Save the Adventurers Club

Ah, I never shall tire of Right Guard's devotion to the club! Just up this morning on the "Save the Adventurers Club" Facebook group:

TheGrinchWhoStoleTheAdventurersClub.jpg

"Then the Exec thought of something he hadn't before. The Adventurers Club, he thought, can't be replaced by a store! For the Adventurers Club, means oh so much more!"

Dear Adventurers,

Just because the props and signage has been removed from our beloved Adventurers Club, does not mean it is time to give up. On the contrary, this is the time that will prove our resolve more than ever. We know that the building is not going to be demolished (1. The most recent permits show nothing about demolition, and 2. Disney wouldn't spend the money to have the sign paved over if the building was coming down) therefore, we can not let Disney forget that we are still here and we will continue sining the song of Adventurers, louder and louder until we attend the next Hoopla in 5189 Hill St.! Please, start writing letters, e-mail, and call the phone numbers of everyone that has been listed on the list of names [provided below]. We will not let our Club go gentle into that good night, it shall rise again!

Kungaloosh!

As usual, he is quite right. This is not the time to sit by and let things happen without letting our voices be heard! So, here once again is the contact list of Disney Executives.

Kungaloosh Adventurers,

Well certainly the place to be last weekend was at the celebration of all things Adventurers Club, ConGaloosh 2011! Friday started with meeting up at the Holiday Inn on 535 for updating everyone’s tales of adventures and an Adventurer’s second favorite pastime, Adult Beverages!

If anyone wonders if Disney is watching these boards, let Friday night’s events be the confirmation. Our intrepid group set a course for Merriweather’s Island for a group picture on the hallowed steps of our beloved Adventurers Club. We were greeted by the Pleasure Island Map’s Guest Relations cast member with a hearty, “Kungaloosh and welcome to Pleasure Island!”. As we approached the Club we saw 4 Disney Managers and 5 security guards (one of whom was heard saying "7:30...they're right on time") standing directly across from the Club. Thankfully, they seemed to just be there to make sure things didn’t get out of hand, for the picture was taken, a Club Salute was given and we continued onward towards Raglan Road singing “The Adventurers Club All Purpose Theme Song” without incident!

AdventurersontheStairsFull.jpg

We spent some time in the Irish Pub singing old Club standards such as “The Beer Song”, “Those Were The Days”, etc. Then we headed for the cars and journeyed onward to The Swan for some Karaoke at Kimonos.

Kimonos.jpg

After a couple of songs and sushi, our Emcee for the weekend, Robert Croskery, called up our fellows dressed as Hathaway and Samantha to lead the restaurant in a recitation of the Club Creed. Then once again we were on the road and on to Dixie Landings (or Port Orleans Riverside, your pick) to visit Yahoo Bob in the River Roost Lounge. We sang along to such Adventurers Club favorites as “That’s Amore” and “When the Saints Go Marching In”, and posed with Bob for the last group shot of the night.

RiverRoostwithYahooBob.jpg

Then all good Adventurers, returned to their cots to physically and mentally prepare themselves for the next day’s quest!

All that ConGaloosh.org told us of Ian Quest 2011 was “Come and test your wits and adventuring skills against the perils of Adventureland! Will you emerge victorious?” Little did we know that our good friend “Right Guard” Ian sent a message to Col. Wayne P. McSwagger, requesting a special “Adventureland Challenge” for us. The “Challenge” was a daily occurrence in Adventureland between 1995 – 2000, but surfaced once again in 2009 for the Jungle Cruise Skipper’s Reunion. Col. McSwagger had stolen the Mystic Golden Idol of Adventureland. He who controls the Idol, controls Adventureland and the only way McSwagger would give up the Idol was if someone could beat him in a game of his choosing. Usually the Col. Would bring along a fallen Skipper who had become his Lackey, but for us he brought along his partner in crime, Baroness Eugenia Nefertiti Von Swoon

TheColonelTheBaroness.jpg

to help give out special maps of Adventureland and to keep us somewhat on track.

CongalooshMap.jpg

On the back of the map was a clue that lead us to gift shops in Adventureland, and in the shops we received yet more clues.

CongalooshClues.jpg

After all 8 clues were collected, we fliped over all of them to find one last clue written in an ancient “Forbidden” text,

FinalClue.jpg

Translation: For those of you who are reckless, brave and loyal,
the Balderdash Cup may be the prize for your toil.
To end this Idol tale that could help you compete,
look all 'round the port where Jungle Rivers meet.

but thankfully McSwagger provided us with his personal, “Swagger Stone” for translation.

SwaggerStone.jpg

We then ran to the hiding place to search through bushes and other various scenery. When the Idol was recovered we were all horrified to find that no one had followed all the clues to the letter, for we were also supposed to tell McSwagger where Otis T. Wren had placed an “X” on a map and what the times of the tide were for the day (according to Dreamy Ka’imi). So, in the end McSwagger won the game, but everyone loved the thrill of the hunt. Also, the Colonel has vowed to play again next year and we will all be ready to carefully read his instructions!

(For more information on the Adventureland Challenge please watch this video of the 2009 Skipper Reunion’s game, http://newmexicast.com/nm0034)

Then at 6 P.M. we gathered back at the Holiday Inn's "Discovery Room" for the main event.

TheDiscoveryRoom.jpg

Robert started us off with bringing up this years President of the ConGaloosh Society, Bernard Deschanes and Hathaway Browne (a.k.a. “Right Guard” Ian)

CandiHeartHathawayBrowne.jpg

to start us off with a New Member Induction Ceremony, while our own personal Fingers provided accompaniment.

Fingers.jpg

Then, from the back of the room stumbled in Fletcher Hodges long, lost Irish Brother, Lecher O’Hodges to sing us his rendition of “The Thing”.

LecherOHodges.jpg

It was then time for the Costume contest, presided over by Adventurers Club Permanent Members, Green and Simple

GrahamGlenn03.jpg

who voted the Best in Show to Emil Bleehall and Bessie the Heifer!

BessieEmil.jpg

Then it was onto the Balderdash Cup competition, where we heard tales of attempts to liberate Scooter the Peacock from “D Street” to fixing airplanes with rubber bands. But this years winner was Liesl Schindler, with an oddly familiar tale of finding the lost continent of Atlantis while flying relief supplies to the victims of a cataclysmic earthquake in Krakatau, with well placed jabs from Prof. Otis T. Wren (a.k.a. “Right Guard” Ian).

OtisTWrenOsaJohnson.jpg

The night continued with a performance of the “Sheik of Araby” from Green and Simple, more songs and tales and visits from Adventurers Club Permanent Member, Lancelot and the well known door host Kirk as well as another Emil Bleehall (a.k.a. “Right Guard” Ian).

KirkEmilBleehall.jpg

Then we wrapped up yet another weekend of adventure with one last rendition of “The Adventurers Club All Purpose Theme Song”.

At the end of the day, the Adventurers Club is far from dead. It is alive and well in all of us, and we must continue to let Disney know that they will not hear the end of their egregious error of closing the greatest example of immersive entertainment that has ever existed, until they reopen it. Please Adventurers, continue writing letters and emails and one day we will all be able to enjoy a night of Adventure back inside of our beloved Club on the top of Hill St.

P.S. I had to include a picture of the back of “Right Guard’s” Emil sash. When asked how he put this one together he said, “Well, in the spirit of the old Bleehall tradition, my Mom made it!”

So, I was perusing a ton of old Disney News Magazines this weekend, and came upon some very interesting articles on the once proud Pleasure Island:

Disney News- Summer 1991
Page01-2.jpg

Disney News: Winter 1986
PleasureIslandPreviewDisneyNews-Win.jpg

These are terrific! I had no idea Basil and Rattigan were even ever considered as costumed characters! And the Rocketeer! Haha, this is great stuff!

"According to my friend who works for Disney they are considering adding the Adventurer's Club to the new Nightly Kingdom concept. To compete with Seaworld's highly successful high end Discovery Cove, Disney will offer an after hours park for quests willing to pay $200 plus . According to my friend, guests would check in at the new Adventure's Club before embarking on their paid adventure."

Ah, the long-rumored Night Kingdom. I'll believe in Night Kingdom when I am actually hand-feeding a hippo (which is, incidentally, the point in the article where I say, "get out.")

I just thought I should post this link here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VRFDbaEsd4

Someone recreated the whole place in video game version.

I've never spent a lot of time in the club itself but I think this is absofreakinglutely amazing....

Whoever did this really LOVE the place.
Enjoy!

That's amazing! Everyone should watch this as the attention to detail is mind-blowing.

No part of the shows in the Adventurers' Club and the Comedy Warehouse involve a view of the outside. Therefore either could be resurrected in a different location.

Alright, I'm quoting this one last because of an idea for a reincarnated Adventurer's Club that somebody kicked around on another message board and which I love:

Replace Restaurantosaurus (ugh) in Dinoland USA (ugh, ugh) with a new version of the Adventurer's Club. Make the decor and themeing more based upon the Cope and Marsh Bone Wars but keep the Kungaloosh. And very definitely involve Waterhouse Hawkins' unusual dining room (small illustration):

Peterson First Guides: Dinosaurs p. 73 by Babbletrish, on Flickr

Thoughts? Personally, I love it because I tragically never got a chance to visit the AC. :guilty:

Kungaloosh Adventurers,

I know that I sent my letter off to the Great Pumpkin weeks ago asking for the Adventurers Club to reopen. We shall see if I've picked out the most sincere pumpkin patch in PA to wait for him this year. In the meantime, every year I look forward to recieveing "Right Guard's" Halloween and Christmas cards, and this year he did not dissapoint for the more spirited holiday!

AnAdventurousHalloween.jpg

We here at the Adventurers Club would like to wish you all an Adventurous Halloween and share with you a song that Prof. Wren found while researching this ghoulish time of year. It appears (or at least Otis claims) that most holiday carols that we all know and love, were actually Halloween Carols that were stolen from Halloween! Among his “discoveries” comes this little gem. This song dates beck to the ancient Celts, circa pre Stonehenge, when apparently Halloween was celebrated for a dozen ghoulish nights (that's a lot of candy). This longer holiday period was an early druid marketing ploy and when it failed this wonderful song was up for grabs to any other fly by night holiday that happened to come along. And now for the quintessential Halloween song:
__________________________________________________________

The 12 Nights of Halloween

On the first night of Halloween,
a vampire gave to me:
a thirst for blood & immortality (Slurp, Ahh).

On the second night of Halloween,
a vampire gave to me:
2 puncture wounds (Aah!),
and a thirst for blood & immortality (Slurp, Ahh).

On the third night of Halloween,
a vampire gave to me:
3 Frenchmen's heads (Un, deux, trois!),
2 puncture wounds (Aah!),
and a thirst for blood & immortality. (Slurp, Ahh)

On the fourth night of Halloween,
a vampire gave to me:
Four oozing sores (Ah, Aah, Aaah, Aaaah!!!),
3 Frenchmen's heads (Un, deux, trois!),
2 puncture wounds (Aah!),
and a thirst for blood & immortality (Slurp. . .Ahh).

On the Fifth night of Halloween,
a vampire gave to me:
Maggots... In... My... Eyes!!! (Maggots! In my eyes!!! Aaaah!!! Aaaah).
__________________________________________________________

Unfortunately the rest of this Halloween Carol has been lost since Pamelia would not let us finish, and burned our only copy of the song. Oh well.

Happy Halloween and Kungaloosh,
Hathaway Browne, Emil Bleehall and Prof. Otis T. Wren

Also, he sent me a link to what appears to be The Pleasure Island Philharmonic back from the dead! Well, their percussion seciont anyway. Zom-Beat which has been exhumed for this Halloween season has much of the humorous styling and concert location of he great Pleasure Island Philharmonic! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeKIr6AmLkI, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNJ5Z2dGlXM

Here's to hoping that the Great Pumpkin will fly out of this pumpkin patch and reopen those hallowed doors this hallowed evening! If not, there's always time to write to that fat guy in a red suit and the white beard who goes, "Ho, ho, ho!"!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Posted today over at the Save the Adventurers Club Facebook group:

Congratulations to Joe Rohde for winning the Themed Entertainment Association, Buzz Price Thea Award in recognition for a lifetime of distinguished achievements! Be sure to drop by the Disney Parks blog and leave him a congratulatory message thanking him for his superb job of the Adventurers Club, considering Disney conveniently left that out of their post.

Looks like a new mailing campaign is in the works over at the "Save the Adventurers Club" Facebook group. Check this out:

Kungaloosh Adventurers,

So this past weekend as I was unpacking my adventurous Christmas decorations, I was listening to the MousePlanet Podcast from Thursday, October 2, 2008 “Kungaloosh! A Tribute to the Adventurers Club (with Bonus Audio track: An interview with Karl Anthony, Tim Goodwin and Andrea Canny!)”. (For those who wish to listen to this podcast please go here http://www.mouseplanet.com/8545/Kungaloosh_A_Tribute_to_the_Adventurers_Club_with_Bonus_Audio_track). As the Podcast reached the point where Karl begins to talk about how the best course of action to get our Club back is to not give up and that the Executives need to be receiving handwritten letters weeks, months and even years after the closing to let them know how much the Club is missed, I came upon a long forgotten piece of Pleasure Island history. Ladies and Gentleman, I found a Pleasure Island Guest Survey from the early ‘90s!

Almost immediately a vision of the top Disney brass receiving hundreds, if not thousands of vintage Pleasure Island surveys popped into my head and I rushed to my scanner to begin working on a clean and easy to print out document to share with the Save the Adventurers Club and Save Pleasure Island communities to once again let Disney know what we truly want on the shores of Lake Buena Vista!

PleasuerIslandSurvey-YouveGotAPoint.jpg
(Please download the cleaned up PDF at http://www.mediafire.com/?9vb2vy0zsk6w9kz)

Please Adventurers, take a few minutes to apply this latest tool that Disney so kindly (and inadvertently) provided to us! For a more authentic feel, you may want to print on cardstock, but normal paper is fine as well. Also, if you find that you have run out of room in the comment section, feel free to continue on a seperate sheet of paper. While I am open to suggestions as to whom should be recieving these my suggestions are a core group of five:

Mr. Robert Iger
Chief Executive Officer
The Walt Disney Company
500 South Buena Vista Street
Burbank, CA 91521-4873

Thomas O. Staggs
Chairman
Walt Disney Parks & Resorts
C/O Team Disney Building
500 South Buena Vista St.
Burbank, CA 91521

John Lasseter
Chief Creative Officer
Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios
Pixar Animation Studios
1200 Park Avenue
Emeryville, CA 94608

Meg Crofton
President
President of Operations- US & France
PO Box 10040
Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830

Keith Bradford
VP Downtown Disney
Walt Disney World Company
P.O. Box 10000
Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830

I'm sure that why most of these names are on this list are self explanitory, but you may ask why John Lasseter. Well, 1. He was a jungle Cruise Skipper, so the man has a sense of humor and 2. He was reported to have been a huge Adventurers Club fan, and rumored to have offered to buy it from Disney to keep it open, but Disney refused, so he is at least one person that should be on our side. Well Adventurers, there is the new campaign I propose. We haven’t had a swell of mail filling the Disney executive boxes for about a year so now is the time to act again. The battle for Pleasure Island is far lost and may a handout from the past redirect it’s future!

So it looks like at one time there actually were surveys about the Island, and I'm sure these yielded an acurate assesment of how the public enjoyed Pleasure Island as opposed to the numbers that Disney made up saying that we wanted shopping and dining. Well, I know I'll be sending in this more accurate survey, how about you?

So, apparently last night Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular stage at M.G.M Studios was host to the Cast Member Service Award Banquet. and the Adventurers were on hand to perform! Here are the first pictures that have made their way to the "Save the Adventurers Club" Facbook Group. From the looks of the pictures, they had a Holiday Broadcast, since Beulah Belle has the mistletoe stick and Emil is wearing his Santa hat. Boy, I hope this means that New Years Eve midnight announcement is truely Adventurous!

I was soooo excited to see those pictures in the FB group last night! When I first heard about the NYE announcement, my first thought went to the AC BUT after hearing more about it, I really doubt that's what the big announcement will be. They are planning on making the announcement on Dick Clark's NYE show. Most people who watch that have no idea what the AC is, nor do they care so I don't think that's they would choose that as the platform for such an announcement. I'm not saying they WON'T bring it back. I have been hopeful they will for some time, but I just don't think it will during THAT particular announcement.

Kungaloosh Adventurers,

Well, today we have two Disney Park Blogs to post on! Number one, let us all go and congratulate the Disney Beverage Program for receiving Cheers Magazine’s 2012 “Cheers Beverage Excellence Awards” and also the 2012 VIBE VISTA Award for “Best Wine Program”. Let's all post them a message and tell them how much we enjoy their "Kungaloosh", "Hoopla", "Gypsy Moth", "Funmeister", etc. A short list of your favorites may be found here: http://advclub.wikia.com/wiki/Signature_drinks

Two, now that the Comedy Warehouse shows at M.G.M. Studios have been announced please go and plug the Adventurers Club like crazy especially sine the blog post that states that this show is "including alumni from the Comedy Warehouse on Pleasure Island"!

Kungaloosh Adventurers,

Well, here we are, another Christmas Eve and yet another year that I wish that we could all gather in in the Main Salon at midnight to hear our favorite people recite "Twas the Night Before Christmas". Well, once again to simulate the experience, here is the only other YouTube recording that I have ever seen of this very event! So, prepaire your favorite beverage, be it egg nog, wassail or a frost Kungaloosh, press play, and let us all dream and wish that next year at this time that we will all be in the Main Salon together again, one big, adventurous family.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnFb9crSKg8

Merry Christmas and Kungaloosh!

P.S. Shooting off a few more letters and some of those Pleasure Island surveys to the Executives couldn't hurt either!

Kungaloosh Adventurers,

So the Disney Parks Blog has once again provided us with a great pictoral reminder of what we are still fighting to bring back.

I just want to remind everyone that the return of our Club, as long as we all continue remind Disney that there is the demand, is still a very real possibility. Please follow this link to the Disney Park Blog and leave a comment on how badly Pleasure Island's nightlife is missed (particularly our beloved Adventurers Club). Allso, please take some time to shoot off a couple of those PI Surveys to the Executives. With any luck, at this time in 2012, we will all be back in the Main Salon welcoming in 1937 once again!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I must say that last night I had quite a memorable President's Day, having the pleasure of seeing my good friend "Right Guard" in the Walt Disney World Cast Member Drama Club (STAGE)'s production of "Arsenic and Old Lace". He is playing Teddy Brewster, who beleive himself to be the great Adventurers Club Member and 26th President of the Unitied States, Teddy Roosevelt. One of "Right Guard's" many costumes proudly sported an original Club Membership Pin, a Club Canteen and in addition to his many "Bullys"! gave the audience a couple of hearty Kungalooshes! The show plays for two more nights at the Contemporary Resort's, Ballroom of the Americas.

TeddyHeadshot.jpg

"Right Guard" as Teddy Brewster at the Adventurers Club

After watching "Right Guard" charge up the staricase, believing it to be San Juan Hill, for the umteenth time, I remembered an article from the Adventurers Club Newsletter, The Adventurers Almanac, about a tradition that our great Club has in honor of the man who spoke soflty but carried a big stick.

Adventurers Almanac: Volume 54 Issue No. 1,
The Teddy Toast

FROM THE DESK OF GRAVES

Greetings, fellow Adventurers!

In future issues, as part of my duties as Club butler, I will be discussing the etiquette involved in many of the Adventurers Club functions (Manure Diving Competition, Gator Grappling Olympics, etc.), however, it has come to my attention that many of the present membership, particularly the newer members, are avoiding, if not totally ignoring, one of our most time honored traditions, the "Teddy Toast." As the ritual indicates, upon returning to the Club after a hard day of adventuring, one should move as speedily as possible to the nearest bar or watering hole and purchase the beverage of one's choice. Moving without delay, one should wend one's way back up to the "Founders' Corner" and stand before the portrait of Teddy Roosevelt, the ultimate adventurer. You are to raise your untouched drink high to the heavens, shout "Charge!" at the top of your lungs, and drain your glass completely.

This tradition dates back to the time Bart Biffbay was stopped in that particular spot by Nashy. Nash inquired how "Bilge-Water Bart" planned to settle his extremely large and extremely delinquent bar tab. Bart replied he would charge it, to which a rather angry and redfaced Nash screamed, "Charge!?!?" "Exactly!," said Bart, downing a gin and tonic, after which Nash downed Bart. In these simple times, we need to be true to our simple traditions.

Yours ever loyally — Graves

FoundersCorner.jpg

Adventurers Club, Zebra Mezzanine: The Founders Corner

This is truly a grand tradition that I plan to uphold and hopefully reinstate when we finaly are let back in to that hallowed Earthbound Treehouse on top of Hill St.! I believe that my beverage of choice will be a Gypsy Moth. What will yours be?

Some days you eat the mouse.
Some days the mouse eats you.
But the Club still stands and hope remains!
KUNGALOOSH!

Kungaloosh Adventureres! Recently I was fortunate enough to chat with an a person who may or may not be in connection with WED who told me that there are to be no further demolitions at Pleasure Island and to keep putting the pressure on Disney about how much the Adventurers Club is loved, missed and how badly it is wanted to make a return/ So, I though it would be a good idea to once again post the "Pleasure Island Guest Survey" I put up a few months ago.

As Lee mentioned over on the WDWMagic Forums, in the "Plan C for Pleasure Island" thread:

I can tell you that the stream of complaints into TDO and Burbank since the closing of PI in general, and the AC in particular, has been nothing short of extraordinary. Far greater than for any other closure in company history.

I have been told by certain people that it has become a sore spot within the organization, and that there has been a significant amount of push-back from within to try to undo the mistakes made with the closing of PI. Thus far, those efforts have been stymied by certain individuals who refuse to acknowledge that any mistakes were made and are prevented by ego from ever admitting that they were wrong and trying to make it right."

Adventurers, let us lend our support to those who wish to undo their mistakes and help their voices be heard by once again taking up pen and sending in those letters to let the Execs know that the song of Adventure will not be silcenced and our Club must be reopened! And for those who would like their letters to have an even more official look, may I suggest picking up a packet of parchment and affixing the Official Adventurers Club Letterhead to the upper left corner of your message.

AdventurersLetterhead.jpg

And once again, while I would say message as many Disney offices as you can, here are a core group of five individuals who must be included:

Mr. Robert Iger
Chief Executive Officer
The Walt Disney Company
500 South Buena Vista Street
Burbank, CA 91521-4873

Thomas O. Staggs
Chairman
Walt Disney Parks & Resorts
C/O Team Disney Building
500 South Buena Vista St.
Burbank, CA 91521

John Lasseter
Chief Creative Officer
Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios
Pixar Animation Studios
1200 Park Avenue
Emeryville, CA 94608

Meg Crofton
President
President of Operations- US & France
PO Box 10040
Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830

Keith Bradford
VP Downtown Disney
Walt Disney World Company
P.O. Box 10000

This battle is far from over Adventurers, and support for the Club's return must outweigh those "who refuse to acknowledge that any mistakes were made and are prevented by ego from ever admitting that they were wrong and trying to make it right"!

As a proud holder of an Adventurer's club pin and pen, presented to me by Sugar herself in Oct 2004 I will add my voice to those calling for the reopening of the Adventurers club. They put the Enchanted Tiki Room back to rights, maybe we can get them to follow suit with the AC.

From the save the Adventurers Club Facebook page:

Kungaloosh Adventurers,

With the Wearin' o' the Green upon us, Disney Parks Blog is advertising that on should spend their St. Patty's Day at Downtown Disney and that their celebration is centered around Pleasure Island and Raglan Road. I think it has been too long since we have had a post on the Disney Parks blog that had anything to do with PI, so let us leave many comments on how we would truely like to spend this Holiday, watching Hathaway Browne tell his death-defying tales while wearing his Official Green Club Jacket! Perhaps watching Emil call upon his pigeons in his Green Jr. Adventurer's Outfit. The list goes on and on, so please choose your favorite scenario and tell Disney!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
