Do note that its actually sales and use tax. If you buy something in a tax free state for use in a taxing state, you are supposed to remit use tax.
(Few do, its sort of obscure, I don't think its often prosecuted - not paying use tax is like driving 5 miles over the speed limit - but that is the law).
