Hi!

We are planning a trip to WDW in 2021 for two weeks.

I can work out a basic package plan now, but how can I figure out the cost of inflation? I don't want to be caught out in the end.

Also what additional things would you add to your package that are a MUST DO that we should consider paying for?

Thanks!

I think Disney is fairly unpredictable. Tickets alone can increase 6-10 times from now until then.

Because it's unpredictable, I would double standard inflation, if not more. 10% per year wouldn't be an unreasonable place to start.

I think that 2021 is way too far into the future to be planning a budget or setting aside a list of must-do activities. Five years is a very long time when it comes to the changes that came come from Disney. The only guarantee is that it's going to cost more to go in 2021 than it does in 2016. I think that caldisneymomof2's estimate of 10% per year is kind of low, considering how ticket price structures have changed and hotel rates have skyrocketed, dining costs are way out of sync with the real world and transportation costs will be highly dependent on energy prices. If anything, I'd go closer to 12% annually and make sure that you compound that increase every year. So that if you estimate a price tag of $5000 in 2017, count on $5600 in 2018, $6272 in 2019, $7025 in 2020 and finally $7868 in 2021.

Don't forget to factor sales tax of 12.5% into your calculations on everything. Pay attention to the news as who knows what Florida may do to their tax rates in the next five years since there is no income tax.

If you are referring to add-on's to budget in for any must-do's I really don't think there are any that would make or break a trip. We have rarely done any add-on's. We have done the Christmas Party once and the Halloween Party once. That's about it for add-ons. As long as you are picking the resort you want to stay at and make sure you have enough time in the parks you will be able to have a great time. Dining options could likely change in the five years. But a character meal is always fun so you could plan one or two of those. We are early risers so we like to do a breakfast before park opening. A character meal is usually our biggest splurge.

As for inflation costs I keep a log of all our trips over the years and the cost (both Disney and non Disney). Even though we usually stay on DVC points I keep a log of my parents trip costs for them when they travel with us (just hotel and tix). Mainly just because I'm the "travel agent" for our group so I want to see what they paid in the past to know if it's a decent price or not. For 7 nights at Port Orleans Riverside with a 6 day hopper tix for 2 adults the price increased 20% from 2014 and 2016 (same time of year). My parents are particular about staying at PO-R so they could have possibly had the price remain the same if they were to stay at a different moderate. For comparison, in 2002 for the same trip the price in 2016 was 80% more (lol granted that's going out 14 years.....).

Keep in mind that 2021 will also be WDW 50th anniversary so they will have some special things going on or may have special ticketed events for that as well! I am planning for 2018 and 2021 too :)

We actually have already bought all our park tickets for both future visits already to save on the coming price hikes. I know that's not always an option, but buying tickets as early as you can when you know for sure how many days you want is a great $ saver.

I would start out by putting $25 a week away now. In four years, when you are ready to put down deposits and start booking, you'll have a little over 5K saved up already. That's the easiest way to do it IMO.

I am planning a 2018 trip with just my DD. I'm starting out by opening a separate account and just putting away $25 per week. That way I don't even feel it but I'll have a nice chunk to book the package in a year. I have other things going on in the meantime that I have to budget for (a DR trip, DS's senior trip to WDW, DS graduation expenses) so I don't want to feel this trip too much.

I love the idea of socking away a small amount of money each week! Unfortunately there is no way to accurately predict how much your vacation will cost. Thinking of what holiday party tickets, park tickets, and hotels cost 5 years ago and what they cost now is enough to make me cry.

JMHO but I'd rather go for one week next year or 2018, then another week in 2021 than wait 5 years to go for 2 weeks.
I know you weren't asking but just thinking out loud. :goodvibes
A lot can change in 5 years.

The OP is from the UK. Airfare for two shorter visits would be costly in comparison to one round-trip flight and a two-week stay.

Thanks for pointing that out. That's what I get for assuming. Flying from Europe changes everything. :goodvibes
