This is a shootoff of the coo-pon/ q-pon thread.

I think it's definitely a regional (mostly US, from my observations) on how foyer is pronounced.

So, what say you?

edit: I say foyer (like Chevrolet)

Foy-yer like lawyer here in Upstate NY. I rarely hear it pronounced foy-yay around here. I wonder where that pronunciation comes from? Is it a French word? lol!

Where I grew up (NY), it was definitely like lawyer, but I have heard it the other way - either locally now (MA) or on TV, I don't remember. I probably shouldn't, but I kind of think of foy-yay as a snobbier pronunciation. (Nothing is meant against anyone who grew up hearing it that way!!)

I think I have said it both ways, depending on my mood at the time, maybe more often like foy-ay. It's really not a word I use much at all, but I have studied French so it may come out naturally that way. I'm not even exactly sure what a foyer is!

I always think pronouncing the 'er' sound sounds dumbed down. Like you, no offence meant to those who say it that way.

I pronounce it like En-tree way :rotfl:

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist!

I usually say "foy-yer" and have heard very few other people say it "foy-yay". I do occasionally say it like that, usually with an affected posh accent in an effort to be funny. It's one of those words that comes up so infrequently, that I kind of vary my pronunciation to the situation and audience I guess.

After all these pronunciation posts, I realize I do that with several words!

Foy-yer in my corner of the USA. When I watch House Hunters on HGTV they always say Foy-ya no matter what state they're in.

I say Foy-ay. I guess I've heard it pronounced the other way, but not typically around here in So Cal.

I don't think many Americans pronounce it quite as quickly as the French. After taking four years of HS French, I learned that syllables tend to blend into each other because words are supposed to be said quickly.

It's supposed to be foy-ay. But anyone trying to put affectation on it will probably sound more like foy-yay.
