Savannah, GA and/or Charleston, SC

We are going to be taking a week this coming year and split it between these 2 cities. In preparation, I'm looking for must-do suggestions of things to do/places to eat in both locations, as viewed by locals/people w/experience in the area. We're still debating between hoteling/RVing, but any and all suggestions would be welcome.

We went to both last summer. We were staying at Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort and spent a day in each city. We took a ghost tour in Savannah, which was a lot of fun. Definitely don't miss River Street! We ate at the Pirate House, part of which is the (supposedly) oldest building in Georgia. They give tours that cover all the folklore.

In Charleston, we took the ferry to Ft. Sumter. It was really interesting. It's a beautiful city!

In Savannah, we love to eat at the Old Pink House - both in the main dining room and the bar downstairs. We had one of the best experiences ever for our anniversary in the main dining room and loved the charm and decor downstairs.

we spent a few days at hilton head island a couple of months ago, and took day trips to charleston and savannah. we took a horse-drawn tour of charleston, which you catch down by the market, and it was very informative, i enjoyed it a lot. we also took the oglethorpe tour in savannah, and it gave a lot of city info and showed a lot of sights as well. the good thing about the oglethorpe tour was, once the initial tour was over, you could hop on and off the tour trolleys all day at designated stops throughout the city. we took a tour of the mercer williams museum house (sight of the murder chronicled in "midnight in the garden of good and evil") and it was very interesting-the house was much smaller than i imagined inside, although on the outside, it takes up an entire block. we also ate at lady & sons (paula deen's restaurant) and the food was pretty good. yummy southern cookin'. my dbil (who is from egypt) had his first hoecake there-he didn't even know what a hoecake was, lol.

We particularly like the latter, prefering to see things as locals might. Things like markets/shopping districts/restaurants that aren't in a lot of the guidebooks and such.

my dbil (who is from egypt) had his first hoecake there-he didn't even know what a hoecake was, lol.

Uh, l'm with your BIL...we've only lived in the south for 3 years and have never heard of or had a hoecake.

Charleston.........walking tour of the city (with a guide or self guided), boat trip to Fort Sumter (includes tour of the harbor along the Battery), ghost tour, museum houses (Aiken Rhett, Russell House), plantation tours.

Restaurants: Jestine's Kitchen, Fleet Landing (great seafood + other food), Hominy Grill, Carolina's.

Not sure about RV accommodations, but there are a lot of bed and breakfast inns in the city and plenty of hotels in and near the city (stay away from the airport area).

Uh, l'm with your BIL...we've only lived in the south for 3 years and have never heard of or had a hoecake.

lol, i'm not surprised-hoecakes aren't very common anymore. it looks like a pancake, but smaller, and made from corn-it's like a cornmeal pancake.

I love Savannah and have visited twice. It's such a beautiful, charming little city. One of my favorite places is Moon River Brewery. What a great place for a burger and a beer (and a bit spooky, if you're a ghost fan).

We tried Lady & Sons on our first visit. While I'm glad to have tried it, we won't be back. The food was good, but the atmostphere was anything but. It was like a cattle call. Herd them in, pack 'em in tight, rush them out. We were seated on the 3rd floor and the tables were so close that I could barely get up from my seat without pressing my chair against the person seated behind me. They've definitely accepted their place as a tourist attraction and have none of the Savannah charm.

The shops on River Street are definitely lots of fun it you like window shopping and strolling from store to store. Lots of really cute things and a great little art store (can't remember the name) up a flight of stairs. Awesome fudge in the shops as well!

We're all about the spooky, ghost tours and such.

I was worried about the popularity of her restaurant, but that is something we may investigate while there.

Well in that case, you may have seen the Moon River Brewery on an episode of Ghost Adventures or Ghost Hunters. Both have done episodes there and both have had some really cool stuff caught on camera. The restaurant lets patrons wander down to the basement on their own (unless its being used for a private event). I've been down there twice. I didn't encounter anything, but I was still scared to death!
