Runners UNITE! We've graduated C25K, so let's keep on going!

I'm glad it's just once a season. Hopefully you'll be through it quickly. Could it maybe be mold as things are thawing and the spring rains come in? My mom always had issues with mold - but that probably would last longer than just right around V day, I'd think. Hope you feel better quick!

It's so great your new shoes are working out for you. A botanical garden run sounds just gorgeous. Is that coming up soon or do you have a little more time to train for it? Exciting news about race miles counting double for the game, isn't it? I wonder if that is an ongoing thing or a limited time offer. You never know with that crazy Panda, I guess!

I'll be sure to do a "jacket" report.

Oh allie, a run around a botanical garden sounds bliss. I hardly ever stray from a treadmill unfortunately. it's so good to hear how much difference the right shoes make. I've been running in the comfiest shoes ever, but recently had issues with my right foot so am heading to a specialist running shop to see what they say. Can't wait, but slightly embarrassed about running on a treadmill in a shop!!!!

Corinna, that new double distance rule may just be the push i need to register for a 5mile at the end of march. I'm thinking i need to be able to run that distance outside by then to be able to so minnie. Can't wait for your jacket report :thumbsup2

Hey guys!! I'm slowly but surely getting closer to graduation #2. Tomorrow I'll finish up week 4 of the c25k. :thumbsup2

I've registered for a 5k with swim-mom (on the c25k thread) on March 30th. I'm also 99.9% sure I'm running the Minnie 5k in May. :woohoo:

You guys are all doing so great. I can't wait to be where you guys are again. :goodvibes

Kim! I saw that you and swim-mom were planning a race. I lurk, lurk, lurk on that thread, I'm afraid - when it moved to a new thread, I thought....hmm....maybe they're trying to ditch the chatty old graduate. But it seems like things are going good for you and your new "class." Almost through week 4 - whew! That's very cool.

So, 99.9% sure - that's better than most forms of birth control! Do you think you'll register soon, then?

It will be exciting when you re-graduate, but you know, I remember that week 4 was actually just as much work at the time as what I just did tonight - more maybe. It was a "Kim" - my current training plan calls for rather a lot of 2 milers.

I think I have picked out my next race, too. It's a St. Patrick's Day deal and there is a 5K an 8K and two FREE kids' races of .25 and .5 miles. My older DS says he wants to do the half mile and my younger DS is still talking about the kiddie run at the RFTC last May - he goes on and on about how he WON and how he was so, so fast. In reality, we were in that nice middle of the back of the pack of preschoolers, but nevermind.

I looked at the times from last year's races (for the grownups - the kids are untimed) and seriously, if I can pull this off in something like 30 minutes, I'd be in the top 3rd of the 5K. If I ran in the 8K, judging by how long it generally takes me to run 5 miles, I'd be among the last 10 runners to finish. Out of, like 950. Pretty funny, eh? I guess that's the difference between a run/walk and a run.

Corinna - thanks for your continued support. You're the best running buddy ever! I love that the 2 milers are still called "Kims". :goodvibes

Those kid races sound awesome! I don't know that my kids could do a 1 miler at this point (I've just never seen them do it), but I know they could definitely do .25 or .5. That would be so awesome to be there cheering THEM on! :thumbsup2 Good luck with whatever race you choose. You might want to stop over-analyzing your finish-standings and just run the distance you want to run! :rolleyes1 (said in the most loving way possible, of course:love: )

Week 4 is ok, but week 5 is gonna be a lot harder. It still bothers me that I had to start over, but I'm doing it and that's all that matters, right?

Have a great week, ladies!

Kim - don't worry, I just "started over" too. I just did day 1 week 3. I just remember it being a lot harder last time than it is this time. I ran with a neighbor today, and we would get to talking, and I would forget to look at the time, then I would realize that we should have started walking 30 seconds earlier. :rotfl: It was good to get out early though. I think it is supposed to rain here later today, and I needed the boost. What is this thread y'all are talking about? :confused3 Of course, I'm having trouble keeping up with all the threads I'm on now.

There is a 10K here on March 2nd. I would love to try it, and see how I do, but that is my son's 15th birthday, and I don't know if he would appreciate mom running a race on his birthday. Of course, I could partake in his cookie cake afterward, because I surely would have burned off enough calories to have a piece. :rolleyes1 :scratchin

Oh, and I got my Memory picture from the 5K yesterday. It is awesome! :thumbsup2 I listed the pictures in the order they were taken hoping that they would be posted that way (they said they couldn't guarantee where the pics would be located on the picture). Well, they did them in that order! :thumbsup2 The top one is of us holding hands, then underneath that is us running to the finish line, then beside that is us with our medals. Above the medals pic is both of our names, and our finish time. Now I just have to find a good frame for it.

Allie - here is the link to the c25k thread. It's kind of nice to hear how others are doing along the way through that plan, you know? :goodvibes

Well, week 4 is done!!! I ran at lunch today outside (Corinna, check out my journal for a little holla! :rolleyes1 ). I'm starting week 5 on Thursday - so let's pray for a little warmer temps out there. I'm happiest in the 40's I think.

Keep it up, ladies!!! :woohoo:

Aww, Kim! You're gonna make me cry now over here. Don't worry - you'll be ready for week 5. That's the way it always goes. You finish one week and say "Yeah, but next week will be harder" and you're actually ready for it, you know?

As for the distance, I see what you mean. ;) I am not actually worried about where I'll place all that much, I just thought it was interesting to see the contrast in the results of the two races. I'm doing the 5K, for sure - I gotta see where I am on my >30 mission! I'm excited about the kids' races as well. My 9 year old can definitely run that distance - I took him out in the fall at his insistence one time, and he ran 2 miles (a Kim), no problem - I had to keep telling him to slow down for the longer distance, though. I was pretty surprised and impressed. It will be fun to cheer the boys on, for sure!:cheer2:

Oh, and thanks for the little holla!

Allie - your photo sounds pefect! I'm so glad it turned out the way you were hoping it would.

Wow, March 2nd is coming up fast! A 10K won't take up the whole day, will it? Just part of the morning or is it later in the day? Unless it was going to interfere with birthday plans, I bet your son wouldn't mind if you ran it, do you?

And to answer for Kim, it is SO much fun to run with someone else, I agree! I don't get to do it often, but I had so much more fun at ToT with Kate (KATE!!!) than I would have on my own.

I think it's great that you guys are both getting your C25K "re-certification," and I think it really does happen to almost all runners that there are times of rest and times of re-training. And Kim, also said lovingly as possible  What counts is that you are doing SOMETHING. Something for your health and yourself. The fact that it is C25K again is super and no less valid because you've done it before. You have often told others that there is nothing wrong with repeating a workout or a week if you need to. I'm going to take it a step further and say that it is a GOOD thing to repeat a workout or a week or the whole entire thing when you need to!

:sad1: You're the best.

Kim congratulations on completing week 4 wahey!!!! You're storming though the weeks in fab style.

I finally went and had my 'gait' (running style) recorded and analysed and it didn't look as weird as i expected. They did say i need a more supportive shoe tho as my nimbus is too flexible, but oh so comfy  So i have asics 2130 which feel totally different and will be given a workout in the morning. Hopefully this will sort out foot issues.

Corinna your kids sound so cute! I can't imagine going for a kim (it's catching!) at 9 years old. Kudos to him. Hope everyone's having a happy and health weekend

I'm just so big time I can't stand myself. :snooty:

:rotfl:

Hey ladies. I'm officially done week 5. :headache: All I can say about today's run (w5d3) is OUCH!! :headache: No pain, but my legs were soooooo tired. Not sure why, but just wasn't a great one. I finished my 20 minute straight run and it's on the books. Thursday starts week 6. :thumbsup2

How are you guys doin?? :confused3

You really are big time, aren't you! We're all so proud we can say we virtually knew you when!

Way to get through that legendary w5d3 - that one is always tough one way or another, I think. Mentally, physically - it seems like one way or another, it is just tough, cause it's the first really long span, so take some credit, cause however you got through it, it's a VICTORY. Sometimes the runs just aren't so fun. Here's hoping week 6 goes easily for you - that's a kind of a drop back week, isn't it? Like you're back to some sort of intervals, right? Last year, I didn't really get that, but now it seems like there really is wisdom behind it, even if it seems a little anticlimactic.

smileyk8! How are your new shoesies treating you? I feel like I've only ever gotten a cursory "analysis" at the running store - no video tape. I suppose that might be a good idea. Do you feel like it's made a difference? Do you miss the cush of your cloud-like shoes?

My kids are kind of hilarious about the running. My 4 year old often watches TV and colors and has special snacks while I'm running my intervals on Wednesday on the TM - and sometimes he gets up in front of the TV where I can see him and jogs in place - he looks SO happy. Both of my boys literally BEG to use the treadmill sometimes. It's like a treat to them. My 9 year old gets to, and it's not fair, but I don't really think it's safe for a 4 year old. It amazes me and makes me proud, though, to think that their interest is at least partly because of what I have been doing this past year.

Allie - are you doing that March 2 race?

OH, and my Jacket Report. So like a bonehead, I ordered the wrong size. It's too small around the hips, so I'm going to get the larger size.
But the clearance sunglasses are.....the best ever. Seriously. I have tried on how many sunglasses and these clearance (though still $$) sunglasses from REI's clearance sale are the perfect thing? Just weird.

Allie - are you doing that March 2 race?

No, I've decided not to. After the advice I got from fellow WISHers, and my guide from church. I decided it was too much too soon. Although, my friend's husband (guy from church) has set me up with a plan to run the 10K in May. He said I should definitely be able to do that one. He said that this other one was too fast for my pace at this point in my training. I am just on W4D1 of C25K. Will do day2 tomorrow. I'm ok with it. Especially since I got my daughter's softball schedule tonight and she has 4 practices that week!

Sorry that the jacket didn't work out, but :thumbsup2 on the :cool2: !

Corinna i can't get over your little ones begging to get on the treadmill, it's so cute. They want to do what mum's doing i guess :cutie: Well we'll just have to wait for our jacket report then popcorn::

My shoes are the best things ever!!!! I popped them on my feet for my long run on sunday which was meant to be 7 miles. Picked a lovely treadmill away from the pool this time (running water does me no good when i'm trying to run :rotfl:) and caught myself thinkin 'i wonder if i could run for an hour and a half'. I DID IT!!!! 8.7 miles in 88 mins. Got home and my foot felt fine, sleepy but not hurty. Since the new shoes it has been brilliant.

Now the 2130s are no where near as cushiony and bouncy but still ample to be a comfortable ride. I would absolutely recommend getting a full gait analysis done- he said i was badly inverting my knee in the nimbus too which could have caused LT problems.

Kim- hope week 6 goes without any glitches, you can do it even if it does get boring think about your goal.

Allie, the one thing that makes me wary about races is knowing whether or not they are appropriate for new runners at my slowish pace. It's great that you have someone to advise you and go for the 10k, that sounds like great timing.

Just a note, not to scare you but warn you, I have a four year old in my Sunday school class who got 3rd degree burns from his mom's treadmill. It was a freak accident, and he is fine, but just make sure those little fingers stay away from the belt. He had to have a skin graft done, and has been wearing a cast that covers all of his fingers and goes all the way up his arm for about a week now. Just be careful, as I know you will.

Yes, it is great to have someone to guide me through this. Although, he did say he was gonna "check up" on me each Sunday, to keep me "honest". I'm sure there will be some fun loving teasing going on too. ;) Although, my knee and hip are starting to hurt a little bit again. I just have to keep stretching them, I believe.

Allie - there really is no substitute for a little local mentoring when it comes to races, I think. It's great you have someone to advise you. I don't know about this monitoring and keeping you honest - I'm sure he's just excited that you are running and wants to encourage you to keep going.

Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry to hear about your student's burn. That is just the kind of thing I always worry about, and as a result tend to keep my little one far from the treadmill - seriously, if he gets within a few feet, I get nervous and ward him off - you just never know with these things and it's impossible to be careful enough, so I appreciate your sharing that. Our other rules (for people over age 8) include ALWAYS wear the safety string, always wear shoes and always make sure someone knows you are on the treadmill. Oh, and the new one - don't max out the speed!:rotfl:

Keep on listening to your hip and knee - they will tell you if you are doing too much, I'm sure.

Kate - that was a super, duper LONG run! I can't believe you did that! Well, I can believe it, but still, WOW. You're ready for the Minnie right now!

It's a bummer about the jacket, but even if it fit, I wouldn't have used it the past few days - it's -11 out this morning. :scared1: Plus wind. So I wouldn't be able to test drive it anyhow right now.

Oh, and your pace doesn't sound slowish to me at all, but I know what you mean. I always look at available results to see if I'm in the time range covered the previous years. It seems like run/walks are good, and so are larger runs. Anyhow, as they say DLF>DNF>>DNS!

eek i think i've been a bit deluded about my running ability! Went outside for a run for the first time since early jan and really struggled. After 1 1/2 miles had to walk a min then after another 1 1/2 arrived home and felt dead. How can i run 8.7miles straight on the treadmill and only 1 1/2 on land!?!?!? I need to make treadmill work harder.

So.... off to the gym tomorrow and going to crank up the incline. Then will try to get more outside runs over next few weeks in hope that i'll be able to do 5miles by end of march :rotfl2:

Has anyone else found this massive difference?

How you guys doing this week?

Hi smileyk8! I have treadmill issues as well, but for me, the road always seems somewhat faster and less grueling than the TM, big hills aside. :) I guess I question the calibration of every treadmill out there. Do you feel like the speeds are equivalent? Could you up the speed on the TM? I think I'd do that before upping the elevation too, too much. It's possible to really send hamstrings into a tailspin when you start adding so much elevation suddenly, so when you do run hills or add elevation, be sure to stretch the hammies well afterwards - I had some trouble last year. ;)

Sorry my trouble doesn't match yours - I have read many people who claim the TM is easier - I have worried a lot because I found the exact opposite. Maybe today was just an off day. I'm sure if you're able to get out more, you'll get more conditioned to that. OH, the other thing is - how are you measuring distance outside? Do you have a garmin or are you mapping our runs ahead of time? Maybe you're running too fast outside, too? The treadmill keeps you at a nice, moderate pace, and people always talk about "going out too fast" in a race - I would guess it could be a risk when transitioning from treadmill to pavement as well? :confused3

Me? I had a pretty decent interval run today - on the treadmill. It kept getting shoved back and back and back. Finally, I had this little IM discussion with my DH

Corinna
4:04
wow, I feel all tired out.
I have both boys, but I really don't feel like doing the 4 miles I'm supposed to do.

Andrew
4:12
I can imagine.
But I'm sure you can do it!
And you'll probably feel better afterwards.

So later I thanked him for "kicking my butt out the door" even though he just typed a message and then I went and hopped on the treadmill. It was just the nudge I needed, though, and it turned out to be an OK run. Not fantastic and super fun (intervals rarely are, I am discovering) but ultimately, pretty good. I am trying to nudge the speed of the fast bits upwards, which you can imagine is not actually that much fun in itself. I did have a whole half mile at the fast pace today, though which I haven't done in a while. I have to confess, I vastly prefer running at what one of my teammates calls "my happy speed." As I was running those intervals today, I realized that I really do tend toward laziness. I actually started running because walking that fast was too uncomfortable and difficult. Talk about your misguided transfers! So I'd rather do a nice long, slow run than a FAST 2 miles or all these futzy, speedy intervals! The intervals are easier to take on the treadmill, though, cause at least something is changing periodically. I don't love the monotony of the treadmill.

In other news, Kung Fu tonight and I abstained from learning the rolls once again - I have a rib that is bugging me. It felt worse before the run and felt better after, but I wasn't going to take any chances and roll on it. It's always something.:rolleyes1

Incidentally, has anyone else seen that WDW commercial where the mom and daughter are riding BTMRR and the mom turns into a little girl?

I've found that outside and the treadmill both provide unique differences - I tend to run faster on pavement but tire out faster, whereas the treadmill is boring but keeps me at the same steady pace. I prefer running outside, but I don't go out in the winter. 31 degrees is not my friend. :snooty:

So... :rolleyes1 Anyone miss me? I've finally recovered from the winter's RSV, bronchitis, bruised tailbone from the ice... Two weeks ago I started running again, and today I finished the equivalent of the dreaded W5D3 - 20 minutes. (I wasn't really doing the C25K; just adding five minutes or so every session until I was back in action.) It wasn't that bad!! I could have kept running but I had to hit the grocery store. I'm doing a miles challenge thing with DH's squadron for Bloomsday - I've logged over 10 miles in the last week.

However... I am so annoyed with the kids at the gym. Tuesday, one of the bigger kids hit Russ in the face with a chair. Gave him a nasty cut and a black eye. And the mom told her kid, "We don't hit other kids." :sad2: That was the extent of the punishment!! So I got off my butt and finally got him enrolled in a preschool - he goes Tuesday/Thursdays, so I have two days I can run without having to keep an eye on the play area. (It's not supervised by the gym, obviously!) Today was my first time without him and it was NICE!!

Anyway, I'm looking for a training program for Bloomsday. It's a 12K, but the 10K training programs on Cool Running seem to be for serious runners. I'm not sure I can hit 25 miles a week, and running a 10K in 54 minutes just makes me laugh. I have 10.5 weeks to go.

Oh, and speaking of Bloomsday, can you believe DH finally got into a training program he's wanted for nearly a year, and they scheduled him to finish on the Wednesday beforehand? Bloomsday is Sunday and I told him I can't come drive back with him unless we drive straight home, from Oklahoma to Washington, in two days. :rolleyes1 We were planning on him taking some leave and going to CO Springs and Four Corners and Silverton and such, but now, who knows? I told him to fail a test and take an extra week...

Anyway, it's good to be back, and really good to be back running!

Kate, Kate, Kate! I was actually missing you just yesterday and was wondering if you'd be back or if you had moved on. I didn't want to pester, if you were still on "winter break." It sounds stalkerish, but I think of you every time a certain song plays on my iPod. :)

Yes, a 10K in 54 minutes would make me laugh as well. Like this: :lmao: I should stop cracking up and say "maybe someday." I'm still dreaming of a sub 30 5K. I'd be happy to share the program I've been using, but it's in a book, which means I can't just send a link. The annoying thing about it is that it is a 5 day plan and I can almost never manage to get 5 days. 4 if I am lucky, but two of the days are shorter runs, so I skip those when I have to. Let me know if you want it and I can send it to you - it's a 9 week program.

I'm so sorry Russ got the wrong end of a chair in the "child care" - it sounds like a bit of a challenging situation and I'm so glad you got him into a preschool so you have some time for yourself and worry-free running.

Congratulations to your DH! That timing is rather unfortunate, though. I don't know that 2 days in the car is the best way to do a taper....

It's so nice to hear from you again!:flower3:
