rough price for a tank of petrol

Thats right it will be full when you collect it, then if you return it full they will not charge you anything.

Or if you return it empty (or at least not full) then they will charge you an extortionate rate for the amount of fuel required to refill the tank.... :(

So (as I posted earlier on this thread), you need to either:
- pre-pay the fuel before you take the car when you pick it up, or
- refill the tank immediately before you return (drop-off the car), or
- pay through the nose for them to refill it for you.

Hope that is a little clearer :)

Petrol prices in the US are currently at a "record $3.196/gallon", according to today's Sentinel:

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/busi...s,0,4883136.story?coll=orl-business-headlines

But I remember them topping $3.20 in summer 05, so I'm slightly surprised at the use of the term 'record.' However, anything over $3 comes as a shock to the US, where most still think $2/gall is a lot. It is certainly a lot of money when it comes to filling the tank of an SUV, and the self-fill return option is definitely the way to go (stop at the Hess or Wal-Mart petrol stations on the lower 535 en route to the airport and you will get the best price, plus not use enough petrol for the gauge to drop from 'Full').

As several people have mentioned, most of the petrol stations in the LBV area are absolutely extortionate - up to $.50/gall more expensive than elsewhere - as they can catch a LOT of unsuspecting tourists. We drive by these almost every day, hence our view of petrol prices is a little jaundiced. Even the I-Drive stations are cheaper than this. Just look for Hess or RaceTrac (or Wal-Mart, with the handful of Wal-Marts that also have a petrol station), and you can usually be sure you are getting the best price locally. The SOBT has several well-priced stations, and there is also CostCo (usually several cents below the next cheapest nearby) for anyone with a CostCo card.

PS: We are up in Michigan this week: filled up at CostCo yesterday at $3.28/gallon; other stations nearby are already at $3.45. And that is BEFORE the big summer rush starts, when petrol prices ALWAYS go up. Some are predicting $4/gall, which would be mildly disastrous for the drive-up market to Florida. They suffered in summer 05 at $3/gall

Sadly, this will be just another waste of breath (and tax-payers' money). The big oil companies are totally a law unto themselves, and no-one (least of all a president elected on the back of the big oil ticket) is going to do anything about it.

The only thing we can do to try to make a difference is simple - use less petrol; make fewer journies; use public transport more; and ensure fuel consumption goes down. Very easy to say, I know, but it can be done.

(PS: Cheapest local petrol we noticed at $3.05/gallon today, but Dollar offering the 'full tank' option up front at $2.88. Quite worthwhile)

The problem is world wide, the attack on the oil producing units in one of the african states has effected the availability of oil stocks, OPEC cannot replace the demand lost through these pumping stations being out of action.
In the UK we are looking at £1 ($2) a liter again

Public transport. I have heard of this mythical character, never seen it though..:rotfl:
