Rumor has it that Susan Atkins is dying

This is probably going to not sit well with some here, but I'm going to say how I feel about this. If she along with the other Manson murders would have been put to death in 1970, as the court originally handed down the sentence, we wouldn't be discussing this.

Everyone of them should have been marched out of that courthouse on their judgement day and had an appointment with gas chamber. Those murders were beyond horrific and to think they have had the opportunity/chance that they didn't give their victims, doesn't sit well with me. Life in prison isn't a fairy tale, but at least those murderers got to have a life. That's something Sharron Tate, her unborn baby, and the other victims, didn't get a chance to experience.

I can be a very compassionate person, but people who stab a pregnant mother and her newborn baby to death while the victim is pleading for her life, don't get any sympathy from me. They're damn lucky I wasn't able to be in charge of them on that day. I would have made sure they got the same treatment Saddam Hussein did and that was at the end of a noose.

You obviously didn't read much of the thread. Most of us concur with you 100%. Some of us don't even have the compassion you do. Personally, I think they should withhold the meds to cut the cost down a bit.

I am glad they didn't let her out. She needs to die in prison.

Sharon Tate's family can RIP knowing this murderer will stay where she is until she expires.

She still has the death sentence after all.....but the timeline has stretched.

I did only read a few pages, but mainly was thinking of how hot of a debate the death penalty has been here on these boards. I hadn't seen this thread in quite a while and thought I might say how feel before it disappears.

Unfortunately the America tax payer had to pay up the wazoo for her and the other Manson family for almost 40 years. It costs even more for prisoners who are on death row or kept out of the general prison population. Millions have been spent on their incarcerations, especially "Old Charlie" himself.

That fact that Charles Manson is still alive and spouting his craziness, chafes me like a pair of cheap underwear.

I am not opposed to the Death Penalty at all, but I don't celebrate it either.....just seems a grim necessity for the worst of the worst.

These people qualified for it & were only spared by our collective stupidity.

Such is life....

She remains a prisoner, but she is getting top of the line health care - to the tune of $1.4 MILLION since March!

Is High-Profile Convicted Killer Getting Better Cancer Treatments?
Manson Follower Susan Atkins Has $1.4 Million Hospital Tab Since March
By JOSEPH BROWNSTEIN

July 23, 2008
While many Americans with brain cancer may be largely left to fend for themselves financially in the face of million-dollar treatments, the $1.4 million in medical costs that convicted murderer and former Manson follower Susan Atkins has incurred since March is a cost entirely covered by the state of California.

Convicted murderer and former Manson family member Susan Atkins is receiving medical care for her brain tumor and other health problems -- care that has cost California taxpayers $1.4 million since March.
It's a situation that may leave many wondering what kind of medical care prisoners should receive and whether taxpayers should be stuck with the bill.

Last week, the California Board of Parole denied a request for a court hearing for Atkins' release from prison. Atkins, who has a brain tumor, is paralyzed on the right side of her body and has had a leg amputated.

The debate over her release has spurred the question: Does arguably the nation's second most famous brain cancer sufferer -- behind Sen. Edward Kennedy -- also receive the second-best care in the nation?

"I dare say that apart from the president and the members of Congress, the people with the best health care in this country are inmates," said Dr. Joshua Atiba, the medical director and CEO of Newport Oncology and Healthcare, which delivers cancer treatment to inmates in prisons in California.
Atkins gained notoriety for her involvement in the murders of actress Sharon Tate and hairdresser Jay Sebring as a member of the Manson family -- a group led by Charles Manson, who is serving a life sentence for the murders. Atkins has spent the last 37 years in prison.

Messages left on the cell phone and in the office of Atkins' attorney, Eric Lampel, were not returned.

According to Terry Thornton, a public information officer for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Atkins has been hospitalized in an unnamed facility since March 18, when she was moved from the California Institution for Women in Corona, Calif. She is in serious condition and her prognosis is poor, but her vital signs are stable.

The practice of moving an inmate from a prison to an outside hospital is common practice when care cannot be provided inside the prison, Thornton said.

Atiba said that in this case it was likely done both because Atkins cannot move to take care of herself and to avoid mistreatment at the hands of other prisoners.

"Other inmates would beat her up," he said. "She requires around-the-clock care."

But he noted that the move to the hospital has undoubtedly increased the cost.

At the hearing last week, it was revealed that Atkins' health costs have reached $1.4 million since March, a cost that is paid for by the state.

Atiba said that much of the cost can be attributed to the $10,000 daily cost of a bed in the intensive care unit, along with the money needed for guards. According to Thornton, two guards are with Atkins at all time to prevent family members from helping her escape and to keep her from being harmed by members of the public.

Atiba said that he has never been personally criticized for his work in prisons because by treating inmates in prisons he is able to cuts costs by up to 80 percent.

While all of Atkins' health-care costs are paid for by the state, she cannot receive any experimental treatments while in custody, says Atiba. As a prisoner, she cannot give consent.

"They have no autonomy," he said.

Brain cancer patients in the general public, on the other hand, may have the option to receive such experimental treatments.

High Costs for the General Public
According to the UCLA Hospital System, the total medical bill for a person in the general population who had a diagnosis of brain cancer would be $2.2 million over the same time period.

While a patient without insurance would enjoy a 30 percent discount and consideration for outside financial assistance, noted Roxanne Moster, director of UCLA Health Sciences Media Relations, patients are still faced with a hefty charge.

Better Care Behind Bars?
Not everyone agrees with Atiba that apart from the president and Congress, the best care is found behind bars.

While acknowledging that some inmates may receive excellent oncology care, the notion that inmates receive better health care is disputed by Arthur Caplan, the chair of the department of medical ethics at the University of Pennsylvania.

"We don't have an easy way to get good quality care into any prison," he said. "You can get care, and sometimes it's not bad.

"They're fine if you have a broken leg; they may not be so good if you have psychiatric problems."

Caplan also noted that while many speculate that some people will commit crimes to get better health care, he hasn't seen any evidence that this is the case.

"People are interested in health care, but they're not interested in getting it as a prisoner," he said.

Unlike Dickensian scenarios, he added, "We won't see people committing felonies so they can get into the poorhouse so they can eat."

And even in California, the health care in prisons hasn't always been that good. In 2006, a number of inmate lawsuits over poor health care led the federal government to take control of the health care in the state's prisons.

Still, Caplan said that people are likely to be calling for limits on what kind of health care prisoners can receive in the near future.

"It's going to become a political issue," he said.

Caplan predicts the problems we now confront about prisoners may eventually become discussed more widely as health care costs rise.

"We have a hard time saying no, even with prisoners," he said, noting that the questions applied to them will become more widespread with time.

"Why are we doing things that are basically hopeless when they cost a lot of money? We don't spend much on prevention, but boy, do we spend money to rescue people."

I know.

What a world.

Maybe we SHOULD then set her free. Not because of compassion, or because "she's paid her debt to society", or even because she's now "harmless". But just for the economics.

Let her family pay for her medical treatment, at the rate of $10,000 a day.

Let her family pay for her medical treatment, at the rate of $10,000 a day.

Unfortunately, since she is an adult and not anyone's "dependent" and also because she would be unemployed and unemployable, the taxpayers would still be paying for her medical treatment--not the costs associated with the incarceration but the medical costs--yeah--still on the hook for them. Plus she would qualify for tons of other taxpayer bennies (food stamps, subsidized housing, etc--unless there is some rule that if you have been relased from prison you don't qualify for benefits.

So leave her in jail. I would be willing to send a check to CA to cover a portion of the incarceration expenses a lot more willingly than I would be to know my tax dollars are supporting her and paying for her treatment.

Isn't she married? Wouldn't she be covered by her husband's policy?

I say, if he wants her out, he should pay for her.

OOOO yeah I forgot she got married while she was in prison. But I would want to make darned tootin sure she couldn't receive one penny of assistance of any kind and I still think she should stay incarcerated. Or if he has a single policy then she isn't covered and they probably won't let him add her due to a "pre-existing condition".

I am 47 and vividly remember when Sharon was murdered. Even as an 8 year old living in So Cal I was freaked out. The pain and suffering this monster put Sharon and the others through is inexcusable. I also watched and followed Doris Tate's pain through the years as she tried to keep these morons in jail and the public aware of what was happening with our crappy judicial system. It is now October so I hope Susan has had lots of time to ponder what her actions have wreaked on others. I feel no sympathy for her. Her death is easy compared to Sharon Tate's. May she rot in hell. She has never showed any remorse, only bad acting at parole hearings. Tex Watson also deserves a slow death from rectal cancer and so does Charles Manson. Look at OJ, karma sometimes takes a while but it does catch up eventually.

yes...she has brain tumor...and i'm surprising that she still alive...
no comments...
but she deserved it...

And so, Susan Atkins gets to beg for mercy. She's dying, her leg is amputated. Oh, please, please pity her. I didn't pity her. But, I did try to understand. And, here's why: Through some twist of fate, my aunt narrowly escaped being one of Manson's victims.
On August 8th, 1969, while Susan Atkins was stabbing the very pregnant Sharon Tate, the La Biancas were on the last night of their vacation. Their house was being watched by their son. He threw a party. My aunt attended that party. The next day, the *****ncas returned home. That night, the Manson clan murdered them.
I've been following this case since the seventies. I've even read Susan Atkins's self-serving book. I've tried to show compassion to Susan Atkins, and Catherine Share because of their strange backrounds, but I can't. Everything with Susan Atkins, and the rest of these people is about their comfort, their suppossed value, and their so-called rights. And nothing, not even Vincent Bugliosi getting behind Catherine Share, changes that. I can only describe it as a perversion of every natural law.
In 1971, Susan and all these other freaks had the death penalty. in 1972, the death penalty was repealed. So, these animals were given life with the poosibility of parole. A special jail had to be made for Susan, and the other two Female Murderers because there was no jail for females on death row at that time. Ever since then, our tax dollars have gone to keep these people entertained. Susan, and the other Manson prisoners all have college degrees from study-in-prison programs. I am injured, can no longer do what I used to, and can't get the loan I need for school. Susan Atkins actually has a website that has a section listing her accomplishments. HER ACCOMPLISHMENTS! I'll give you all a minute to take that in.
I do not wish her a nasty death because it won't help. Her soul is damned, and we don't get another Sharon Tate. But, I am violently opposed to the media treating this clan like a bunch of rock stars with a career, and a point-of-view. I'm angry at California for investing more in the Mansons than me, or anyone else. I don't care about what kind of musician that Manson. or Gypsy was. But, what I do want to see discussed is Sharon Tate's Career, and Contributions. Ditto Jay Sebrings. This man inovated men's haircare as we know it. They were busy, with the other Manson victims, living real lives when these losers slaughtered them. All becuase Manson said. It would be babyish and absurd if it weren't for the bodies!
We don't need to slaughter them. But, they do need to stay in jail. And without anymore $#@%&*@ websites, and publicity!

She needs to stay in jail. Where was her mercy when Sharon begged to keep her alive long enough to deliver her baby and then be murdered? I was not alive when this happened but what happened to that woman and her unborn child (not to mention the others there) was one of the most inhumane things I've ever heard of. I'm a very empathetic person, but letting her go would be inexcusable.
