Runners UNITE! We've graduated C25K, so let's keep on going!

Bye, C. :sad1: Good luck!!! :cheer2:

(glad you're feeling better)

Hi friends!

I am back and it was a fantastic time. Kat and I met up on Friday night at the AC and had a good time, tough I left a little early - not as early as Austin, but still early.

It was a fantastic weekend and I will write the full update very, very soon. I am sorry to disappoint, but I only have one (ONE!!) photo from the race. I should have changed out the battery, darn it.

Hope things are going OK around here. Kim - I am going to check your journal next for your update. We thought of you during the race.

:sad1: You girls are so sweet.

WELCOME HOME!! Can't wait to hear all about it!

(and I guess I forgive you for only having one pic :confused3 )

Hi friends!

That's ok about the pic, but we want full details. :listen: I didn't get any pics from our Halloween run this weekend either. :sad2: We just couldn't manage a camera too. :confused3 It was 42 degrees when we checked in. For us Southerners that is :cold: ! :rotfl2:

We finished in 47:30. I think that is great considering dd has only been training for two weeks. I had a mishap this weekend after the race, so I am going to have to lay off my running this week. :confused3

I was picking up my son from his former hockey coach's house. (where he was having a Halloween party) Well the coach and his nephew got into a little tussle. (all in good fun;)) Well, they ended up falling on my foot and then knocked me down and fell on my leg. OUCH!!!:scared: Well, his coach is NOT a small man. He probably weighs about 250 -300 lbs. and the nephew probably weighed 150. So ALL that weight came down on my leg. I guess I should count my blessings that it isn't broken. :rotfl2:

I know y'all don't "know" me that well, but let me tell you accidents happen to me all the time. I say that it is a genetic defect. Mainly because the same thing happens to my mom. :rotfl: Anyway, my DH noticed a BLACK bruise on my derrière tonight. I remembered hitting the foot of their recliner when I fell. :scared1: Anyway, I figure I better take it easy because my knee just feels tender. I sure don't want to injure myself for January. :sad2:

Well, I will do my best to write an accurate and somewhat concise report for my C25KRU! friends. :-) I started and it ended up being a non-concise report. I'll post that too, but I'm going to need more time to work on it.

The short story is this: Kate and I met up at the Adventurer's Club on Friday night and had a fun time, though I left early due to travel fatigue.

The next day, race day, Austin and I did a lot of family guilt shopping at various resorts and Downtown Disney. It was fun, but not the restful day I had envisioned. Midway through the afternoon, he headed back out to Animal Kingdom Lodge to get something he had seen the previous night after Boma and decided that he actually DID want, and badly enough to trek back over to AKL. I went back to the room with the morning's purchases, and tried to relax, rest a little, ice my sore spots, stretch out my problem muscles and get the race stuff ready. It went pretty well. We decided to skip dinner, but went over to shop at the CBR store and I bought a Greek salad for later and Austin bought a cookie for later.

We returned to the room and changed and put on our wristbands (they glow in the dark!!) that were required for the race and party. We put the chips on our shoes. Austin walked me through the whole thing because I had never done it before. Finally, we were all ready to go. I had arranged a cab to pick us up at 8pm, and we arrived in the loop at the same time as the taxi did. Away we went.

But then we ran into a HUGE amount of traffic leaving the resort and turning onto Buena Vista. It was crazy how many cars there were. Then we realized it was all traffic for the race! I was already nervous and this was not helping. I was feeling sickish and cold and tense and shivvery. Finally we got out and headed for the main entrance of the park. Which wasn't the right place to go, as it turned out. We headed over towards the Stage parking lot and finally saw tents and things that at last looked like the start of a race.

I heard my name called out and hooray! It was Kate! I got to meet her sweet mom and adorable little Russ! We talked a few minutes and took a couple of pictures.
PA270090.jpg
That's it - the only one I have that turned out from the race. I know that Kate's mom took some more, though, and there are the professional photos yet to be posted online, so there is hope for more photos! I needed to check in my bag and also keep moving, so we moved along. The bag check went smoothly, and then I realized that the battery in my camera was low and maybe it would be smarter not to have brought it. But oh well. We wandered on to the start, and the huge line of port-a-potties.

They had a DJ and a huge screen and were playing stuff like Marilyn Manson and Rolling Stones and Ozzy Osborne. Lovely, right? Eventually, we decide we'd better call Kate, but as it is ringing, I spotted her! Austin wanted to move up towards the front, so off he went and Kate and I proceeded to wait for the race to start. I am leaving out the 4 individual potty stops I made - I wanted to be sure to be as empty as possible for the race.

We were very frustrated when they delayed the start of the race by another 20 minutes - that was 20 minutes of park time that we were going to just NOT get. And then we started to wonder where the benefit was to running the longer race. We paid more, worked harder, had less time in the park after AND got the same shirt and medal as we would have had we run the shorter distance. I guess what we got was a chip time and the wide world of sports. We also discussed running together versus going our separate ways. We decided to stay together as long as it seemed to make sense, but if we decided to split up later, there would be no hard feelings.

At last the race started. Within the first 500 yards, there was a man off to the side peeing in the woods. :rolleyes1 The first segment was on the highway and there was a little out and back and we even ran outside the WDW gates. I saw Austin when he doubled back, but he didn't see me cause I was unfortunately more in the middle. It was exciting when the 13 split off from the 6.5 course and we were committed to the full distance. The banking of the off-ramp was uncomfortable, but workable for a short distance. Before we knew it, we were running through the woods at the Wide World of Sports complex. There were eerie speakers playing eerie sounds. They had brought in lots of portable lighting for the event, so it wasn't TOO spooky. They had cast members dressed in white along the sides acting crazy and banging pots (someone said to scare the aligators away.)

We got to the track where we did most of a lap and I said, "It is too bad that Kim isn't here with us, but given the hip problems, it's kind of lucky she didn't plan to come." Things work out, but we still wished you were with us, Kim! Somewhere between mile 3 and 4, there was a huge water stop with a medical tent, too. We had passed on the first water stop (I don't know exactly why) but got some water here. And on we went. We wove around all these sports fields - what a huge place! We got passed by a stinky man and I was glad he was running a lot faster than us. I told Kate that I thought we could make it to 4 miles before our walk-break. We were back on the highway. When we passed that 4 mile marker, we kept going, but ended up taking a short walking break at 4.25 miles. After a while, I said "OK - we'll start running again at that police car up there" and she said "What police car. I don't see any police car up there!" We still started running again at the police car. :)

I don't remember exactly how many little walk-breaks we took. Maybe Kate does, but at some point I got runner's brain. I remember when we were on the other banked bit of road - an off ramp, I think, we heard "Na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye!" And I thought it was a speaker behind us, but it was another runner with her earphones out and her music turned way up. We sang along with it for a while, but of course, she passed us.

Eventually, we were running back over the same road we had run out on at the start and then we were approaching a back entrance of MGM! There was a water and powerade stop. I had water and Kate boldly had the powerade! There were fans inside MGM and they were cheering us on, which was nice. The run inside MGM was kind of long and loopy and I don't really remember how it went, but we saw Kate's mom on the way in and then looped around a lot and finally, at long last, we came up the street by Rock N roller Coaster and there was Austin! He waved at us and we ran right on past! Then we saw Kate's sister and her adorable son! Then the tough part - the back way into Fantasmic.

I had gone this way on the Fantasmic dinner package and knew what was coming. A long HILL. *******s! We ran up most of it, but the last, steep bump, I admit, we walked a minute. Whew. But then we were running downhill and then - THEN - we saw the finish line. We had run the whole way together and I said "Now it's time for a burst of speed!" And Kate said "I don't HAVE a burst of speed! But you go for it!" And maybe I shouldn't have, but I did. I crossed the finish line a whole entire 6 seconds ahead of her. I'm thinking she maybe DID have a burst of speed just a few seconds after I started mine. Either that or my burst of speed wasn't actually all that speedy.

They cut off our chips. Then I was surprised to be faced with a volunteer who had a medal for me. She put it right around my neck. We walked on and got some water and brownies and bananas. They had more powerade, but again I passed - I had seen too much sports drink puking at the marathon. We walked on and found Kate's sister and then we found Austin, and ended up splitting up at that point.

Austin and I went and collected our bags. I had thought to change, but there was a long line at the restroom, so we looked at the RnRC line - 30 minutes. Yikes. We decide to head to star tours, but I got lured in by the tower. Good thing. We only had an hour by the time I got unqueasy and was ready to ride something. It was the best Tower of Terror ride ever. I don't know if they had a special sequence programmed, but we aplauded at the end of the ride, it was so good. I bought a couple of race technical shirts in the shop. It took longer than it should have. Ultimately, I am glad that I have them, but I wish I hadn't had to spend so much time to get them.

Then we went and rode RnRC and it was fantastic as well. I offered Austin to ride again and he said SURE! - it is his favorite ride, and he was planning to ride 4 times. But it was sadly 1am and therefore closed. Bummer.

We headed for the exit, but before we left, I changed into my non-soaked-smelly clothes at long last. And Austin checked our results on the website. Pretty exciting!

I have to get the kids to bed, but I will post the final results in a little bit. :)

I love it (so far)! And I am DEEPLY touched that you guys thought of me in the midst of all of that.

I'll save the rest of my comments until you wrap it up, girl. :rolleyes1

OK - not such a little while. Things got away from me today, but here I am!

So the final results - Austin finished in 1:04:57, making him 162nd overall - very impressive! I followed with a chip time of 1:41:27, #1733 across the finish line. I hope I am not overstepping by reporting that Kate came in right after me at 1:41:33, #1736 across the finish line out of 2590! I think we did pretty well!

This was my first REAL race with a chip and times and everything, and even though I started out nervous and there were some organizational difficulties, I'm really proud of how well a couple of former couch potatoes came through in this run! I have one more photo for you:

bada BLING!!!:cool1:

You guys totally ROCKED that race!!! I'm SO proud of my fellow c25k-ers!! :woohoo:

Great Job!!! Thanks for the report and the pics. That is one cool medal. I wonder if we will get one in Jan. for the 5k. :confused3

Thanks, Kim and Allie! It was a good run and I am still kind of shocked that I was able to do it. Austin said it is the coolest medal he's ever gotten - that elevator has a spring mechanism and you can move it down and up.

I can't wait to see how the pictures Kate's mom took turned out. Well, maybe I can - I am not anticipating that I was looking my best during the race! :rotfl:

OH, and one other thing I forgot to mention. Almost everything we got from this race GLOWS. The numbers glow! The t-shirts glow! The wrist bands glow! The lettering on the medal actually glows too! The chip didn't glow, but they took that back. Someone had fun with the glowing swag, that is for sure.

Onward and upward - I need a new goal. I am going to run a local Jingle Bell 5K on December 15 and I think I am going to do REAL 5K training for 6 weeks. What do you guys think of that? I would LOVE to get to a sub 30 minute 5K. We're back to that old 3 miles/30 minutes thing in C25K. Not sure if it's possible given the timing and talent involved, but I'm going to give it a try and whatever I manage to do will be good.

One more thing for Allie - I would be so surprised if you didn't get a medal in January. They have one for the 5K associated with the Minnie Marathon - it's not a character medal, but it is a medal. Disney seems to DO medals really enthusiastically, so I bet you do get one. I just looked on the website and it does confirm that all finishers will receive a "special medal." You HAVE to post a picture when you get it, ok? It looks like a great course. I love Animal Kingdom. Wish I could run that one with you.....

I bet if you continue with "longer" runs once a week, and do tempo runs once a week or so, plus a 3-4 miler once a week...you'll definitely get your 5k time reduced. There's no doubt in my mind!

You are so inspiring, my friend. It just killing me that I can't get out there in this gorgeous, cool weather. :headache: PT again today, Friday and Saturday then probably not again until I get back from WDW. I'll definitely do my stretches though because I want this to be OVER!

Wow, there's not much I can add to Corinna's report. She summed it up very well - and y'all, if you ever get a chance, she is the best running partner ever! I never would have made it the first 4.25 miles, straight running, without her. And then I kept up out of fear of disappointing her. ;) I think we only took three walking breaks - the 4.25 one, one around 6 miles and a very short one at 7 miles to get prepped for that last mile.

It definitely was not very organized, but by the end, it was fun. Though it was the first race I thought I'd puke afterwards. I blame the humidity. ;) Afterward, we headed down to the bathrooms by the Playhouse Disney on Stage show (that isn't there anymore) and changed, then hit the Great Movie Ride, and then headed home because I really wasn't feeling well.

Russ LOVES the elevator on the medal. :rotfl: I told him on the GMR when he runs 8.22 miles, he can have his own darn medal. All the runners in our car laughed.

I don't have pics on my camera but I will be bugging my sister and mother for their pics right away!

Oh, and Corinna, I totally didn't see the guy peeing off to the side. :rolleyes1 Though you forgot to mention the lady (loudly) exclaiming about kicking her family out to have sex on her wedding night. Oh, and through MGM on NY Street we sang the Brady Bunch theme song. :rotfl:

You're right - those were fine, fine moments that I totally left out! The horror! I couldn't believe we had the wind to sing the brady bunch song at that point, but it was sure fun! And Kate - you did an amazing job! Talk about extreme mental toughness!

Thinking about walk-breaks, I think there was that one last little walk on the last bump of the Fantasmic hill. Brutal. Doesn't count as much of a walk break and HEY - we ran up 95% of it. That takes some doing. I didn't realize you felt sick afterwards, but I guess I was a little woozy myself, so it should not come as a shock. Did you feel better the next day? It was so super fun to have a friend to run with - 1/2 Marathon 2009!!! Austin is going to run the full that year - he has considered the Goofy, but I think he actually thought better of it. There is still time though, and maybe I will try to talk him into running the half with us slowpokes.

Kim, you sound like a coach! I am so sorry you can't be out there right now, but there is no doubt in MY mind that you will. Keep up the good work with the PT - they always say recovery is just as important as the run, right?

One question??? Did you see or hear of anybody getting "swept" to the finish line because they didn't keep up their time? That is what I am really afraid of.

When you say it was disorganized, what do you mean? I want to be ready for Jan. since one of my DIS friends just had to cancel out on the trip. :sad1: Now dd and I are on our own. We would love to have your Corinna. :rolleyes1

 thanks, girl:hug:

Kat - You totally kicked butt on that race!!! I am gonna try my darndest to get to the 1/2 in 2009 (anyone want to sponsor me? :confused3 ). The three of us could do some damage there, don'tcha think? :dance3:

Stacey - thanks for stopping by! You are always welcome here, even if you didn't provide a valuable piece of information and link! :goodvibes

Allie, I did not see any sweepers, but the time limit for this race was very generous (16 min/mile pace - it is frequently 15, which is a FAST walk, IMO) By the time the sweepers were pulling people, if they did, I think that I was probably in a fast limo ride to the Aerosmith concert..... The 5K in January is a 15m/m pace requirement, right? But if you run some and walk some, you WILL be able to stay ahead of those sweepers!

As for being disorganized, I heard everyone and her brother comparing this with marathon weekend which has a reputation of being awesomely run. I don't think you will have the confusion and multiple stations at packet pick-up, though that is me assuming you will pick up at the same place as the marathon people. Just plan to get there early both to the race and packet pick up, if possible, use the potties early and bring your own water if you are accustomed to sipping. You should be fine. We say it was disorganized, but really, it could have been worse. You are unlikely to have the traffic problems they ran into with their first "night" race.

You and your dd will be fine - It's going to be a FUN race for you. I WISH I could be there, but it seems to be all sold out and I'm not sure I could justify the extra travel to my family, even if it is a 5K through my FAVORITE Park. Maybe I will have to hit that one in 2009 before the half......

Hi Corinna and Kat...been following your training over here on the grad thread (I guess I'm officially a running junkie since I am drawn to anything running related LOL). Anyway...congratulations on running a great race :thumbsup2 ! You should both be so proud of your accomplishment. That's a VERY respectable distance, a super pace and the bling was awesome! One of THE coolest medals I've ever seen.

As for the disorganization factor...I'm sure marathon weekend will be slightly less chaotic. But unfortunately, and this is just my opinion, WDW doesn't throw a marathon together as well as other organizations. For instance, I've found the two elite run races (Rock and Roll Series) that I've done to be far better in terms of organization pre-race (ie packet pick up) and during (ie water stops). Disney ran out of water last year :(. That was hugely disappointing in the 80 some degrees. But with that said...if you are prepared for anything (should be the runner's motto) then you will be perfectly fine. I always carry my own water now! Not sure if you guys are doing the 5K, Half Marathon or Marathon. But all the packet pick-up locations are in the same area for marathon weekend. Lines can get long unfortunately. Edited to add: Didn't mean to slam the Disney marathon. It's a FUN race and there are so many positives as well. Hope it didn't come across wrong LOL. I just wish I had known more before heading into it last year :).

Hey there Coach Kim ....once you are all healed from that nasty case of Bursitis, which will hopefully be VERY soon...any chance you'd like to train for the NJ Half Marathon in May? I've got that race on my radar and it would be nearby for you :). It's perfectly flat *YAY* and would be a great warm-up for disney '09. Give it some thought. You'd need a solid 20 weeks of training. The mileage builds gradually for the half marathon in Bingham's plan. Here's the link  http://www.njmarathon.org/. My SIL said it was a GREAT race and run really really well.

Anyway....sorry to hijack your C25K thread. Rock on runners! And congratulations again to all of you!!! :goodvibes
