Yesterday I spent a very lovely day back in time. We went to Rye Playland with friends. We had a really great time and I have to say some of the rides were great. (Dragon Coaster and Derby Racer)
The Darkrides however were so horrible and the entertainment so awful that it is enjoyable.
The boardwalk were they filmed big was all closed up except for a little arcade. My friends said they had a museum there about playland but that was also gone/ The beach is open for an admission price of $4.00. LOL
DD said they have a nice fright fest, so if you get a chance to visit this Historic Landmark before they close it down and build condos I say go. :thumbsup2:

I can remember going there in the mid 60's; it was always our end of the year school trip in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Haven't been there since then.

My family used to go there every summer when I was a kid. It's a place I'd never want to visit as an adult because that would ruin the great memories I have.

Is it closing??

We use to go once or twice a year. Didn't make it this year. What a
beautiful location.

Made the mistake of going once on a monday. THe park was closed.I felt like the family from Vacation.

How could you close an amusement park down in the summer for anyday. I mean they are only opened for 3 or 4 months.

We use to go there when I was a kid! I road my first coaster there!

Me too! It was a big day when I was tall enough to go on the dragon coaster! Loved the derby ride too. We used to go to the beach, but when my sister walked out of it with a plastic bag around her ankle, my parents decided orchard beach was better :lmao:. Been years since I have gone though, with the deaths that seem to happen yearly, I wouldn't been surprised if it eventually closed. But lots of fun memories.

we stopped there a few years ago on our way home from an upstate trip. I never went there as a kid (more Rockaway Playland and Coney Island for me), but our boys really liked it.

If you enjoy this type of park, look into Knoebel's in PA. We love it there...it is very different than Disney, busch gardens, etc... but very unique and inexpensive with lots of old time rides!

The other couple I went with said they heard that it costs the county too much money to keep it up and running. I'm thinking they are looking at that beautiful property and seeing dollar signs. It is a shame though. That is so funny about the park being closed on a Monday. I never would have thought that either. I bet that costs them money. I really hope it isn't true the park was lovely.

My brothers live in Scranton and keep telling me I should go to Knoebels. Maybe next year.
:thumbsup2

We usually take the kids at least 1x year. We all love the Dragon coaster. It's small and easy to do in a few hours and my kids adore it. I can't help but thing about how slow loading many of the rides are and how many of the people working there don't seem very happy. I think I have disney to thank for that perspective :lmao:

Not to turn this into a political thread, but yes it is true Playland loses a couple million a year at least. The facility is County owned - I grew up around here and have many fond memories, but don't like taking my kids there. It's changed - lots of punks hanging out, causing problems etc.

As far as the park closing - I don't think anything is official, but for years it's been discussed - historical landmark or not - the county should not be in the business of running an amusment park - sub it out to someone who knows how to run one and just collect rent- that way you can still be in control of preserving the historical nature of it.

OmG you brought me back! We LOOOOVED going to Rye Playland and beach when we were younger, the last time I think we went I was in my 20s. :beach:

Also remember going at the end of the school year. The Derby Racer was the best.

Another piece of history slowly fading away - how sad.

I was thinking the same thing. LOL

We went to ride the mouse ride, I'm not sure of the name and I am much smaller then my DH, The bar closed down but left a gap between me and the bar. ( We just rode the Dragon Coaster and they didn't care. Well the girl kept pushing onto the bar into my husbands stomach. We kept asking is there anything wrong and she just ignored us. Well then there were two of them pushing. When I asked again she said we need to click this bar one more time and by this time my husband was like OK but I'm not going to get any smaller. So she looked at me and said move to the back. We were like both of us? And she snapped no just you. So I rode the mouse coaster behind my husband. I felt bad for him. He is not obese but they made him feel that way. He never said anything to me but I'm sure they could had handled that differently.

Lots of old-time amusement parks used to be closed on Mondays. That was more or less the norm. But most of the ones that survived (Hersheypark, Knoebels, Cedar Point, etc) stopped closing on Mondays decades ago. Carowinds near Charlotte, NC used to close on Fridays in the 1980s.

I liked the atmosphere at Playland but I haven't been there in about 20 years.

Does anyone else remember the double ferris wheel? My parents used to take me, probably 40 years ago, and it was my favorite. I know they got rid of it years ago, and I've never seen another ride like it anywhere else.
