Saving Dole Whip Float Money (Update 2/27: TR Link Posted!)

Round 22:

LAARAD
ALADAR - from the movie Dinosaurs

:cool1:

You are so good with the character scramblers! LOL. I am not a good speller...I'd probably spell something wrong!

Haha, I think I have to be a fairly decent speller if I'm a teacher! Although I've seen teachers with TERRIBLE spelling who have even "corrected" their students the wrong way (the student spelled it correctly!).

Character Scrambler: Round 21 Answers

Congratulations to wisblue who got the correct answer of Koda from Brother Bear! Here are the answers and a little bit more detail for some of them!

Clue #1: Galactic Hero = O
I am determined to one day get this ranking! I think that's why I like Buzz Lightyear more than Toy Story Mania. There is an attainable goal here! Plus, even though my thumb hurts, my entire arm doesn't have to hurt!

Clue #2: Haunted Mansion = A
I have to point out Mr. Toad each time we pass by because the ride reminds me of my childhood. Haha, not that I actually liked the ride; I was actually afraid of it! But I'd put on a brave face and tell myself it was in Fantasyland with all the other dark rides, so I shouldn't be so scared!

Clue #3: Doc = D
Supposedly the reason for not having Doc in the parking lot is because they didn't want to mix up Doc from Snow White with the boat dock.

Clue #4: Test Track = K
It amazes me that Test Track is the ride that goes the fastest because it's a ride I absolutely LOVE even though I don't want to go on things like Expedition Everest! I know it's different because there's a drop and all but still! Love the speed!

Lastly, the reason why I chose Koda from Brother Bear is because I've been really into the Build a Bear Workshop bears! They're just so cuddly and soft and you can dress them up and all that! Yes, I'm 26. Haha. Anyway, Koda just reminds me of those bears.

Character Scrambler: Round 22 Answers

Congratulations to Jennifer48 who got the correct answer of Aladar from Dinosaur! Here are the answers and a little bit more detail for some of them!

Clue #1: Tumbleweed = L
It was only recently that I learned that there was such a complex story for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad!

Clue #2 AND 3: Waldorf and Statler = A and A
One of my favorite parts of the Muppet show!

Clue #4: Morocco = R
It's amazing that the Imagineers have to think about these things. They have to realize the space they're in and how much of the space they're utilizing and make sure that the "show" isn't interrupted!

Clue #5: Venus and Adonis = A
We're reading The Shakespeare Stealer in class right now (8th grade), so I like that I was able to find a hint that had to do with Shakespeare!

Clue #6: Don Rickles = D
How funny must it be for relatives of Don Rickles (or any other character) when they go watch a movie and hear the voice they've known all these years!

Lastly, the reason why I chose Aladar is because Howard and I talked about how we could totally do Animal Kingdom on the Friday that Dani and Ray do WWOHP! I got all excited because I kept thinking about Dinosaur and Flame Tree BBQ!!! FUN AND YUM!

Soooo I'm lucking. :) I looked into Amtrack myself...but it's the same price as flying for me. So I'll go with flying cause I get their faster. But I live all the way across the U.S. soo yeah.

YAY DINA!!! Haha, lurk away!

Yeah, if it weren't saving us money, we probably wouldn't be doing Amtrak. Or maybe we'd only do it once to find out if it makes sense for us. However, since it'll be saving us all HUNDREDS combined, we might as well! We're getting exciting as we think about what we're going to bring as entertainment!

A Third Park?

Howard and I knew that there would be a day of our week that Dani and Ray would want to go to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. My cousin is a Harry Potter fanatic, so there was no doubt that she'd be there from opening to closing! Considering the ticket prices and the fact that Howard and I don't like rollercoasters, we're not going to be joining them on that Friday. We will, however, be watching all the Harry Potter movies on the way down though! I still only watched the first two!

Anyway, since Howard and I had a day to ourselves, we started looking at what we could do. We planned on going resort hopping and exploring all the resorts we'll never stay at but would love to see. We also figured we could go back to Downtown Disney to pick up Earl of Sandwich sammies for the Amtrak ride back the next day. I also read about bike rentals too! So many things to do on that day!

As I was reading a trip report though, I started thinking about how much fun it might be to go to Animal Kingdom! I've only been there once in my entire life, and it's the kind of park that doesn't require the whole day or running from one side to the next to catch each ride. It'd be a perfect park, don't you think? Plus, we figured we might feel a little sad if Wednesday were our last park day while Dani and Ray still had WWoHP. I mean, we have to get up early that day anyway to drop them off at Universal Studios. We might as well head to a park ourselves!

The three things that really get me excited about Animal Kingdom are as follows:

(1) Getting to ride Dinosaur!

draft_lens1496818module13297644photo_1231032166animalkingdomdinosaurride.jpg

The only time I've been on this ride was obviously during that one trip. Funny, I just realized that the last time I was there was when we were in Florida with Dani and her family! Anyway, I rode this when it was still Countdown to Extinction. I know I'll probably be really scared of the dinosaurs especially after having read Kingdom Keepers 2, but I think it's the perfect kind of thrill ride for me. It's not a coaster, so I can't get sick ... well, unless I'm so old that the bumpiness and jerkiness get to me! I don't imagine that it would though. I'm curious to know if I'll be like many other DISers who duck their heads down when the picture is taken!

(2) Understanding the setting of Kingdom Keepers 2!

518Wl-aX2SL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

I can easily picture the scenes for KK1 and KK2, but I had to use some imagination for KK2. It'll be exciting to "know" that Finn and the gang were in certain spots of the park!

(3) Flame Tree Barbecue!

p291152-Orlando-The_Flame_Tree_Barbecue.jpg

I've read over and over again that Flame Tree is one of the best places to use a counter service credit from the dining plan. Although we may not be on the dining plan for this trip, I'm eager to try out the food and get a taste of something different at a Disney park. Of course, Howard and I have recently started loving this restaurant called Big Ed's in New Jersey, but I'll still be eager to try this quick service! I mean, those onion rings look mighty yummy!

We do like that this is an option we'll most likely take, but we also like that it's not the end of the world if we're too tired to make it to another park. We both have days left on our no expiration tickets, so we can and we don't have to at the same time. It'll be another park to research though just like I had to research DHS for April's trip!

What are some of YOUR favorite things to do at Animal Kingdom? And for those of you have ridden it, just how scary or dizzying is Expedition Everest?

That sounds like an awesome plan! Maybe you guys can even visit AKL too, since it is so stunning there. AK is not my favorite park but I do like certain things there, I like Kali River Rapids, but do plan on getting wet (maybe do it as your last ride and leave a change of clothes in the car?
DH loves EE and that's because it goes backwards at a certain point. Definitely for thrill seekers only. The ride itself is fine except for the final last drop down, soooo scary (for me at least) I would say it's a coaster with a bit of character. not sure if I will do it again though

Since you're going early next year, I don't think heat would be too much of an issue so I think you will like the park a lot more than I did since I always manage to go at the hottest time of the year!

Definitely try the Jalepeno cheese-stuffed pretzel. It's the best savory snack in the park, IMO. Dinosaur is alright, I could take it or leave it, but the safari ride must be great that time of year.

Flamed Tree BBQ looked good. We didn't eat there but we were able to see other diner's foods and it looked delicious!

I've still yet to try yak and yeti...one day we might!!

We're hoping to stay at AKL or Kidani for our honeymoon! I think those pictures are gorgeous; I can't imagine how great it loks in real life!

Yeah, I'd probably put AK as my least favorite park because many of the rides don't interest me. I mean, I love Kali, but since it's February, I'm guessing it might be too cold to deal with it.

I'm debating whether or not I can even handle Everest. I want to do it because I like the idea of Disney coasters, but then I know I don't like Space Mountain so who knows if I can handle something rougher! I just want to be able to see inside the ride. Is the final drop on Everest much worse than that on Splash Mountain?

I would LOVE to try the jalapeno cheese stuffed pretzel except for the fact that Howard and I are both lactose intolerant! AGH! It's cream cheese, isn't it (or am I thinking about the other pretzel at MK)? If it is, we can't eat it. If it's another cheese, I can eat it maybe.

Those pics of Flame Tree do NOT look like counter service meals. Sometimes they make me drool just looking at my monitor! Ooo, Yak and Yeti! That's a possibility too!

Umm, YES, I think you should definitely do the Animal Kingdom!!! I can't believe you've only been there once! I love it there. :goodvibes I love Dinosaur, the safari, Everest, FOTLK and just soaking in the atmosphere. The theming is great.

As far as Expedition Everest goes, I don't think it's scary at all. The only part that is a little bit dizzying is the part where you go backwards. It does help that that part is in the dark. But it is fast! The big drop isn't that bad. Great ride. :thumbsup2 Just out of curiosity, what don't you like about Space Mountain? Is it the fact that it's in the dark? Because Everest only has a couple parts where you're in the dark. You know I'm going to say you should try it, but you know your limits. In a way it's like Thunder Mountain on steroids.

Make sure you check out the seating area at Flame Tree BBQ. If you head all the way down to the back you can get a nice water view with Everest! Sometimes people don't realize there are seats all the way down there and you could have a quiet lunch! :goodvibes

I agree with Sarah about EE. I love it but I do love thrill rides. I think the only dizzying part is when you head backwards. Love it!

Lots to look at at AK and at a leisurely pace as well. I think it would be a great park for you to go to!

Yay! You're going to AK, I love that park!!!

I agree with Sarah on EE, the backwards part is what can make you feel a little off, and after that it's just really fast. I actually think the drop is much less intense than Splash because it curves, it's not a straight drop down. I love it, but if I was really worried about getting sick I'd skip it - no sense in ruining the rest of your day for one ride :thumbsup2

As far as my other favorites at AK, I'd say the safari and FOTLK are not to be missed. We also love the exploration trails. Oh, and It's Tough to be a Bug is a fun show, plus you get a chance to really check out the Tree of Life while your in the queue for it.

I think AK sounds perfect-- I agree, I think you guys would be a bit sad knowing the others were enjoying a park (even if it was a park you didn't want to go to!)
Now that the Yeti is off, I don't think EE is "scary" per say. When you go backwards is slightly disorienting, but not too bad. I love coasters, though, so I may not be the best person to ask!

I actaully think that AK has grown on me with every trip we've taken. I can't wait to visit it in Feb. when we won't be dying from heat and sweating our tails off/ Part of the appeal of Dinosaur for me, I think, was the escape from the heat.

Some things I like from AK are FOTLK, the safari, and walking some of the trails. I think there are still so many things we want to explore at AK but the heat always forces us to leave a bit early. I want to try Flame Tree too this trip!

Still bummed that we will be missing each other by days, literally. After reading KK2, I think it would be so creepy to be in that park in that type of scenario!

Haha, I was thinking about you as I typed up that update. Now I think of AK as YOUR park just because I know how much you love it. Howard and I are happy that there are a lot of things at AK that require sitting because by the end of the week, we might be really exhausted!

What exactly happens during the backwards part? It turns or twists while it goes backwards? Is it a kind of dizzying that lasts only as it's happening? The thing I don't like about Space Mountain is the jerkiness. The last time I rode it, I was fine on one side, but then I got a headache after we went on the other side. I just felt like my brain was being rattled. Despite all that, there's still a part of me that really wants to try EE!

Make sure you check out the seating area at Flame Tree BBQ. If you head all the way down to the back you can get a nice water view with Everest! Sometimes people don't realize there are seats all the way down there and you could have a quiet lunch! :goodvibes

Ooo, I have to keep that in mind! I'd like to have a quiet lunch and just relax with fiancé! I think it'll be fun to kind of take it easy as compared to Epcot and MK. I'm sure Howard will be taking many pictures!

Yay! You're going to AK, I love that park!!!

Hmm, I like your comparison of the EE and Splash Mountain drop because the latter is one I know! I'm not THAT big of a fan of the drop. Haha, I just think SM is a fun ride. I wonder if I'll think the same thing about EE. Haha, I should really ask Howard if he'd remotely consider it because if he wouldn't, there's no way I'm getting on it by myself!

I don't want to possibly feel sick though, as you said. That's the real thing that's keeping me away from it at this point. Hmm, I wonder if there are YouTube videos of it. I'm off to search!

I think AK sounds perfect-- I agree, I think you guys would be a bit sad knowing the others were enjoying a park (even if it was a park you didn't want to go to!)

Exactly! I started thinking about how they would still have a park to look forward to, and we'd be done by the time Wednesday came around. It's the perfect opportunity for us since AK closes earlier than the other parks, so we'd be able to be done way before they're done. Since we went to DHS in April by ourselves, we're looking forward to seeing this park at our own pace. I especially like that it'll be in February because I always read about just how hot it is in the summer months!

I actaully think that AK has grown on me with every trip we've taken. I can't wait to visit it in Feb. when we won't be dying from heat and sweating our tails off/ Part of the appeal of Dinosaur for me, I think, was the escape from the heat.

I'm going to have to reread KK2 and the Hidden Magic book before we go! There are a ton of things that I don't know about the park. I do remember from my childhood that I had an issue regarding the layout of the park. I didn't like that we had to keep walking back to the center to go to another land. I'll have to have Howard examine the map so that he'll have a better sense of direction! I'm terrible with that!

I'm bummed too! It really would've been such a nice DIS meet. Haha, no worries about being crazy sweaty or anything like that! One day, I'm sure it'll happen! Haha, maybe when DD is in school and you have to follow the school schedule, it'll be easier to have vacations during the same week!

Expedition Everest Questions

Expedition_Everest_at_Disneys_Animal_Kingdom.jpg

I asked Howard if he would consider riding Expedition Everest, and this is the conversation that followed:

Rachel: Would you even consider riding on EE?
Howard: Expedition Everest? Hmmm ... I'm gonna watch it on YouTube.
Rachel: Haha, I'm doing that RIGHT NOW.
Howard: Haha, it's like we're riding it already! I'd say yes ... no big sudden drops so i'm good.

First of all, no, we don't speak properly when we're chatting online. I just edited it so that it was more readable. Secondly, he's willing to try it! Oh dear. That actually got me a little nervous! Of course, I wanted him to say yes because I'd like to have the choice to do so, however, it's still nerve-wracking!

So for those of you who have been on EE many times and know it like the back of your hand, can you describe it to us? I've watched many different versions of the ride, and some are scarier than others. Haha, I admit it has a lot to do with how loud the people are screaming!

Basically, this is what I know about the ride and how it progresses:

1. After loading, the ride is pretty smooth as it seems to travel through the middle of nowhere along this scenic route.

2. It ascends up the first hill and through a somewhat LOUD "tunnel/building." I can already see myself covering my ears if I do decide to ride it. When it reaches the top, it starts going down a tiny bit to pick up speed as it then ascends a bit more until it reaches the broken track.

3. The ride just stops. This is where I'd be panicking. Haha.

4. It then goes backwards, and of course, it's near impossible to see anything in the videos because it's in the dark. What exactly happens here? I just hear screaming, and it seems to last for a rather long time! Are you just going backwards and twisting left and right? Is it a really steep hill? Is it just the darkness and the unknown that makes it scary?

5. The ride pauses again where the people watch the projected (?) yeti rip the tracks out. Then it goes forward and over a slight hill before it goes down the 80 foot drop. I read that you can feel G-forces at the bottom of the hill. Is that true? Does it bother you? Does it last for a long time?

6. The ride continues through the mountain and into darkness once again. What happens here? Are there more drops inside the mountain? I know the one that's visible is the biggest one, but is the inside scary? I know that that's where the animatronic yeti is, but I've read that it rarely functions the way it's supposed to. When it does function properly, what is it supposed to do? Swing down at you?

7. The ride goes through the final room, and the people are back out in the open waiting to get off the ride.

Haha, is that somewhat of a correct summary of the ride? Any and all help or comments would be appreciated! I'm the kind of person who really enjoys knowing what to expect. All the rides I go on are rides t hat I've been on before! I guess I'm feeling a bit too old to just try something for the first time. I don't want to feel dizzy, but I also do not want to miss out on a fun experience! Thanks guys!

LOL, I'd say that's a pretty good summary of what happens. You said the thing you don't like about Space Mountain is the jerkiness. That's really not an issue on EE...it is a MUCH smoother ride, but a lot faster! I'll add a few comments to what you've already said: (I had to watch a youtube video myself to remember a little bit more, haha!).

Basically, this is what I know about the ride and how it progresses:

1. After loading, the ride is pretty smooth as it seems to travel through the middle of nowhere along this scenic route.

Yeah, you pretty much start off pulling out of the loading area, round a couple bends and head up the first incline where you get that awesome view of the park. LOVE IT!!!!!

2. It ascends up the first hill and through a somewhat LOUD "tunnel/building." I can already see myself covering my ears if I do decide to ride it. When it reaches the top, it starts going down a tiny bit to pick up speed as it then ascends a bit more until it reaches the broken track.

Honestly I think Thunder Mountain is louder.

3. The ride just stops. This is where I'd be panicking. Haha.

No real comments here, but this is where Dad and I always imagine Stacey saying "that's strange...there doesn't seem to be any track." :rotfl:

Yeah, it's pretty much just twists and turns and stuff. If I'm remember right, some of the backwards is almost like you are going UP backwards. The screaming is what makes it fun. hehe

5. The ride pauses again where the people watch the projected (?) yeti rip the tracks out. Then it goes forward and over a slight hill before it goes down the 80 foot drop. I read that you can feel G-forces at the bottom of the hill. Is that true? Does it bother you? Does it last for a long time?

Yup you stop for a bit while the track switches again. This is also close to the point where they take the ride picture. Hmm, I don't know if I've ever actually felt the G-Forces. Maybe I have but it doesn't really bother me. :confused3

I don't think there are any more major drops in the mountain. The banks are kind of steep though. And yeah, the Yeti does kind of swing down at you. I can't remember the last time it was working.

7. The ride goes through the final room, and the people are back out in the open waiting to get off the ride.

This is the point where we usually say that was awesome and want to ride it again. haha

OK, after watching that video now I really want to go ride it for real. If you really want, maybe I should just come with you and accompany you guys on EE. :thumbsup2

You're too funny! Yeah, I'd say you have it about right! My comments are in red below.

Basically, this is what I know about the ride and how it progresses:

1. After loading, the ride is pretty smooth as it seems to travel through the middle of nowhere along this scenic route.

Yep, doesn't go real fast or anything, you just kind of ride along until you get to the big incline.

2. It ascends up the first hill and through a somewhat LOUD "tunnel/building." I can already see myself covering my ears if I do decide to ride it. When it reaches the top, it starts going down a tiny bit to pick up speed as it then ascends a bit more until it reaches the broken track.

I really don't remember the tunnel/building being loud :confused3 I'm pretty sure you go on a few fast turns around the mountain before you lift again to the broken track, I could be remembering wrong though - since you just watched videos of it you probably know better than I do

3. The ride just stops. This is where I'd be panicking. Haha.

Yep, it just stops! Oh no, what are we going to do???!!!

It goes backwards pretty fast and it does kind of twist, I swore the first time I rode it it felt like I went upside down! I know I didn't, but it still felt that way. I know now that the further you are in the back of the train, the more you have that feeling - so if you want to limit that, wait for a seat in the front.

5. The ride pauses again where the people watch the projected (?) yeti rip the tracks out. Then it goes forward and over a slight hill before it goes down the 80 foot drop. I read that you can feel G-forces at the bottom of the hill. Is that true? Does it bother you? Does it last for a long time?

I don't think I've ever really felt the G-forces on the drop - I scream like crazy as soon as we top that hill and that seems to help

No more drops, just some steep fast turns. It's rare now to even see the big Yeti, it's broken so it no longer swipes at you like it did when the ride first opened. Sometimes they have a strobe light on it and you can see it, other times I don't notice it at all. It's too bad too, because it's really cool - scared the crap out of me the first time I rode and it tried to take my head off though

7. The ride goes through the final room, and the people are back out in the open waiting to get off the ride.

Yep, this is where the kids say: "can we ride again?!"

Yay for adding AK - I think it's a great idea. It'll get you more excited and in the mood for your honeymoon stay at AKL :cutie:

On the EE topic, I just wanted to add, that I HATE space mountain. When I leave I have to check to make sure my spine hasn't detatched and my legs still work. EE is nothing like that - it's a much smoother ride - more along the lines of Big Thunder, but less jerky and more exciting. If you hate SM, stay away from primeval whirl (it's the same type of motions that SM is)

You know how I feel about AK. I may have mentioned a time or two that it's my favorite

Ride wise, we always hit up Dinosaur and EE. Both are in my top 5 favorite Disney rides. The Safari and It's Tough to be a bug are every-other for us, but they're still fun. We like just slowly walking through and soaking in the atmosphere. It's so pretty.

Yay, I'm glad you decided to add AK to your parks! You're going to have fun.

I remember watching this video like 15 times for my trip back in '07, I was so excited to ride EE and I couldn't stop watching YouTube videos of it. It's my favorite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Luy85Gkrjz0

I felt G-forces in the turns after the drop (which isn't bad at all even though it's an 80 foot one). Like every one esle said, EE is such a smooth ride, I think you'll like it! :)

Okay first off let's tackle EE. I don't like the ride anymore because it makes me very motion sick. It's because the ride goes backwards and that makes me sick. I think there is only that one big drop and that's pretty much it as far as drops go. I like the ride, but I just can't ride it anymore because I get so sick. I've ridden it maybe 4 times, but I think I'm done with it. It is a fun ride though!

I la la love the Tusker House! It has the best food EVER! I was so impressed with it! They also feature African music all day there.

I loved the train ride that takes you to Rafiki's Planet Watch.

I love love loved the Lion King Show. I loved Dinosaur, it's really not that scary it's pretty much Indiana Jones but without the boulder and a giant T-Rex. I mean it's a little bit scary when he jumps out at you, but yeah not too bad. I personally like Indy better. :P Even though it's the same track. That Dinosaur whirl ride or whatever is really fun too! I hear Nemo is a good show but I was not about to battle with 5 years in a line, so we skipped it.
