Sad news at my house today

minnie, i worked for a vet when i was young, and from experience, and things the vets would tell, most folks held on to their pets far to long for the pets good because they could not LET GO,, most often, the best thing to do when it comes to cancer is to say goodbye, put the pet down and move foward. its the best thing that the family can do for itself and the pet. i'm sorry you did not like what was said, but somebody should say it.

I'm sorry, I know how devastated you all must be. :grouphug:

I'm so sorry. How old is your pet? I can't imagine how sad you must be right now.

Thanks for the hugs and prayers. Kellie is 11 and the sweatest dog. We have had her since she was a baby. We could opt to amputate her leg but that won't extend her life and the vet said that with a large dog it may make it hard for her to get around. We also think that would be too traumatic for the boys. We could give her chemo but that is something like $600 an injection and, unfortunately, we can't afford that right now.

maybe u need to think of the dog first,, pain will be very real for him/her,, maybe its time to put her down now

Yes, we know the pain is very real for her. We are managing it right now with meds and when the time is right, we will make that decision. We will know when that day comes.

If you don't mind my asking, how did you know something was bothering her? Did she have a lump or anything?

She started limping on her front right leg about a month and a half ago. We took her to our vet and they x-rayed her elbow and foot and said she has arthritis (which she already has in her hips). We started treating her with Rimadyl and Glucosamine chews. Neither have done anything for her limping. Some days she won't put any weight on her right leg at all. Then on Sunday she wouldn't walk up the stairs to go to bed. My DH had to carry all 80lbs of her up. So the boys and I took her back to the vet yesterday and they x-rayed her shoulder and found the cancer.

This is Kellie

Oh, Mary.....
Kellie's so sweet. It all sounds so similar... we do the Rimadyl and Glucosamine here too for the arthritis... even the 80 lb pick ups occasionally for the stairs when it's real bad.
Give her hugs from us all.

Linda

I just wanted to say I am sorry for the sad diagnosis. It is so hard.

DH and I are putting our kitty down tonight. She was diagnosed 2 weeks ago with renal failure. She is only 4 yrs old. Despite doing what we can to help extend her life, she has taken a turn for the worse this past weekend and is suffering now. It is time but it still hurts like crazy.

Thanks for explaining that. Shiloh has what appears to be a "bulge" on his back hind leg. It's right on the bone and almost looks like a swollen joint due to arthritis. He doesn't limp or act like it bothers him. He's due for his yearly check up in a few weeks and I'll point it out to our Vet. I'm hoping and praying it's nothing. He can still run, jump, etc.

Oh, and Kellie looks like a sweetheart. :grouphug:

I'm am really sorry to hear about Kellie. It's really hard to know that our pets are sick especially when you realize they won't be around forever. For me anyways, my pets are part of my family.

and for Robertchance, people post on this board for some sympathy NOT criticism. So, unless you have something nice to say i suggest you just keep out of these threads.... jerk

She's so beautiful....
My eyes are filled with tears...life is not fair sometimes.

Our furbabies already only go part of the distance but to suffer at the end is not fair :guilty: I pray your love and compassion outweighs her hurting for as long as is possible...

Many hugs and cuddles to Kellie and her family :grouphug:

I'm so sorry to hear about Kellie. I hope she doesn't suffer. How sad :(

Sending you lots of hugs .... I had to put my Foxy Lady down a couple of months ago due heart failure... I think it was my heart that was more broken :paw: :paw: :paw:

Thank you all for your kind words and hugs.

Iluvthemouse: I'm so sorry for your loss. It's such a hard decision to have to make. I don't wish it on anyone. I'm praying for you & DH.
