Sales Tax Holiday

NH doesn't have sales tax. :cool1:

I keep forgetting when I go to other states and buy something with exact change and the price is different at the register... :p

Indiana has nothing. They suck every cent they can from us. I just paid $200.39 in book rental to the school system yesterday too. Yeah, book rental for my kid's free public education. I think we're the only state that charges for our free public education too.

I've never heard of a tax free weekend before...we don't have one in Washington.

NYC used to have very high sales tax on clothes, so back-to-school shopping discounts were eaten up by the taxes. NY passed a law in 2005 eliminating sales tax on clothing except pricey luxury stuff. (Think fur coats and designer fashion.) The city/state had to do something because many people shopped for back-to-school stuff in New Jersey, where there was no sales tax on clothing. The Newport Mall in Jersey City, NJ had a parking lot of cars with NY plates during the last weeks of August. (School starts in NYC right after Labor Day.)

North Carolina's tax-free weekend is Aug 3-5, 2012 - starts tomorrow! Clothing, footwear, school supplies, sporting goods, computers and other equipment are tax-free.
In November 2012 (2-4) there will be another tax-free weekend for Energy Star appliances. If you can hold off until then to buy a washer/dryer/etc., you can save a little extra money.

Texas' Tax Free Weekend:

The tax free weekend for general merchandise purchased in Texas is scheduled for August 17-19, 2012 and applies to the following items:

•Clothing and footwear under $100
•School supplies under $100
•Backpacks under $100 for elementary and secondary students

CA doesn't have it, but the Kohl's here in So.Cal is having a tax free weekend this weekend.

okay, i don't usually shop at all on tax free weekend, due to the crowds, so please forgive my ignorant question, but i was wondering:

if i shop online, do i pay sales tax on items that qualify for the tax free weekend? because, usually, whenever i buy something online, i end up paying sales tax, just as if i'd bought the item(s) in a local store; so, if i could avoid the sales tax AND not have to leave home, that would be AWESOME.

Minnesota doesn't have one, but clothes at not taxable to start with, including shoes. Neither are groceries (junk food is).

August 19-25 for CT
We used to be tax free on clothes till recently

Found this... Can I Order by Mail, Telephone, E-Mail or Internet?
The holiday also includes purchases of qualified items sold via mail, telephone, e-mail or Internet if the customer orders and pays for the item and the retailer accepts the order during the holiday for immediate shipment, even if delivery is made after the exemption period.

Thanks for asking, looks like I'll be shopping via internet. :thumbsup2

It's a shame that e-readers are excluded from the tax holiday here in NC. :(

Georgia is Friday & Saturday, August 10-11 (coming back after a 2-year absence! :thumbsup2)

Clothing and shoes up to $100 (per item)

School supplies

Computers up to $1,000

Unfortunately, I will be in Missouri on those dates........ dang it!! :guilty:

:cheer2: Thanks for posting! I was bummed that GA didn't have tax free for a few years and I even looked to see it it had been added this year. Didn't anything posted.

School starts on Mon here, I'm still wondering where the summer went. Bought the school supplies today but no clothes or shoes yet. Can't get in the mood with all this heat. :crazy2: DD does need shoes though.

BTW tax free for AL TN NC SC are all this weekend. 8/3-8/5

Clothing and shoes are always tax free in my state and the neighboring state.

Another neighboring state has no sales tax at all on anything! For some people it is worth the gas and tolls to buy a large ticket item like a computer, appliance, engagement ring, etc.

Cindy, I'm guessing you are talking about PA and DE? :)

DE is the tax free state.

PA and NJ both have no sales tax on clothes/shoes. (At least it did when I lived in PA- Don't think it changed)
