I need to buy my 13ds running shoes for cross country. Where is the best place to buy them? Any coupon codes for shoe stores (famous footwear or shoe carnival type) currently available?
thanks so much

I would go to a local running store. Most towns have one. All of the staff there are experts and the shoes are more about being good to your feet than fashion. They watch you walk in bare or sock feet and find shoes that best match your needs. Not always the cheapest but it may save some doctor bills from injury. I've had no luck with staff at other shoe stores actually knowing anything about running shoes.

Once you know what he needs, the best prices I've found is at runningwarehouse.com. But I agree that it might be good to get fit by professionals. I have to say though that I've been fit twice at specialty running stores where they watch you run and how your foot strikes and both times the shoes were a terrible choice for my foot. I've finally found a shoe that world for me, but it took 5 pairs and many many years. Now that I know though, I buy them at running warehouse. My first pair I got at Dick's for $120. I got my next pair for $60.

Between now and March I'm signed up for 2 5K races,a 10 mile race,6 half marathons and the Disney full marathon.Last year I ran some of these races and the Disney full using Skechers Go Run Ultras which was amazing, light with plenty of cushioning. This year since I'm running more races as well as the Goofy challenge which is the Disney half and full on back to back days I went out and bought a pair of Hoka one ones which is the most cushioned shoe available .I've been running in them and although they do have great cushioning they're stiff, they're giving me blisters in the back of my heel and although light for they're size they're still heavier and bulkier than those Skechers that were half the price.I'll keep running in them to see if I start liking them but I'm seriously considering buying another pair of the Skechers Go Run Ultras for the races that really start in October.Skechers has been bringing out running shoes to compete with higher priced running shoe companies and I think they're doing a good job, even the Boston Marathon winner Men is a Skechers guy.The model that I bought is their top of the line model but at $85 is still much more affordable than pretty much every brand out there, more important than that is that those shoes felt perfect on me from day one,It was like I didn't even have to break them in.

I buy shoes from Academy Sports, but only in store. Made the mistake of ordering online--it was in stock, but they cancelled my order because it was out of stock by the time they were shipping. I never received an email telling me it was out. Seems the "in stock" is based on warehouse and store shelves.

Anyway, DH only wears New Balance. DS19 wears several different brands. usually New Balance or Under Armour. It all depends on how they feet his feet. Once you find a good fitting shoe, keep an eye on the model numbers. Then if it goes on sale..snap up an extra pair.

I agree with PP about a specific runners store. They will measure the size, arch...all that stuff. Budget is important, but healthy feet are necessary for a lifetime. Also, make sure good socks just for running.

Go to a local running store that has a reputation for fitting shoes well. Cannot emphasize this enough - been there :). Everybody's feet are different, pronation, arch, etc. A shoe that works for one may be terribly uncomfortable and even harmful for another. Your son will be putting in a LOT more miles than he's ever done before so good shoes are an absolute MUST. Once you find a shoe that works well (and he'll have to wear it a while to know that for sure) you can find most shoes at a discount on line. Running Warehouse is a good place but there are others.

Plus it's cheaper to spend the $$ on good shoes than pay the doctor bills that will inevitably come up if the shoes are a bad fit.

Good luck to him! XC is a great sport. My son has wonderful memories and his HS team ran at WDW a couple years

Another vote for the running store! You need to get them there the first time, at least. I have found some on Zappos at a discount when the newest model comes out.

I would skip both of those and go to a local specialty running store. His cross country coach probably has some store recommendations. Try on several different brands. Do not buy shoes online that you have not tried in person. The potential damage to his feet and legs from ill-fitting shoes cannot be underestimated. On line purchases are great for getting discounts on shoes that you have already tried.

Good luck to your son! I did XC and so did my daughter. Loved it.

Running speciality store.

And while people have their favorites, what brand works for some does not work for others. (I cannot do New Balance though it is raved about.)

ETA: please keep in mind that you may spend more on the shoe, but you save money in mitigating injury. So don't fret if he requires a stability or motion control shoe which may limit options and increase costs.

Go to a running store and get fitted. However, if budget is an issue, then go to the outlets after the first pair. I worked at a specialty running store, and loved them. But the outlets are cheaper, and once you realize if you're a pronator, need a stability shoe, more cushioning etc, the outlets are cheaper.

thanks everyone! We went to the specialty store and got a wonderful pair of mizuno shoes! his arches collapse when he runs so I am glad we went to get the right ones!! ;)

New Balance online if you call them they will ask you questions to help you find the style right for you then you buy online. They will eve point out good ones in the sale section. Free returns

Nothing to add, but agree about going to a specialty store. My 15 year old runs cross country and I used to buy his shoes at kohls. When he got to high school his coach told us to go to a local running store. They give the local school kids 20% off. As a pp said, they watch you walk and then find the right shoe. My son is an over pronator. We also get his racing spikes at the same store. It's frustrating to the kids if they get sore legs or feet and can't run so having better quality shoes us worth the cost.

OP - glad to hear you went to the running store and he found some. Especially good news given his arch, this should help save him from pain that might discourage him from enjoying the sport.

Here's a hint to drying out wet shoes (which will happen - often :))
Take the insole out and loosen the laces over the tongue (or take the laces out entirely). Stuff the shoes with crumpled newspaper. They will be dry in the morning.

We bought out ASSports gift shop's inventory of newspapers one year when my son's XC team ran at WWOS. It POURED like 6 inches and they were all a mess. Newspapers saved the kids from being in wet shoes all weekend!

Glad to hear you went to a running store. That would have been my recommendation also! My DD ran cross when she was in middle and high school and has a "pronating" something or other.

Now - for shoe maintenance - my DD's high school coach always recommending stuffing the shoes with "crumbled up newspaper" if the shoes got wet. (I see that plutopony recommended this too!)

Good socks are a must too!

Running store is a good place to start.

Sometimes I go to the running store, find good running shoes and then I go back home and search for them online. Online you can get really good price.
