Saving Dole Whip Float Money (Update 2/27: TR Link Posted!)

I missed it too! Glad to see so many people on the scoreboard though. I think it's still fun to figure it out after the answers are posted though :)

I think getting each other a gift for the train ride back is an excellent idea. Or we could figure it out as we get closer to the date. The question is, I rarely ever want to leave your side, so wouldn't you know what I get for you? ;)

Man, I keep missing all the new rounds!!!

Maybe you'll get to play the next one!!! Hoping you get to play this specific round! :thumbsup2

Yeah, I like that there are so many names and that people keep getting added on! It's fun to see all the people having fun!

Maybe our ride home can have a gift OR even better, for our first day back at work on that Monday! Haha, that might be more important because we'll still be together when we're coming home. Hehe, I'll tell you and Ray to get a snack for Dani and me, and then we'll go shopping!

Naveen!

(Well, I think so, but I'm one letter off - but that's the one that fits)

(and sorry Sarah! :rotfl:)

:cool1:

Haha, I just went over it again ... was it Clue #4? I put 6th letter when it was 7th because I miscounted. I mean, it's not like it's my 4th year teaching math to 6th graders AND 7th graders :rolleyes1

Dang it! And here I saw she had a new round up and I'm thinking I'm going to get it. Way to burst my bubble.:snooty::laughing:

Yep clue #4 - I went over it like 3 times, then decided you meant 7 instead of 6. I have my degree in Math, and I can't count or add to save my life - so you're totally excused :rotfl:

Get ready for the next one! Haha, just not yet ... I just wrote the answers; the next round isn't done yet! I haven't even decided what character to do.

HAHA, I don't feel so bad then! Strangely, once I started teaching math, I can't seem to do math in real life. I can do it in the classroom, but when you want me to apply it, I whip out my phone to use the calculator. I guess there's only so much math I can do in a week (and I do actually LOVE the subject, always have!).

Signing onto your PTR! I have loved reading your TR-- and I am excited that you get to go again (with others this time)!

YAY, welcome to the PTR! I'm thrilled that I get to go with my cousin. Like I said, Dani and I don't really have AS much time as we used to. At one point, she actually used to live only 5 minutes away from me, and we went to the same junior high. We used to pass notes in the hallway and stairwells! When she moved a year after that, I was devastated. Now she's a good 50 minutes away or so!

And I'm also glad Ray's going because he's so weird and silly! We joked that Ray and I (the 2 Ray/Rae's) are going to be walking around being so random and that Howard and Dani are going to stand back and shake their heads at us, haha.

And of course, I'm happy that I get to go back with Howard!

Character Scrambler: Round 11 Answers

Congratulations to not_Joanna_eggs who got the correct answer of Naveen from The Princess and the Frog! Here are the answers and a little bit more detail for some of them!

Clue #1: The Pirates League = E
I love that they came out with another way for kids to get a "dress-up" experience without it having to be a princess. Of course, it gives the opportunity to the boys who have been missing out, but I also think it's fun because it seems more adult-friendly! Haha, not that I'd ever pay money to do that though. I'll just grow my own facial hair, thank you very much.

Clue #2: Port Orleans Riverside = V
I love the South, so why not?

Clue #3: World Showcase Lagoon = N
Determined to catch Illuminations during this upcoming trip!

Clue #4: Design-a-Tee = A
Howard and I checked out this store in April, but we didn't really look at the designs because there were just so many. I think this would be a fun way to get a personalized shirt without having to do it yourself (ex. getting a design from DIS and printing it on the transfer paper). It's a very creative souvenir, in my opinion. Of course, that store is connected to the scrapbooking store (forgot the name) that has a bunch of art things that I wanted to get, like the castle paper punch! I think I'll get it this trip!

Clue #5: Streetmosphere = E
As much as I love watching these street shows that typically aren't considered "attractions," I'm always afraid of being pulled in to interact with one of the characters! I'd much rather watch others!

Clue #6: Tarzan Rocks! = N
I remember seeing this show on the ONE day that I went to Animal Kingdom years ago. I don't remember much about the park since it was just once and I was only 13 or 14. I distinctly remember thinking that Tarzan Rocks! would be really boring. My cousins were excited to see it because they had seen a family relative's video of the show. I just thought, "It's a show; how fun could it be?" Boy, was I wrong! I loved it! I loved how the people skated in the aisles and all around, and that's why CMs had to stand there to make sure no one got out of their seats! Too bad that show isn't there anymore because I love Tarzan! I especially love the songs by Phil Collins!

Lastly, the reason why I chose Naveen is because I distinctly remember reading about Sarah's (wdwgirl03) character interaction with Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen at Magic Kingdom on her latest trip. I will eventually watch the movie ... haha. Yes, I didn't see it yet. I also haven't seen Toy Story 3 yet. As you can tell, I get really behind on movies! I can't watch them in the theater because my mind has a tendency to wander; I need the captions.

At the Contemporary Resort, you can find this 5-legged animal in a mosaic.

Clue #4 (2 words / 4th letter of 1st word): __ __ __ __ __ __ / __ __ __
Headed to Raglan Road? Get one of 2 dishes served with many forks. One of them is the Scallop Forest. This is the name of the other one!

At the beginning of this dark ride, make sure you look below you to see cookies on a plate formed to create a hidden Mickey!

I got overly excited and I didn't mean to post, but since I did anyway, I put Kerchak.

Character Scrambler: Round 12 Answers

Congratulations to HowWeird who got the correct answer of Kerchak from Tarzan! Here are the answers and a little bit more detail for some of them!

Clue #1: Tower of Terror = R
I don't think I'll EVER get on this ride again. EVER. I rode it when it first came out when there was only that one partial drop and then one full drop. I don't want to deal with the random drops! Haha, ok, in reality, I don't want to deal with ANY drops. Why put my stomach through the tension? Plus, the creepiness of the queue and the CMs is just too much for me. The rest of you Disney fans can enjoy it; I'm standing on a line for a different ride!

Clue #2: Merlin = E
Did you know Jim Korkis used to play Merlin? I <3 Jim Korkis just like I <3 Lou Mongello.

Clue #3: Goat = A
If we do some resort hopping in February, I want to look at the Mary Blair mosaics at the Contemporary! I feel like seeing the 5-legged goat is a DIS rite of passage or something.

Clue #4: Dalkey Duo = K
The AllEars description says this: "Dalkey-battered cocktail sausages with a Dalkey mustard dipping sauce $11." Um, can you say yum?

Clue #5: Peter Pan's Flight = H
My mom's all-time favorite ride! I was very excited to see the cookies on the plate on the table! I love those little touches. If you don't know it's there, chances are it won't be seen because the ride moves pretty quickly.

Clue #6: Toluca Legs Turkey Company = C
In April, Howard and I were trying to find a place to eat dinner. We didn't realize so many of the places at DHS close by a certain time! I thought we were going to end up having to eat a turkey leg! Thankfully, we didn't have to eat one because I'm not crazy about them even though there was a time that I loved them.

Clue #7: Boardwalk Inn = K
Since I'm located by the Eastern Seaboard, this resort didn't really fasincate me. Then I realized that any boardwalk near here wouldn't be as clean or as picturesque as the one at Disney! I'm kind of wanting to go there just to explore. Plus, I've seen many GORGEOUS engagement and wedding photos taken there!

Lastly, the reason why I chose Kerchak from Tarzan is because the movie Tarzan is just awesome. I'm tired. The end.

The "Getting There" Part

Before the 4 of us even knew that we definitely would have Orange Lake booked, Dani and Howard were looking at flight prices. We were trying to figure out just how much this vacation would cost each of us. I don't do airplanes often. The few times I've taken an airplane was, of course, with my family, so I never had to book anything myself. All I had to do was show up! So I left this all up to them.

Dani has traveled often (she went to Japan again this year!). She said that we should book a flight if the prices are "ridonkulously low" (her words!) even though we didn't have a place booked because we'd be able to get the timeshare even if it meant paying for it as opposed to using our actual timeshare week. We all agreed that this would be a wise decision since we definitely didn't want to pay crazy high flight prices especially since it's President's Day Week!

Then Dani sent this:

"Also, we can do a cheaper (but way longer) option. We can take the Amtrak down. It'll take like, 22 hours but a round trip ticket to Orlando would be about $240 ... cheaper than any flight we can get. But I don't know if you guys are willing to sit in a train for 22 hours. They have a dining car and stuff and rooms with beds if you wanna pay extra (I don't think i would though)."

AmtrakJax.jpg

It was an interesting suggestion because I had just read about Amtrak's Auto Train on someone's trip report on DIS! Of course, the Auto Train takes the car with it, but we wouldn't drive to Virginia (forgot where, don't wanna look it up!) first. It just wouldn't make sense. Either way, Amtrak suddenly became an option. Even though it would eat up 2 days of our vacation, it was a much cheaper alternative. All that saved money would be food money and park ticket money and car rental money! Plus, I hate flying ...

The emails went back and forth, back and forth, mainly between Dani and me. Hehe, Ray was overwhelmed with the TONS of emails that flooded his inbox since he was back in school and didn't have time to constantly read, but we couldn't help it! We were excited! We talked about the pros and cons over and over again. Going to an airport would be a hassle what with the luggage and security issue AND, more importantly, the possibility of a flight delay due to snow since we're going in February.

I finally emailed this message:

"Okay, so I think ... haha, at least for Dani and me ... I think Amtrak seems to be the way to go unless we get SUPER inexpensive flights. The saved money, less hassle, and the fact that some of us don't like flying (um, me ... I'd get nervous as it approached, but I'd do it for Disney!), shows us that Amtrak might be the better choice."

Dani said she too is very uncomfortable with flying because of motion sickness. She takes pills that get her groggy. I didn't know that she hated flying considering she flew to and from Japan twice! But I didn't feel so bad after the fact!

At the beginning of September, we got even more encouragement to use Amtrak with Dani's message that the flight prices rose so that they were now around $500! Whoa there.

So now it's decided. Unless there's an unbelievably inexpensive flight price (as in much less than Amtrak), we are getting there via AMTRAK! I think that'll make for rather unique "getting there" stories since I don't often or ever see it on DISboards. I'll go more in detail about the plans when we actually book the tickets. We haven't done that yet since we still have time and also because we're waiting to see if we're going to have 2 more people join us on our trip!

We are all really looking forward to the ride there though. Yes, it will take up an entire day, but we're excited to just have that experience. I know we'll all still have a ton of fun together. We'll bring our laptops and our DVD players. We've already decided that Dani's bringing the Harry Potter movies because I still have only watched the first 3 with her! I also think it'd be fun to borrow 24 from our other cousin since it's the kind of show that really makes you want to keep watching. I'm only 2/3 done with season 2!

Amtrak5August7_2009.jpg

The dining car is also something that really interests us. Dani and Howard both thought of Casino Royale (I haven't seen it). Haha, I thought of Alias when Vaughn was pretending to be someone else and had to meet someone in the dining car, but that's a whole other story! We'll be able to have some meals in the dining car, and I think it'll be fun to buy some snacks that we can only eat while traveling (and on the way back, we'll get Disney snacks for the ride back!). I know if I bring some papers to grade, it might force me to do that too (I'll probably assign a paper to be due before the vacation so I can get it done).

So that's how we're going to get there. Less stressful and less expensive than a plane! Less hassle and fewer stops than a car (and if you're following my April TR, you'll know that Howard and I already survived the car ride squished!)! Woohoo! We are EXCITED! Haha, yes, we're excited about AMTRAK!

Ok I had to Google Kerchak! I guess I have to watch Tarzan again soon!

Clue #7: Boardwalk Inn = K

I'm kind of wanting to go there just to explore. Plus, I've seen many GORGEOUS engagement and wedding photos taken there!

Don't forget anniversary pictures! ;)

Riding AMTRAK sounds cool!! I hope you do it so you can tell me all about it!

OK I wouldn't have gotten that round even if I was first! I don't even know who Kerchak is. :rolleyes1 From the name I would've guessed something from Emperor's New Groove. I am not good with those less common characters. LOL.

I love Tarzan because of the songs from Phil Collins and also because baby Tarzan is adorable!!! When I was a sophomore, the senior class used "You'll Be In My Heart" for SING, and I really loved it more.

Yup, and anniversary pictures!!! :lovestruc

I've been reading a lot of Amtrak things today; I'm really looking forward to it! There are good and bad reviews, but I do think I'd much rather deal with a delay or something on the train than for the plane. Planes just stress me out too much.

Haha, I actually haven't seen Emperor's New Groove! I know that I specifically wanted a K name because I wanted to use "Dalkey Duo" as a word because I want to eat it!

Iago!

I like these late night posts :cutie:

Haha.. had to get my answer in :)

Now for my comment on your post -

Yay for Amtrak. I definitely recommend upgrading to a sleeper car. I did 14 hrs in coach to a friend's wedding - it was pretty bad. But the train ride itself was fun. How exciting!

I went by Amtrak all the time in college-- from Providence, RI (where I went to school) to Penn Station. That felt like a longgg trip, and wasn't exactly cheap. It was really fun, though-- usually the ride home (to DBF lol) was more fun than going back to college. The seats are so much more comfortable than airplane seats!
I recommend booking a trip on an "off" time. If you travel in the early morning/rush hour time slots on a Friday-Monday, the train will be very crowded and chances are you will not be able to seat together. Heck, even two of you may not be able to sit together! Also, most seats are two per row, aisle, two more. There's usually only one "four seater" (two seats facing another set of two seats) every other car or so. So I definitely recommend traveling during "off" times. Plus, off times are always cheaper, too! (12-3 pm seemed like the least busy times)
I fancy myself a bit of an Amtrak expert (LOL), so let me know if you have any questions! It's definitely a great way to travel-- feels very old fashioned! DBF and I took a trip to DC on the Amtrak last year and had a lot of fun!
