as we are planning a trip next year. He has quit smoking and started back up several times over the years. I have never been a smoker, so I don't really understand how hard it is.

I am going to share your post with him! Good luck!!!

Great plan! You can do it! Disney is great motivation. I quit cold turkey about 3 years ago and haven't wanted to pick it back since. Good luck!

Congratulations on quitting smoking.. I have been smoke free for 7 yrs now. I also went to Disney on the money I saved. I booked a 14 night vacation with Disney and every payday the money I would of spent that week on cigerettes I paid that on the trip, it was a great way to get me through the rough patches knowing I had a great trip planned...

I think this is a great plan you have clearly put lots of thought into. I also like this 52 week challenge and might have to give that a whirl myself. Maybe I will start that next month so that I have plenty of money saved up for food and souvenirs for our November 2014 trip. Thanks for sharing!

Love this idea! Have been trying to quit off and on for awhile but lose motivation pretty quick. This may just be the motivation I need. Good Luck to you!

Thanks for the encouragement everyone :) Not completely smoke free yet, but I just started this on July 18, and I've got $65.00 in the savings account so far. It's a start at least!
