SAHM going back to school?

Anybody go back to school, after being a SAHM? How did it turn out? Did you enjoy it?

I am considering going to the local community college next fall to study Earth Science.

Right now I am getting ready to brush up on my Algebra - something that was never a good subject for me, but is a requirement for the class, before I take the college placement test.

I am at a place in my life where I want to do something for me, ya know.

My previous form of study was travel, and we all know that most people make their own travel reservations online, the exception being mostly businesses.

Just curious to know experiences of adults, SAHM's, going back to school worked out.

Yes, I was a SAHM for 16years and now I am a lunch lady!! LOL!! love it!!

I had a degree from college when I was in my early 20's but basically didn't use it for a job since then. While married I did a few part time jobs for extra money but I considered myself a SAHM.

4 yrs ago while dealing with my 2 Type 1 children...I 24/7/365 nursing job without the title or schooling. I decided to become an actual nurse. 4 yrs and much sweat later I just passed my RN boards and now can say I'm a RN.

I think if you have a specific goal in mind that will help put you in the right direction but if not concentrate on the core course. Eng 101/102, psych 101, sociology 101, history...

I did my RN degree at a community college and feel I got a great education. So, pick a course or two and go for it.

I went back to school full time (to finish the degree I started right out of high school) when my DS was 18 months old. I was a married mother living off-campus, so I was considered a non-trad student, even though I was only 24. LOL

My experience was great and I graduated with my BA when DS was 3 and I was five months pregnant.

I won't lie ~ it was hard being a wife, mother and full-time student. I wouldn't have been able to do what I did without the 100% support of DH.

We all need something for ourselves. You can do it!

I earned a BS in Accounting in my early twenties, but I became a SAHM several years later when my oldest was born. I never loved accounting and started thinking about doing something else once my kids were in school. When DS started kindergarten I went back to college for my teaching certificate. I went to school full-time for 1.5 years before graduating with a BS in Elementary Education in 2010. I've been teaching since graduation.

I won't lie and say it was a walk in the park. Balancing everything took some time to perfect (ha...as if that ever happens!) but millions of families do it every day. It takes a team effort to keep all the balls up in the air, but it's been worth it thus far. Given the current state of education, I can't say with 100% certainty that I'd do it again, but I love my job.

I decided to become a nurse after being a SAHM for 5+ yrs. I went to my local community college and did all my prereqs one at a time, the first 3 classes online (English, psych, and nutrition). My youngest were 18 month old twins at the time. I had a very supportive husband or I never would have made it through the 2 yrs of nursing school. I've been an RN for about a year and a half now. I did enjoy getting out of the house and using my brain .

A bonus for me, I guess, is that it won't be so much for career purposes, but more for self-gratification, and a desire to learn more about that area.

Unless we move out of this area, which is highly unlikely at the moment, there will be no way for me to pursue a career in that field.

Just wanted to say congratulations on passing your boards. That's a great accomplishment!

This is me, too. I earned an accounting degree my first time through college and worked in corporate accounting for 10 years, but like the PP, it just wasn't for me. I became a SAHM when my first daughter was born and returned to school when she was in kindergarten and my younger DD was in preschool. I am now in my final year of PTA school and will graduate in May.

It has been very difficult at times to balance school and family, particularly this semester when I have clinicals M/W/F and classes all day on T/TH. I'm only able to study after the kids are in bed most nights, and I usually spend a good part of both weekend days studying. After graduation, my goal is to work PRN three days a week so that I can be home in the afternoons with my girls. Right now, PRN work seems to be what is in demand.

Will it be worth it in the end? I sure hope so!

I'm back in school part time after having been a SAHM for the better part of 13 years. I am attempting to finish what I started when I was a Full time working, single mom. Unfortunately, too many years have passed to transfer most of those classes so I have had to repeat a few. I started last spring just taking one class at a time but I am applying to the Radiologic Technologist program, which will be full time starting next September. Not sure how I'll manage full time school, part time work and family. I feel like i spend all my time studying as it is just taking 1 or 2 classes! we'll see how it goes if I get in. I say go for it....you'll never know if you like it until you try!

I have a middle school Algebra teacher I can pass the books to after I am done, so I tried to find books that got great ratings and that will interest me more - I think these will do the trick. I have never been good at math - barely passed Algebra - so fingers crossed.

I figure that come next fall, I will know if I am serious about going back to school. And that gives me plenty of time to brush up on my math.

Now THIS is inspirational. This is what I want to do, and have to start all over from scratch because I've been out of school 20 years now. I am ready for it. I've decided to not share my goals with people anymore, unfortunately people have a way of trying to discourage others for whatever reasons...who knows. I am tired of other people telling me what they think I should do with MY life.

My Mom graduated from college summa cum laude with her BSN at age 50, after her father refused to sign for her to go to college when she was 18.

She finally fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse...after being a single mother and becoming a grandmother.
