Need suggestions. My husband has the opportunity to take a 6 month contracting position in San Juan. Neither of us have ever been there. We are doing research on cost of living (so we can request the right per diem)

Any info would be great - it would help us decide if we want to pursue this.

Thanks

Cost of living... it's not too bad, especially if you're earning US wages. Rent itself isn't expensive, but utitilies are extremely high, as are food costs (but PR is still the one of the cheapest islands to live in)

Gas is actually cheaper than the mainland.

If you plan on bringing a car with you, make sure your employer pays the import tax (exempt if you're a federal employee with the appropriate paperwork). The tax STARTS at $750 and skyrockets from there.

Measurements are the same as the US, with a few exceptions. Distances are metric (KM, Meters), and fuel is sold in liters.

I grew up in PR, and have been a part time resident for quite some time (fulltime resident of the British Virgin Islands). I am returning fulltime next month. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask :)
