San Diego: What To Do & Where To Eat

I'd think about skipping Seaport Village. We were there several weeks ago and it seemed like it had gone downhill from our visit a couple of years ago. Especially if you're not into the shopping thing.

Bertrand at Mr. A's looks yummy! :teeth: I think I'll make a reservation there for one of the nights. George's also looks great to me. Since everyone seems to think we should dine at the Ocean Terrace Bistro (we'd have lunch there) instead of George's, I guess I'll need to decide on another restaurant for our other dinner.

Thanks for the link for Top of the Hyatt. That looks like an amazing view. Do you have any idea how far it is from the Marriott, & do they have live music. I would love to be able to find a place for after dinner drinks that is near the Marriott, & has live music w/ atmosphere (i.e. Jazz). I may be asking for too much though. :confused3

You can come up north on the 15 freeway about an hour and go to the Temecula Wineries. It is a small liitle nook in So Cal but the wines are actually pretty good and its atmosphere is almost of a mini Napa Valley. There is also an "Old Town" district that has antiquing and some KintKnack stores. There is also Pechanga (where I work) a 4 diamond Indian Casino.

The Hyatt is next door to the Marriott. I do not recall whether or not they have live music. The last time I was there, a man gave his girlfriend a bouquet of roses and the tissue paper caught fire from a nearby candle. The flames then set the napkins and table cloth on fire and I had to throw my drink on their table! :firefight That is my most distinctive memory about the Top of the Hyatt, although the view is indeed wonderful.

Thanks again for all the SD tips. :cool1: Our reservation @ Bertrand @ Mr. A's is made. :woohoo: It must be good. It seems to be very popular. Opentable had no availability there. It was the only hotel that was full that evening according to Opentable. I was able to snag a reservation through Sandiegorestaurants.com, but not for the time we wanted. Later is fine though. :)

Wow, I would say the Hyatt qualifies as being convenient to the Marriott. :teeth: We may just have to check out the view. Hopefully, our experience won't be quite as eventful as Luken's. :rotfl2:

I'm still trying to decide between Georges at the Cove or the Ocean Terrace. BTW, about what time is sunset in SD?

I really wish we had more time. There's so much we'd like to see & do. We'll have to return someday soon.

I'm a fan of Seaport Village too, although I haven't been there in a few years, so I can't say whether it's "gone downhill" was one of the posters mentioned. It's an open air shopping and dining area right on the water. It's not a huge place, but you could probably spend a couple of hours there. We like to go at night because it just looks really pretty (and we're usually doing something like the Zoo or Sea World during the day). They have horse carriage rides (or at least they used to) that leave from there too.

We like to shop at Horton Plaza. It's a pretty big mall, and we like to joke that whoever designed it must've been on drugs because the escalators are in weird places (not symmetrical like most malls) and it's almost like a multi-level mall. They have some of the typical department and chain stores, but they also have unique shops as well. The last time we were there we ate at Napa Valley Grille on the top level of the mall (I think this is actually a chain - I recall eating at a place of the same name in Providence, RI), and even if it is a chain, we thought it was excellent! We liked everything about it from the food, to the service, to the atmosphere.

There is a shopping mall in La Jolla that we went to years ago that seemed pretty good (we didn't have a lot of time), but unfortunately I can't remember the name!

Since you like history and culture, you may want to consider visiting the Cabrillo National Monument. It's right on the cliffside. Nearby, there is a very impressive cemetery, I think where they buried servicemen, that we stopped to look at.

Balboa Park sounds like something you'd be interested in, although I can't say I've visited any of the attractions there aside from the Zoo.
