You'll find a few of us on these boards that have traveled to WDW via Sanford Airport. I actually prefer it to MCO. However, Sanford is about a 50 minute drive to WDW whereas MCO is only 20 minutes.
The pros of traveling to Sanford, IMHO, are:
1) Smaller airport/less congested/friendly staff
2) For me, direct non-stop flights to Orlando are important. For me, the only airline that flies direct, nonstop is Southeast. If I want to travel on another airline for the same type of flight, then I fly from Philly. I'd rather drive the 50 minutes to Sanford then the hour or so to Philly.
The cons, again, IMHO:
1) Transportation is expensive due to its location. Often you'll make out better renting a car than hiring a town car.
2) Some people have had problems reserving a rental car when their flights arrive after the typical hours for the airport (after 5pm). The one time I've arrived there late, years ago, the
Alamo rental desk was open.
It's very easy to travel to WDW from the Sanford Airport. Take route 417 south, pay about $5 total in tolls, and you're at WDW!
