The below article is really sad. We are basically seeing a community wiped out. I disagree with bailouts and how this mess is being handled but this article really made me feel for these people. I hope this is over soon and we, as Americans, learn something from it.

I wonder if this would have made the news if the economy was doing better?

I know how you feel, these poor people.

I mean I got laid off on Friday and was stunned and even still stunned today.

2 more got it today, that were doing very well so who knows the rhyme or reason.

I think someone on here started a thread by saying instead of giving that money to the BIG COMPANIES or what have you. Give it to the people. That way we can pay off the mortgages, buy things so that stores won't go out of business. I mean this is a domino effect. We were at 1.2 million jobs lost as of Oct. 31. Well its already Nov. 10 (Happy Birthday Marines!!) and 8,000 lost for DHL and I know the company that I worked for probably got rid of the same amount if not more.

This is getting very scarey. How are these people going to work and afford their homes and food and gas I mean just the immediate bills. I feel for them I really really do.:sad1:

it's a shame that all these businesses are cutting so many workers. There is work out there but to have to pick up and go find it in another State is sad...be prepared because you never know ...someday this could be you.....

Save at least 6 months-1 years worth of emergency funds...if you have not started that yet...start today....We saw this all coming about 2 years ago and started getting rid of all our debt....that was the best decision we ever made.

Best luck to everyone.....may GOD's blessings be with you

It is horrible. My brother works there and there are no jobs anywhere to be had. The bailouts are just plain wrong and the gov keeps giving them to the rich for their spa resorts, golf vacations and whatever, but it's never enough for them. The people that work their tails off to take care of their families get the shaft. They also announced today a lot of the towns around here are laying off police and closing jails when we need more jails. I am just sick about what we've become selling all these companies to other countries and we'll never get the jobs back over here. This is sick! :sad1:

It's been on the news for a couple of months now, they've known for a while that it was going to close. It is sad though.

Yes they have known for awhile but today it was announced there will be 10,000 because DHL will only be doing international shipping because it wwas bought by GERMANY. My DH company was bought by the Netherlands. Anhauser busch, Miller etc have all been sold to other countries. I just do not understand how the gov could have let this happen.

The picture of that man really gets to me. He has those worried, sad eyes that I've been seeing so often.

I agree that it's good to have 6 months to a year of money saved to live on. The problem is that some are still trying to recover from prior layoffs. They haven't had time to save.

DHL is a German owned company and always has been. It was outcompeted by FEDEX and UPS.

This community is my home. My family is not personally affected by the actual losing of a job, but we know friends who have. Every place we look there are houses for sale & so many people are facing an uncertain future.

We only live about 3 miles or so from DHL/ABX/Airstar & hearing the planes come in is just part of our lives...it will be so eerily quiet when they stop.

Hopefully something comes along that can pick up the pieces that DHL is leaving behind. :confused3

I even voted for the casino hoping it would help with the jobs. My prayers are with all of you.

DeutschePost purchased shares in DHL as far back as 1998, and has had majority ownership since 2001. This is not a direct result of the ownership but due to the world wide economic conditions.

Frankly, I use DHL (not by choice) very regularly in America, and their service has been very poor for me - I average about 15-20% failure rate for packages, some which never ever turned up.

They do have a good and competitive international service, however, including service to countries not served by couriers based in other countries.

I feel very bad for all those losing their jobs, but your statement implies that DHL was recently purchased by Germans and hence the job loss; that is not the case.

Wie berichtet könnte die Deutsche Post weltweit bis zu 40.000 Stellen abbauen

Worldwide job loss may reach 40,000

That's the entire issue here, a job creation issue was on the ballot to offset the loss of most of these jobs, and the people voted no. Granted a DHL job is better, but when an entire town is about to fall off the map, a job is a job regardless of what type of job it is. I left Ohio 5 years ago due to lack of work, it just seems that those in charge of government there have no idea how to attract jobs and keep them there.

"I agree that it's good to have 6 months to a year of money saved to live on."

Unfortunately alot of people live paycheck to paycheck and are unable to save that kind of money.
With the high cost of food, gas, rent and just everyday living costs makes it impossible for alot of people to put money away for a rainy day.

Agreed. COL has increased so much over the past 3 years, income has not kept pace. Those people already strapped before are very hurt now. It's not easy to start saving when you are behind the eight ball and don't have any disposable income.

I have three sons in the workforce. One still works (as a coach), the middle one's bank clerk job was elimimated two weeks ago and my 3rd son came home at noon yesterday saying he had been laid off for the rest of the week. He works in a factory.

I'm sorry if I had some details wrong. It's just that my heart is breaking for everyone in this world for what is coming and I just needed to let it out to my Dis family. When I was young I don't thinl I worried as much as i do now, especially now. :sad1:

I agree give the bailout money to the people instead of the companies, It would help the economy people can get out of debt. IT would help people spend more.

I saw this on the news yesterday. It was heartbreaking. The problem I have with bailouts is that I don't see them helping the workers. The U.S. bailed out banks and mortgage companies, yet Octobers foreclosures rates were record high.
Unfortunately, I agree with the previous poster.. this is only the beginning. the auto industry will be next and that will be 10's of 1000's unemployed.

Think about the fall out. these folks from dhl will not be spending money during the holidays so the local economy will tank. (holiday sales are almost 50% of retails business) and then it snowballs.
