Safety question ?

I respect your fear and concern as valid to you, but I also grew up in the 1990s and I don't personally recall them being carefree at all.

Between the Murrah Federal Building being attacked by domestic terrorists, a group of extremists in Waco creating a standoff that ended in a conflagration that killed so many innocent children and women, the first attack on the WTC by Osama bin Laden's newly established al Qaeda, the first Gulf War, the regular bombings in Northern Ireland, the sarin attack on Tokyo's subway system that was "guaranteed to be heading to the USA next," the cold-blooded murder of several American physicians by the self-named "Army of God," the Atlanta Olympic bombings by another domestic terrorist from the "Army of God," and many others that I'm sure I'm forgetting, as a teen and young adult it was quite intimidating and flat-out scary at times. Now, as an adult, I realize that I've never been more safe living in my cocoon of privilege and am quite aware that I'm far more likely to be killed in a car accident driving into work than I am to be killed in a modern version of the scary events I remember from the 1990s.

And right now I'm personally inspired and excited by the civil rights protests by members of Black Lives Matter and others, and while I do not like some of the most extreme actions of a very small segment of its membership, I am in full support of their primary efforts and goals and am proud to watch them develop.
When most of that stuff happened I was little so I did not know most of it happened. I do remember the bombing at the 96 summer games we were in Disney world when that happened it was in the papers but I don't remember watching the news since I was only just 12 at the time. My parents did not watch the news when we were around or talk about the bad stuff when we were around.

I'm not going back to look, but wasn't that referring to a particular route?
Here's the full post. Not asking about a route, just "down that way" (from New York).

We are supposed to go to Virginia beach in a few weeks for a softball tournament. Do you think we should be worried driving down that way with all the stuff going on with the black lives matter events going on.

I don't think anyone said that. A protest IN NYC is why she was thinking about it, not that she thought anything south of NYC was dangerous. OP correct me if I'm wrong.

Seriously? They all play this stuff non-stop.
Well, if anyone thinks that heading a couple hundred miles "south" to a place in Virginia is less safe then residing in NYC, is pretty much screaming out concern for the location. How anyone from there could even think of VB as a "big city" environment is beyond me. What happened occurred in the south. One doesn't always have to see the words to get their hidden meaning. Perhaps, going to Dallas might be a bit scary, but, Virginia Beach... not so much.

And yes... they all play the biggest headline news game, however, I have found that Fox makes it a mission to misinform, not just a knee jerk report. If they don't have a motive they will make one up.

I was thinking of the city and south of that since we have to go through the city and new jersey to get where we are going. The south is not bad we go to myrtle beach every year as we have a summer home down there but we are not going this year since softball is taking up our summer.

You should be more worried about 95 and 64(especially Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel). You would totally miss the protests, looting and mayhem because you will be sitting in traffic, lol.

I live about 45 minutes from VA beach. The only times we had looting was GreekFest many years ago by low class college kids.

If the residents here in Newport News didn't go LA riot style when hometown zero Mike Vick got sent to prison, I doubt there will be mayhem at the ocean front for stuff that didn't even happen here

cnn is also doing the same thing they are only showing the bad stuff to get people to watch the news

The talk of shutting down roads is what had me worried

The post was too long for me to care to quote but I will add Colombine 1999.
I was in 9th grade when that happened that was a scary time for every high school kid. there was a lot of copycat stuff going on after that happened

The tossing of rocks at the cops and lots of people getting arrested

I live two blocks from where the later part was happening. I could hear none of it from my porch. I only knew it was going on because I opened Twitter. No one on either side got hurt.
The photos look scary because after a few rocks were thrown and the protest went to a location in the middle of the bar district late on a Friday, the decision was made to have the cops put on helmets and carry shields for protection.

There was no property damage. No fires.

To suddenly be fearful to leave town....is a massive overreaction. A similar protest could happen anywhere.

So you went to myrtle beach last year?

There was no concern last year when Baltimore just had the riots that lasted a month? That had a cvs, new construction buildings, vehicles, etc lit on fire. National guard had to be called in. Police officers were told they didn't know when they would get a day off or be able to go home to their families. Police officers across the nation were warned that they may have an uprising against them were told people are ganging together to just kill them just because they are an officer due to the unrest of not only the city but throughout the country.

Yet none of that warranted your concern for safety last year for your traveling family or your police spouse so why is this year different? I don't get it.

Actually I just googled and read about the incident from several sources. The most notable thing was that two reporters were detained (one actually arrested) and have since received apologies from both the police chief and the mayor for what was done to them. Many people find detaining and arresting reporters disturbing in a democracy.

Watch the video of it happening. There were four people from that news station on the street at that time. An Asian female with a giant microphone, a cameraman of unknown race, and two African-Americans holding only cell phones. The male was on the sidewalk and had nothing to indicate he was media. The female was in the middle of the street and the station logo on her shirt was maybe 1-2" big. You see the police clearing the street, ordering everyone to disperse, and detaining those who will not. How were the police to know the two reporters with no gear were there as reporters? Especially the one standing in the middle of the street as they approached?

Also, local media made a stink that they were detained for a few minutes AND THEN asked why they were given special treatment and released!!! Me thinks it was all to generate headlines.

I think you will be just fine. But if you are worried you can never be too careful when it comes to your kids. If it will cause you stress, maybe delay the trip or choose another destination.

The height of tourist season is here, too much money would be lost so the cops just wouldn't allow that.

Three was a PEACEFUL protest in Norfolk ,a nearby city today. But there were also vigils for the murdered police officers as well.

Besides, in a few weeks, another plane may go down or something else to make big news and take the spotlight off.

I have more concern this year because we will be in an area that has held these events
