salesgirl asked if I was 55 or older (for discount) ahhhh

I disagree with the people who say that the worker can't catch a break - just don't ask! Management should just post a sign offering a Senior Discount, and what age they consider "Senior". Believe me, if people want the discount, they'll ask.

I worked at a theater for 4 years. There was a sign for senior discount clearly posted right where you buy your tickets. Multiple times a day we would get complaints from seniors who did not get the senior rate because they did not ask for it. If employees asked, people get mad. If they don't ask even though it is clearly posted and hard to miss, people get mad because they didn't get the rate.

People are way too sensitive about their age. The employee is just trying to save you money.

I just have to say that I am so glad that I am not alone!:rotfl: it happened to me at Goodys one day and my kids just about fell down laughing. I was mad! I'm only 43 years old, and I don't think I look that old at all.

I think a better solution for this would be to post something by the check out register saying to inquire about Senior discounts or something. That would take the pressure off of the sales people and not embarrass the customer.

After reading the post before me, if someone got mad at that point just happily give them a refund.

I think most of the time, the cashiers really don't see YOU. They see a person who will yell if they don't get a discount, and they see a person who is insulted if they are asked how old they are.

She may have just had trouble with another customer who yelled at her because she didn't get the Senior discount.

I agree that she should have asked how many Seniors, and how many Adults were in your party. Sometimes people would LOVE to save money - so they say they are older. The cashier doesn't really know what you want, so they try to save you money. It has nothing to do with how you look. She probably didn't even notice what you looked like. :goodvibes

What management "should" do and what they "do" do are two different things most times.

My boss told us to ask people if they qualified. She hated it when people would come up to pay at the register and say "oh, we're seniors" and then she'd have to change the bill for them because the server didn't ask them and give them a correct bill.

We had a dry erase board in the lobby, telling what items were on the buffet and in BIG BOLD COLORED LETTERS I put "PLEASE TELL YOUR SERVER IF YOU QUALIFY FOR THE SENIOR 55 AND UP DISCOUNT." Many people don't bother to read the sign and follow the instructions. :sad2:

I got my first Senior 50+ Discount yesterday! I felt old and excited at the same time!

I'm saving $10/night at a hotel across the street from Disneyland! Yea, me!! :cheer2:

My dad would always laugh about when someone thought he deserved a senior discount... and he always took it (unless they required actual ID). My dad golfs often, and there was a young man at the pro shop who thought he was a senior and always gave him a discount. Dad wasn't complaining.

Now he's 58 and actually gets most senior discounts... and it's great. We saved about $400 on our last cruise because he's over 55.

People don't read signs. They expect people to just simply "know" things or for everyone to cater to them. Putting a sign up might get a few people to ask for their discount... but you would still have a large number who don't and still get peeved off when they are not given it.

I mean, if people can't read signs like "line starts here" or "Bathroom closed" can we really expect a sign to help in this case?
