Safety question ?

I think they want their voices heard. Admittedly, racism still exists in all segments of our society. we have seen the terrible consequences when a racist person is given a little bit of authority. Lives are at stake. Black lives have been lost due to the biased judgement of individual police officers. Followed by white police lives lost due to biased actions of the individual racist shooter in Dallas. It is all so very very wrong!

The protesters are frustrated that the existence of racism and bias is still being denied. The protests get out of hand because they are symbolically yelling louder and louder. To label all protesters and "these crazies" contributes to the problem. They want to be heard and unfortunately too often their peaceful protests get no attention so the protesting escalates and the opinions of the people who label them as "these crazies" are made stronger.

Our law enforcement leaders need to take a stand and make it clear that racism and racially biased judgement decisions will not be tolerated. It has to end. Otherwise our society is doomed.

In my mind, I was referring to those like the shooter in Orlando, the shooter in Dallas, the shooter in the church who were not part of an organized protest. As proven in Dallas and as stated in this thread Atlanta, a protest can happen in peace as long as the "crazies" don't show up. And I agree with your last paragraph.

Maybe she's worried about being overrun by tourists? I always think of Virginia Beach as being a nice, beachy, touristy area, kind of like Myrtle Beach. Or maybe the tourists and the Navy families are going to get into a rumble, like the Sharks and the Jets? Beyond that, I don't know why Virginia Beach would be any scarier or prone to riots and looting than, say, Tallahassee or Annapolis. Or pretty much any other city. Be honest, how many of us had even heard of Ferguson, MO at this time 2 years ago?

I am seriously not worried about traveling in the states - and I'm not even armed up to the hilt.
I see no reason why other people should be worried about going about their daily business.

We never heard of these places before any of this happened. We have to go through major cities to get to Virginia beach that is what has me worried

The issue is you never here about the events where nothing bad happens they only put the bad stuff on the news and that make other people want to cause issues at these events.

When the news gets to be too much, I turn it off. Go play outside with the kids, clean the house, go for a walk, volunteer with those less fortunate.

Can we be super serious for one minute? Are you honestly telling me that your husband is a police officer and you are a teacher in New York and your concern is just driving through major cities to get to Virginia Beach?

I'm rarely ever not sarcastic and completely serious but I am dropping that persona for just a minute to really try to rationalize that thought process. I don't get it. Can you please help me understand?

We are in upstate ny. And yes my husband is a state trooper. I am worried going through these cities and having these groups shut down a highway we are on.
