S/O: Great Movies You Don't Like

Sideways. I'm a film buff, and there are very few well-made films that I just can't stand, but this one constantly made me want to slap all of the characters.
And what's wrong with that? It might not be your cup of tea, but there are many great films that feature unlikable protagonists or unpleasant subject matters. 12 Years a Slave or Requiem for a Dream comes to mind. Both are bravura. I never need to see the former again, however, as it was so relentlessly unpleasant.

If you ever watch “A Night to Remember” you’ll see shot for shot copies in “Titanic”

That's true, except for how the ship broke apart which was only a rumor and not considered true when "A Night to Remember" came out, but yes, James Cameron did follow that film a bit too closely

Actually, didn't the first film follow a book - this one - which was written from interviews with survivors? If so, I would expect the newer film to stick pretty close to it, in order to also take those interviews into account.

Yes but im talking camera angles and everything. You could have just subbed the scenes from one directly into the other. We can both read the same passage from the same book describing scenery but that doesn’t mean our brains will create the same exact picture.

Yes they are both pretty mindless exercises but I’m sure no one ever thought that they were creating cinematic excellence. You can add The Russians are Coming to the list

Well, yeah, and I like a good, dumb comedy. In fact I like most of The Great Race, even the pie fight, but I just hate the ending where they guy gets the girl no matter how much of a jerk he was to her (sometimes it's the other way around). It annoys me.

I avoid anything by Quentin Tarantino or older Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns or really any violent movie or slasher films…when I go to the movies, I want to be entertained- not grossed out…

Blasphemy! The older Eastwood westerns are some of the best ever made!

Musicals. Too many to name but I just do not care for musicals at all.
And any movie I have to be "woke" to understand all the subliminal messages, lol.

Totally agree with another poster's take on Lost in Translation. It seemed to be a movie taking place in Japan by someone who didn't like it there and/or had never been there. Like an anti-travelogue.

Titanic -- a hard no on this. Want to see a movie about the Titanic? See A Night to Remember.

Lawrence of Arabia. I know that as a semi film buff I'm supposed to love this movie but I cannot stand it. And I also despise the music, probably because it goes with this film. Ditto Doctor Zhivago.

Anything by the Coen brothers.

I realize this makes it seem like I'm a film hater, but really I'm a film lover! But just because something is supposed to be great doesn't mean I think it is or even that I can tolerate it.

Speaking of good films and Japan . . . if it's still playing in a theater near you, go see Godzilla Minus One. Really terrific. Not like the monster-vs-monster movies of late. A thoughtful, interesting, emotional film.

Lawrence of Arabia and Dr Z. Two amazing movies.

You might already be woke (not sure why it's in quotes). Woke is simply an adjective that means "alert to and concerned about social injustice and discrimination." All reasonable, compassionate humane people, I presume, should be concerned with social injustice, bigotry, and discrimination, so there you go. I assume you're a reasonable, compassionate, humane person so you're probably woke! Congratulations!
