So, I was doing some budgeting, and realized I spend about $250.00 per month on cigarettes. (Please, no flaming, I know all the health risks, thta is not the point of this thread).
I have decided to quit smoking, and I think I found a way to achieve that goal. For every day that I do NOT buy a pack of cigarettes, I am transferring the equivalent amount into a savings account. That way, I can see a decent increase on a daily basis. And if I slip up, I'm not a failure, I just don't get to put any money in the savings account that day-and it motivates me to NOT buy any the next day, because I want the money in my savings account instead!
In addition, I am also doing the 52 week challenge and putting it in the same account. You put in $1 on week one, $2 week 2, etc. At the end of the 52 weeks, you have over $1300. I figure between that and savings from smoking, I could have approximately $4100.
And what am I planning to do with that money? DisneyWorld! We had decided we are not taking a vacation next year, based on other things we want to do, however, this is money that would have otherwise been spent on something nasty. So I'm considering it a reward for quitting smoking. If I don't quit, I won't have enough money for the vacation.
Just a suggestion for others who may be thinking of quitting-you're taking money already allotted for and putting it to a better use. There are other ways to reward yourself of course (lump sum payment on a debt, home renos, etc), just thought I'd share my savings plan
