My baby is at Fort Sam, can anyone tell me how safe they are that far inland?

The further away from the coast, the better...but precautions are still necessary--if it hits Texas as a 4...hurricane force winds will be felt well in-land.

(Katrina...hurricane force winds...as far north as the Tennessee border).

Not much comfort, but your son/daughter should plan to stay indoors--and stock up on items for a very blustery/rainy day indoors--keeping in tune with news stations to know what Rita will be doing at all times and keeping alert for tornado warnings and such. Keeping in a safe room...and definitely not venture outside due to flying debris and falling trees/power lines.

For clean up--absolute caution with chain saws...and treating every fallen power line as a hot wire.

Im very close to Galveston and San Antonio is a 3 hour drive west for me. They may get some rain around there but they wont get very bad weather conditions. Thats one of the cities we are being told to evacuate to.
Your baby should be safe! :grouphug:

Thanks Lisa, she's in the national guard there at the base. I have to assume they know what they are doing there. I'm just wondering what to expect.
I've sent her an email, but she hasn't been able to respond yet.

I'm in SA, not really concerned as we are far fron the coast. I'm most worried about tornados and flooding due to rain. We were supposed to go to Corpus but have canceled.

DH (he's in the news business) is reporting lots of rain, threat of tornado and wind gusts up to 60mph.

She might be busy ;)...preparing for the aftermath.

(just a guess)

LOL, Deena, :grouphug: You be careful.

Thanks RadioNate :)

She should be fine at Fort Sam. The 50-knot wind cone only has a 10-15% chance by the time it hits SA. The problem SA gets, particularly around the low-lying areas comes from flooding.

The area near I-35 at I-410 is always under 5-6 feet of water when they get a good rain. The good thing about SA is that there aren't a preponderance of homes in the flood plain.

They'll get some wind and rain, but it will be a lot like we experienced here in Mississippi during Katrina...only with fewer trees.

I live in San Antonio and we do get weather from storms that are hitting the coast but it is mostly the feeder bands....Flooding is a problem in the streets but she should be safe if she stays on Post during the storm. Anytime it rains in San Antonio it is prudent to stay away from low water crossings and not chance it....People are swepts away every year because of their own stupidity trying to cross over water in their cars....
San Antonio has the worst drainage system....It floods with even the slightest rain. I think we are far enough inland to avoid the real damage that the hurricane can cause.

Just a little busy I imagine. lol

Your baby will be fine. With the kind of summer we've had around here (little rain) I was teasing my husband - who obsesses over his yard - that every little city around us will get rain, but not S.A.!

San Antonio tends to flash flood during a hard storm. But nothing too horrible. We're also a destination city on the official Texas "Hurricane Evacuation Route" from those coming from the Corpus Christi area. Just yesterday the Red Cross reported that they had a surplus of supplies at the base in case they were needed, so it sounds like we're set in case we need to take in more evacuees.

Oh, we're about 2 1/2 hrs. away from Corpus Christi - around 150 miles or so.

My DS is attending college in Corpus Christi. So far the school has not decided to close down. Corpus has not been asked to evacuate either, so I am watching every weather report I can find. We are not really sure what to do yet. Please send lots of prayers to the Gulf Coast this weekend.

You all in the way of Rita take care. :grouphug:

Vicki
You are right....we have had a very dry summer in SA....Hopefully the ground will soak the rain up like a sponge and flooding will be kept to a minumum....I wonder if the school will let out for the day if the weather turns bad.....Our schools are famous for waiting to the last minute to decide to cancel....

Our girls were in Catholic school in SA. The school cancelled as situations became necessary from flooding...and it happened twice as the school was right next to Cibolo Creek. The good thing about school being cancelled was that the communications system was MUCH better there than it is here in Mississippi!

Just another Texan checking in to let you know that your DD will be fine. Just a little wind and rain. :grouphug:

I had the "fortune" to be at a business meeting in San Antonio in 1998(?) when you guys had rain of biblical propotion. If I'm not mistaken it was something like 20 inches in a day and a half. We were on the River Walk, and the only thing that kept the downtown area "dry" was they opened the diversion tunnels that allowed water to bypass the downtown area. The city was a mess!

Yep..could not have said it better myself. It's amazing to me how many people go through those low water crossings!
My home is literally within feet of Ft. Sam. Your baby should be fine. We are one of the cities that the coast is evacuated to.

Fort Sam is pretty sturdy so I wouldn't worry at all. San Antonio could flood a little if the storm moves that way but we all need rain so badly that I don't think it would be a bad flood.
