I heard about this a week or so ago but haven't been able to find any confirmation of it on-line. Does anyone have any info about this?

I think it could be plausible in the summer months, but in the winter months I don't think many people would go for that. However, I probably am wrong! Sorry that I couldn't really add much to the thread, just wanted to give my opinion!

I think a few other cruise lines have been adding itineraries for certain times of the years from the northeast. Maybe Disney is joining them?

Disney Cruise Line (DCL) has announced their schedules through the end of 2010. There are no sailings from New York.

DCL has not announced specific sailings for 2010 and beyond, nor has DCL announced specific itineraries for the two new ships that are on order.

The new ships will go to Port Canaveral. See http://www.portcanaveral.org/general/news/releases/031908.php for news about Disney ay Port Canaveral.

Disney has not announced future plans for the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder. Conventional wisdom says they will go to other ports, most likely with one going to the West Coast and one going to Europe. The thinking is that the temporary West Coast and European schedules of the Disney Magic are dress rehearsals, proof-of-concept exercises, and publicity/awareness initiatives to pave the way for the future.

What about New York?

Yes, it's a possibility that some New York departures could be scheduled some time in the future. After all, there's a huge population to draw from. It would be a good way to introduce new passengers to DCL.

But DCL hasn't announced anything about New York.

The challenge would be to come up with a compelling itinerary. The cruise would have to call on at least one foreign port to comply with U.S. law. Cruise ships aren't that fast, so it's not a simple matter of sailing to the Caribbean and back on 7-night cruise. Canada is a possibility.

At this point, anything regarding DCL in New York is just speculation and wishful thinking (by New Yorkers).

Thanks for your comments, JHeigl, Cop Luv, and Horace!

Horace, I did a little more nosing around and found http://www.prnewswire.com, which listed the 2010 Disney Magic itineraries, including Northern European capitols and the Mediterranean. These are 10- and 11-night cruises and sound amazing.

Having sailed out of NYC on Holland America (and being a 15 minute taxi ride to the cruise terminal), I'd love it! It's actually not to difficult to comply with the Jones Act (foreign port requirement for all cruise ships that aren't US flagged, which is essentially all but two NCL ships that sail in Hawaii) from NYC -- in addition to Canada and Bermuda, can do Bahamas too on a short cruise. NCL does 6-day cruises from NYC -- I think they sail down to Port Canaveral, Miami, Nassau and their private Bahamas island, something Disney could easily replicate. 10-11 day cruises are a great option --2 days sailing each way and then 6 ports anywhere in the Caribbean (we went all the way to Barbados). Some lines do year-round sailing from NYC now since it's only about a day sailing to warm enough weather, although we thought that HAL Noordam was terrific for the port because it had a retractable roof that let us swim in March from the moment we boarded.

So I don't have any info about the rumor, but am ready to sign up if it comes true.

Disney has 2 new large ships on order which will be homeported at Port Canaveral/Orlando. That will free-up the two existing ships for new home ports. There is no reason NYC couldn't be one of them. A number of cruise lines sail from New York on summer cruises to eastern Canada. NCL does offer year-round sailing from NYC to Florida and the Bahamas and wouldn't that be a great way to tie the ship back to Disney World by making it a port-of-call during the journey! It's almost certain one existing ship will end up on the west coast.

There is only ONE problem with a cruise leaving from NY: It would probably have to RETURN to NY....<shudder>

Jar and KINGBOB, thanks for your input. I think it would be a HUGE success. Originally I heard it on CNN or MSNBC, so maybe it's in the works.

Geu, at least it's not going to Jersey. ;)

I wonder what you really heard on CNN or MSNBC.

Keep in mind that Disney has announced nothing, and that Disney doesn't comment on rumors.

A Google News search turns up some articles that use the terms "Disney Cruise Line" and "New York" in the same news article, but absolutely no news articles that tie the two together. Keep in mind that Google News includes the online articles posted by both CNN and MSNBC, as well as many thousands of other news sources.

As I wrote earlier in this thread, there's a possibility.

I really don't think that there's genuine news that "maybe it's in the works."

Horace, what I saw was a tease for a segment that I was not able to stick around for. The tease stated words to the effect that Disney cruises may start departing from NY. That is why I came here to the "Rumors" board, rather than the "Cruise" board, to ask about it in the hopes that someone else caught it. I had already done a couple of Google searches (disney cruise new york, disney cruise new york depart) with no luck. I never questioned the validity of Google, especially due to the fact that I am typing this from my fabulous G1 Google phone. If I misheard something, so be it, but I had to ask here after doing my own research and coming up empty.

By the way, I was also thrilled that DCL ships earned the 1st and 4th place honors for the best large ships in the recent Conde Nast Traveler. Go Disney!

Please don't take any of my comments as attacks. I'm glad you came to the "Disney News and Rumors" forum with this rumor. All I'm trying to do is to discuss the rumor, in light of Disney's lack of any announcements about new itineraries after the end of 2010.

A rumor about a future Disney Cruise itinerary doesn't sound like the kind of teaser CNN or MSNBC would run on their national news and commentary channels. It's even unlikely they would cover actual, announced news about cruise line itineraries.

Given that you're not sure of the station, could the teaser have been a local news channel, with a story about a local port trying to entice Disney to sail from New York? (Even then, such a story should also be online.)

Nope, it wasn't local news. I was scrolling around the mid-20s on my cable system (Cablevision) so it could've been MSNBC, CNBC, CNN, or FNC. They showed a picture of a DCL ship. It was probably early Saturday afternoon EST. I know I wasn't hallucinating (though 20 yrs ago I probably couldn't say that). I think your notion about the Port Authority trying to woo Disney makes a lot of sense. I'm going to keep Googling and see if it shows up somewhere eventually. Thanks for your help and if you find something down the road about it, I hope you'll post it!

Geu, at least it's not going to Jersey.

Royal Caribbean cruises out of New York actually originate at their so called Cape Liberty Cruise Port which is in Hoboken, New Jersey. So it's not far fetched that other cruise lines could sail and return from that side of the river. Of course the NYC side of the river is more likely.

As I sit here watching "The Sopranos" on A&E, may I reiterate how much I love Jersey and all the people in it?

However, with all due respect to Frank Sinatra, I'd like to quote Bugs Bunny: "Hoboken? Ooh, I'm DYIN'!"

Honestly, if there ever is a Disney cruise from the NY area, we'll be on it.

So glad it's not a rumor anymore!

Just saw it on our local travel agent's sign out front that SCL will sail out of NYC in 2012. I haven't had a chance to call for details yet but I sooooo want to go on it. A lot of ships that sail out of NYC and Port Liberty go to Bermuda. I would love to make it to Castaway Quay, but from NYC that would be a long cruise.

I must preface by saying I fell in love with cruising when I was a travel professional a few lifetimes ago......we cruise a great deal - married onboard the Radiance of the Seas in Juneau 3 1/2 years ago.

Royal Caribbean/Celebrity have ships sailing from Bayonne year-round. We will be sailing on the Explorer of the Seas for 12 days in December (SLAMMED the price of our 8-day castmember trip to WDW last december....and we had free airfare, free car rental, free park passes, 40% savings on our food budget by eating off property).....12 nights - suite.....caribbean....very tidy $$$ savings....life is way good.

Surprisingly, RCI's ships sailing from Bayonne are generally sold out.....no last minute deals here....even in the winter!

I have to be honest. I have sailed from both NYC and now Bayonne and NYC is simply a pain incomparison.

In Bayonne you can almost spit from Newark airport or Amtrak and you are at the ship. There are many hotels in the area offering a stay/park/cruise deal to avoid parking....and free shuttle to the ship. If you choose to park, Bayonne has plenty of parking.

NYC is fun.....but to embark, no thanks......logistics suck. (excuse the language!)

We will be heading up ahead of time for a couple of days in NYC to get into the Christmas Spirit - Rockettes.....then over to NJ and 12 day of cruising!

Ahhhhhh, 5,952 hours (LOVE those countdown aps)

ok, ok.....it will always be.....Bayonne....but it IS convenient!
