S/O Coronavirus School Closing considered in your area?

Large school district in North Texas closed next week. Teachers report on Monday (we are on spring break this week) to prepare for online learning. I feel like this means we will extend the closure but I guess we'll see.

Gov Edwards just announced that all public schools in Louisiana will close until 4/13. Kids will do assignments at home.
Not all. Jefferson parish announced they won’t do remote learning b/c not all kids have the same access. We are closed til 4/15 with no online learning. Will have “optional” online learning,

VA public schools are closed. Dgd is in like a Head start program also closed until end of March for right now.

So many kids through out the USA rely on school for free or reduced breakfast and lunch, now nothing.

I have to update since this seems to be fluid. Our school system will be notifying parents about accessing instructional materials as well as notify about meal service.

Same county too!

DD is in 8th grade so they’ll do online learning. Teachers will be available remotely from home during school hours to assist children.

They also have a food drop off plan for children that receive free or reduced lunch.

My DS is in 4th Grade a special needs class for Autism. They haven’t gone into detail of what our district will be doing yet. We were told to expect more information this weekend. Good to hear your district will handle food for those kids that need it. :thumbsup2

Most CA school districts are shutting down. It started with LAUSD and San Diego Unified announcing closures this morning, and then the others are all seeming to follow suit. I am an elementary teacher, and my district announced today that we're out until April 13, which is 3 weeks plus our spring break. I didn't even know for sure before the kids were out of school today, so I didn't have a chance to say anything to them. It's pretty surreal and weird right now. I do know we will be doing some virtual learning, and that our staff is meeting next week to work together to get things set up for that so we are all on the same page. It will be optional because not all of our students have access.

All the major school systems in my area will also have free meal drive ups, including my own district. I was very happy to hear this, because many of our kids will really need that.

So not necessarily school related but it seemed relevant given all this discussion with the schools closing---

In my area we have multiple library systems. I technically have access to 4 different library systems due to reciprocity agreements.

In my county we have two. One library system has 2 locations the other library system (considered really the main one) has many branches throughout.

Today the library system with 2 locations announced that from today until Sunday they will be a "quick browsing and quick reference location to promote social distancing. Staff resources will be dedicated to helping transform library operations to a quick browsing, circulation model." However, of upmost importance is that the two library locations will be closed from March 16th until it's deemed appropriate to reopen....

Both library systems in my county have already cancelled meeting rooms, programs, book sale events, etc.

During breaks many families go to the library to engage in programs and get books for their children and with all these school closings going on (not completely in my area yet) the library, a place near and dear to my heart, isn't something I had considered yet :( While you may not think about going to library programs because it's close contact you may have thought about getting library books to occupy one's time.

Not every kid here has the same access, but they are working on plans to help those kids out. Shame on JP for not even trying.

Even without a formal order form the governor, almost all schools are now pretty much closed for at least until end of March.

Please practice social distancing.

With all the schools and businesses closing doors, I hope people are taking this virus more seriously.
On Tuesday, March 10, the US had~800 confirmed cases. Today, March 13, we’re at ~2,000 cases. Obviously there are mild cases that are unaccounted for. But, regarding confirmed cases, we are at a pace of doubling in 2.5 days unabated, mimicking Italy. There is no way the number of hospital beds and ventilators in the US can keep up with the rate of newly diagnosed Covid-pneumonia patients.

Please everyone do your part and keep distance from others, especially if you have any flu or cold-like symptoms. If you do have any symptoms, stay inside for a week until all symptoms subside.

We are also in NJ (Burlington County) and they just did a mass call once all the kids got home to everyone telling us our school district will also be closed Now until April 20th. DS(9) teacher sent him home with an “incase of school closure” packet with work sheets for him to work on while home also set up a way for us to communicate while home from school to continue his learning.
Same county too!

Same county, too! While DS27 is long past school days, my co-workers have school age children. It’s been a day by day sharing of what’s closing, etc. One co-workers children said his children go 1/2 day Monday & Tuesday (Camden County).and then he has no idea. From what I am hearing, most schools will be closing , not “if” but “when”. Another co-worker has a HS senior and his senior trip is now canceled as it was to WDW, during time the park has closed.

Are there school nurses in all the schools in the States? We don’t have them in our Province. If a child is sick, their parents get called and somebody needs to pick them up immediately. There is nobody at school to assess them.
I teach in the Boston Public Schools and one of the things our union has been fighting for is a nurse in every school. Most schools in Massachusetts have a full time nurse or one that is assigned to two schools. Schools, especially urban schools, in the Mass. are moving to a model where they offer "wrap-around" services which could be physical health, mental health, nutrition, etc. But, Massachusetts is a progressive state and has appropriately earned the title "Taxachusetts." Nevertheless, I am willing to pay those taxes as long as they go to worthy areas like the schools.

All the Success Academies (charter school) in NYC are closed until further notice. Parents were informed this afternoon and remote learning will commence on Thursday.

Yeah I agree. To be fair, they are a massive district (largest in the state). But I agree. I think they should do something. They will have optional learning, but those kids who are most in need of continued learning will be the ones who are least likely to do the optional remote learning.

Boston Public Schools will be closed from 3/17 until 4/27. They are sending students back on Monday for a "transition day." I teach in a high school and I am guessing I will have 10-20% attendance. But ... if WDW reopens by my planned travel dates, I only teach one more day before Disney!

Ok the county health officer ordered all schools closed for three weeks!!! Right after the local school district announced their closure....

Welp an update. As I suspected the large library system, the other one in my county, announced today:

"All library locations will be closing at 5 pm on Saturday, March 14 and will remain closed through Tuesday, March 31. Fines will not accrue during the closure, and pickup dates on current holds will be adjusted to allow time for patrons to pick them up after Library branches reopen."

At least this has an end date where the other library system with 2 locations lists "whenever deemed appropriate" but I suspect that end date will be renewed more than likely for additional time.

:sad1::sad1:

I completely stand by their decision so they can try and reduce exposure for their employees. None the less unfortunate news.

@Mackenzie Click-Mickelson
I was thinking the library would be a great place for DGD to study/remote learn w/ her classmates but would not be surprised if ultimately they closed here too. Her school is still open but nothing wrong w/ having a well thought out Plan B:).
Absolutely! I'm hoping yours stays open though even if they take certain measures here and there :flower3:
