my story takes me back to mk closing. imagine if you can thousands of people leaving at once. i know its hard to imagine. so here i am walking with my family to get to the busses when all of a sudden the most frightening sound ever heard, the electronic beep of the ecv. at that point i tried to move but was cut down from behind. i had felt like i was at a who concert in cinncinati. lucky for me i was more embarrassed at being knocked down so i jumped right up. i look at the person who hit me and all she says is "you should have gotten out of the way." so i just did what any normal person would do in those circumstances, i jumped right onto the handle bars and started screaming bloody murder, almost as if i broke a leg or something. finally the lady apologized only after putting out her cigarette, then saying "now will you please get off"

I wasn't going to post in this, but you can NOT tell by looking at someone who is physically fine. Never judge someone on looks alone. If you had seen my friend you would have wondered why a young, pretty, fit-looking blonde was using wheelchairs, handicap accesses, etc. but you wouldn't be able to see her insides and her bad heart. She didn't live to get that heart transplant, but she did live to go to WDW.

This thread is getting way out of hand IMO. Toes are getting smashed and feelings are getting hurt.

They always do when someone starts an "ECV ran over me" thread. That's why I said earlier for a first post this guy sure picked a hornet's nest to post about. It always gets nasty. Sad in what is normally a very friendly group.

What I want to know is why do the scooters have to be so big? Why are they not more like electic wheelchairs? It's that "Ford Fairlane" front on these things that are so ridiculous. Why do they have shopping baskets on the front? You aren't in the grocery store. And yes, I know you can do a lot of shopping at Disney, but walkers aren't giving shopping carts for all their potential purchases. I'm not denying anyone necessary transportation but why are they renting out station wagons instead of motorized chairs?

cost, a power chair can cost up to 3/4 times more than an ecv/scooter

If you don't need an ECV, wheelchair, stroller, etc but are using one you are way wrong. I certainly can tell by looking at you there is nothing physically preventing you from walking around the parks and I most certainly can tell your child is too old or too big to be riding in a stroller. So, get off your lazy butt and walk with the rest of us..

I was in a restroom in AK in March when I had my foot run over by a scooter that lurched forward obviously faster than the driver intended (at least I don't THINK it was intentional). What upset me more than anything was that the driver didn't even apologize. She just paused for me to get out of the way and kept going. I was really afraid that she had broken my foot.

If you do get run over or backed over by a scooter. And I don't mean because your an *** and cut someone off by jumping in their path. What repercussions are there?

I am bringing three family members with degenerative bone disorder. They are walkers. If my family member is not able to jump out of the way of a backing up scooter, what insurances do I have that my husband now broken foot, or worse, will be paid by the driver?

I would never start yelling at anyone but how would I be able to get their identification?

Please do not think that I am saying that ALL EVC drivers are bad at it. I think that there is and equal amount of oblivious EVCer as walkers. Just check out the mall at X-mas. But someone walking is not going to bump into you with 1000+lbs on their side.

The thing which would help is if the speed of the ECV was limited to an average walk speed, it seems that a number of the riders think that just because it has a faster top speed than a walk they can/have to go that fast. Just because you are in a scooter does not mean you have a right to go faster than the prevailing speed of the crowd.

I'm one of the millions of uninsured Americans and just don't have the money for a Dr unless it's an emergency. If the driver wouldn't give me the information needed to take care of the bills, I would just call 911 and have my DH follow them around until the cops showed up to sort it out.

I think what this whole thread boils down to is that nearly everyone at Disney has a problem with paying attention when navigating a crowd, whether walking, riding, or even being pushed in a wheelchair or stroller. There is so much to see and so much to do, that no one pays any attention to where they are going. They stop in the middle of walkways, dart across in front of people, or even step back right into your path. I can't tell you how many times I've been run into while walking by someone stepping back trying to get the perfect picture, even knocked down once (You know the ones - they stand there forever looking through the camera and just as you walk by, boom, here they come!). Regardless of your method of getting around the parks, take a deep breath, slow down, and pay attention to what's going on around you. A little attention and consideration by all will reduce these incidents a lot.

If you do get injured by another guest, via scooter, stroller, handbag, whatever, and it's a serious injury, your best recourse would be to get security involved, and ultimately (if needed) the local law enforcement (typically Orange County Sheriff, but could be Osceola or even FHP), especially if it involves an outside scooter rental/owner as indicated in the OP's post. As proven by what happened at the Tea Party, injuries can be caused by guests using many different methods, and should the need arise, you want to have your ducks in a row. Obviously, if the injury is incurred by something/someone under Disney's control, that's a whole different ballgame.

Use a non powered wheelchair or at the VERY least Disney should make people prove they have a very basic control of the EVCs before entering the parks. Just before you let them in give them a handout telling them they are to pay for any injuries to other persons or property.

It is very unfortunate that accidents do happen.
If an EVC user does injure another guest then insurance information should be exchanged.

I just want to clear up a misconception.
Most EVC's really are not 1000+ pounds. (Although I am sure if your foot is run over by one it might feel that heavy.)

Follow them around heck! Just take the key to the dang thing and make them sit there immobile until security arrives. Better yet, take the key and toss it across the parking lot, street, or into the numerous moats or fountains and just walk away and leave them stranded.

For the first bolded part, I would mostly agree, but what about if you sprained your ankle or something mid-trip. The scooter could come in handy for you, especially if it was just you and a child.

For the driver ID idea, I like it. I like it a lot. But what would be the penalty?

Just an FYI

Disney cannot ask for a DR's note.

The reason they can't require proof is the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), which does say the person with a disability can't be required to provide proof that they have a disability in order to get accommodation for needs related to their disability.
