What are your thought son San Angel Inn? Is it any good?

I'm having dinner there this evening for the first time. There is a thread from earlier that I started asking for menu selections.... we shall see! I'm looking forward to it, and heck - if there are margarita's I'll be happy!

The food is great and atmosphere is wonderful. The only complaint we have is that it is very cramped in our opinion. But don't let that stop you, we love the place, be sure to pay attention to the smoke from the volcano, there's a hidden Mickey.

We ate there in March, and it was wonderful! I had the Plato Mexicano and a combination strawberry/lime frozen margarita. I can hardly wait to return. :thumbsup2 Anyway, I did a dining review a few weeks ago, and this restaurant was included....if you're interested you could find it by searching my screen name. Enjoy your dinner! :goodvibes

We've enjoyed it the times we have been there, but it's been years since we were last there. For ambience it's about the coolest place on property.:earsboy:

Could not have said it better myself! :)

I'm glad so many people liked this restaurant. I've not tried it yet but am anxious to do so. CherylDan -- read your great review! I may not fit this restaurant in on my upcoming trip - it's a short one and I'm hoping to get into Le Cellier but if not ... will have to try San Angel -- and definately on my birthday trip in 2007!

Yikes.. here is an opposing opinion....too dark, noisey, and I did not think that food was that good. Also, the service was lacking, we went for lunch, but this was a year ago, so maybe they have made some improvements...it does happen with changes in staff etc.

I think it's great!...is it "real" Tex-Mex? -- no. But I've always found the food, drinks and atmosphere-wonderfull! :)

Another dissenter here...We ate there in Sept '05 for dinner. While the background with the volcano is enchanting, we found it to be cramped and the service not good (or at least not as good as the other TS restaurants we visited). We also did not love the food. It was OK, but our local Mexican restaurant serves way better food for a far better price. I'm glad we ate there once for the experience, but I don't plan to go back.

We really enjoy the San Angel Inn. The food is good and the atmosphere is wonderful. I hope they still have the kalhua ice cream pie for dessert when we go back!

It is also very DARK. Very very dark. Bring a flashlight!

Did I mention that it was DARK?

Oh so dark.

it is in no way Tex-mex. THey may have a burrito or something like Tex-mex but It is not the best of the menu.

I like the Sope (appitizer) It is a soft corn tortilla with black beans, chicken, greens, and queso blanco (cheese) topped with a green sauce that is very good.

The other menu item that is a must for me is the Sopa. (soup) it is a clear broth with chicken, cilantro, lime juice, avacado slices, and a poblano pepper, (a good flavorful, but mild pepper) it is whole, so you can pull it out.

I will get these two dishes as dinner unless their specials are better,

one dish is the National Dish of Mexico (I don't know the spanish name)
but it looks like the Mexican Flag, and it is sooooo, good.

The salsa is good, but the chips are just bags of Tostidos.

Try a lunch or early or late dinner and beat the crowds and get a riverside table.

:rotfl: Ah, but that is what I like about it! Beyond relaxing :cloud9: The Margaritas go well with the dim lighting.

The wait staff is also very kind.

We love this place. But we are also BIG mexican food fans! We really enjoyed the food. The atmosphere is great. We sat by the rail and watched the boats go by. The only thing I wish was better is how close the tables are together.

It is owned and operated by the owners of the orginial San Angel Inn, in Mexico City.

It is not Tex-Mex, it is traditional Mexican.

We like this restaurant very much, but have taken friends who were expecting Tex-Mex and of course were disappointed.

I suggest you check the menu on Allears.net.

Yes!!---
The food is wonderful in my opinion. And the atmosphere is amazing. A definate must in my opinion. :wave2:

My whole family loves Mexican food and none of us liked the food at San Angel. The atmosphere is great but the food wasn't.

We haven't eaten here is several (five?) years but enjoyed it when we went. The biggest complaints seem to be service, the closeness of the tables (it is tight and dark, did bicker mention dark?), and the food. People who don't like the food come in two categories, those that don't like it because it isn't Tex Mex (it isn't, but we did have very similar food in Akumal, Mexico last year - if the food in Akumal was authentic, so was this) and those that just don't like it. Which will happen to anywhere. We found the service unremarkable either direction.

Ah yes, the combination of the margarita last night and the dim lighting were just the right thing to mellow me out!

It was fortunate that a misinformed CM at the tram stop told us that the trams were no longer running last evening (it was only 10pm), and DD and I had to walk to our car in "C" lot. It gave me a chance to walk of the mellowness before I drove home!

I also found the wait staff to be very kind!
