We are staying at the Holiday Inn in San Diego (on the bay) in a few weeks and was wondering what the best beach to visit would be.

Even though it is on the beach it lists beaches as almost 7 miles away (can't figure that one out) and we won't have a car. I don't want to waste time and money going from beach to beach if one or more are lousy.

Also how is public transportation generally? I'll be on my own, but it will be daytime.

Being on the bay means you're on the water, not the beach! That's why it's so far. It's a nice little hotel with access to the bayfront and, a bit further down, seaport village. You can take a launch from Seaport Village to Coronado and walk to the beach from there, although it's a mile or so from where the launch lands you. There are buses up and down Harbor Dr and a trolley station not far from the hotel. Public transportation is not good in So CA, but it's about the best we offer here.

I did figure it out. Not being on the coast I have to remember bay isn't ocean.

I took the ferry over to Coronado and it was beautiful.

Coronado is very beautiful and the beach is perfect. We went down the pacific coast highway and looked from Laguna down to San Diego and Coronado was the best.
